The Covered Bridges of Madison County Originally boasting 19 covered bridges, five remain today, all listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The bridges were covered by order of the County Board of Supervisors to help preserve the large flooring timbers, which were more expensive to replace than the lumber used to cover the bridge sides and roof. Usually, the bridges were named for the resident who lived closest. Roseman Covered Bridge Built in 1883 by Benton Jones, it is 107 feet in length and sits in its original location. Roseman was renovated in 1992 at a cost of $152,515. In Robert James Waller's novel The Bridges of Madison County and the movie of the same name, Roseman is the bridge Robert Kincaid seeks when he stops at Francesca Johnson's for directions; it is also where Francesca leaves her note inviting him to dinner. Holliwell Covered Bridge
Built in 1880 by Benton Jones, it is the longest covered bridge, measuring 122 feet. It remains in its original site over the Middle River southeast of Winterset. Holliwell was renovated in 1995 at a cost of $225,000. It is featured in The Bridges of Madison County movie
Cedar Covered Bridge, 1883 and 2004

Musical Notes Whether able to grant wishes to travelers who lift their feet as they cross, or serving as a quiet spot for a young man to steal a kiss from his lady, these "kissing bridges" remain a wonderful link to earlier, and simpler, times. Come Celebrate our History One hundred years ago, covered bridges were major links in New Brunswick's road system. Sixteen covered bridges in Kings County slow your pace as they take you through the local countryside. With imagination, you can almost hear the wagon wheels rattling over the floor boards, which in winter, were covered with snow to ease travel by sleigh. Many people think of covered bridges as quaint relics of the past. Others become expert in describing the manner in which they were built. But, in either case, they represent the inventiveness and know-how of our forefathers and it seems fitting that they should be saluted for their engineering as well as their charm. Bridge Trivia Many bridges have two names: the practical government name and one that locals go by. The Kennebecasis River No. 9 is also known as the Plumweseep, an old Indian name that remembers the Micmacs and Maliseets who used the waterways and made the portages that later became today's roads and highways.

Maine Covered Bridges
History
In 1959 the 99th Maine legislature took a major step by enacting a law to preserve Maine's wooden covered bridges. The new law provided that state money could be used to save and renovate covered bridges. As a result, in 1961 the Department of Transportation undertook major renovations to the 10 remaining covered bridges. Once there were a hundred and twenty covered bridges in the state of Maine, but fire, flood, ice, progress and the Great Freshet of 1896 have removed all but eight original bridges. Two (2) other covered bridges, recently lost to fire and flood, have been reconstructed and are considered to have historical importance. On March 26, 1983 the Morse Bridge in Bangor was destroyed by fire; there are no plans to rebuild it. The remaining covered bridges are scattered through out the state.
The roof and siding of a covered bridge are the features that give the structure its familiar outlines. Some are thought to be more picturesque than others -

Ohio's Vanishing Covered Bridges
By Rickie Longfellow The history of covered bridges can be traced as far back as 780 B.C. in ancient Babylon. In America the first covered bridge was built in Connecticut in 1804 by Theodore Burr. Named the Waterford Bridge, it spanned the Hudson River in New York and lasted for 105 years. The next two were built years later in 1851 and 1852 in Oregon City, Oregon, but were washed away by floodwaters in 1853. Before there were covered bridges there were ferries to transport horses, passengers and buggies to the other side of the rivers. Many of these were run by merchants holding the monopoly on the local economy with the fees from the ferries. This prompted taxpayers to build bridges that would be free to all travelers after a toll to help offset costs. The Chambers Road Covered Bridge is located in Delaware County, Ohio on Chambers Road (TR63). Built in 1883, the 73 foot long bridge crosses Big Walnut Creek. Early bridges were built for utility. The later ones were also built with appearance in mind. Although Connecticut boasts the first covered bridge in America, Pennsylvania is usually foremost in the minds of covered bridge lovers. At least 1,500 were built from 1820 to1900 and Pennsylvania has the largest number of covered bridges in the nation: 219 in 40 of its 67 counties. The longest covered bridge in history was built in 1814 in Lancaster County, Pa., at a distance of 5,960 feet more than a mile. Unfortunately, it was destroyed in 1832 by ice and high water.

Next TABLE MOUNTAIN IN BUTTE COUNTY, CALIFORNIA View toward the waterfall on North Table Mountain. A view of the Cliff on Table Mountain. A BEAUTIFUL PLACE Hi, I'm Larry Matthews. Welcome to this web site about a mountain that means a lot to me! Since 1963 I have lived within 30 miles of Table Mountain in Butte County, California. For 20 of those years I lived within its shadow. It is a wonderful mountain and is a very unique mesa. It's located just north-east of Oroville, California which is 75 miles north of Sacramento. For the majority of the year it is green and full of wonderful wildflowers. However it only takes a month of 90+ weather to reduce the color to yellow-brown. During the summer the heat exceeds the 100 degree mark and the mountain then looks barren. I have hiked the mountain innumerable times since 1963. It is wonderful to explore the green, tree lined mesas that extend themselves north-eastward toward the Sierra Nevadas. Even those who have lived here all of their lives don't realize that the mountain is in three pieces. The southern table is the most obvious: the one with the concrete "O" on it that faces Oroville. If one hikes the first table he or she will see that on the northern end the mountain drops off into a valley and immediately comes back up to the butte (the smallest part of the mountain).

Data and photographs of three bridges built in 1858 in the city of Grand Rapids, Michigan.
    http://my.net-link.net/~michaelf/historic.htm
1858 was a banner year for bridge building in the city of Grand Rapids. The toll bridge at Bridge Street, which had burned, was rebuilt. To the south, the impressive Pearl Street Bridge was erected. October of that year saw a third crossing rise over the Grand River at Leonard. All three were toll bridges demanding a fee of 2 cents per foot passenger except on Sundays when churchgoers were allowed free passage. A one year pass could be purchased for $1.00. The Bridge Street Bridge, note icebreakers in river.

The Grand Rapids Bridge Company invested $9,000 into the building of a toll bridge at Bridge Street in 1852. When it was destroyed by fire in 1858 the company rebuilt anew and continued to collect tolls for nearly twenty years. When maintenance costs became too demanding the Bridge Street Bridge was sold to the City of Grand Rapids for $1,000 and freed from tolls. The bridge was nearly victimized by fire yet again in the 1860's when a steam-powered threshing machine stalled midway during its crossing. Embers and steam belched into the cobweb covered rafters and ignited a blaze. The bridge-tender hastily formed a bucket brigade and doused the fire. THANK YOU!!!
I f you pass along a quiet New England road in fall and come upon what appears to be someone's misplaced home, you're tempted to recall the romantic version of the origin of covered bridges... They, of course, were built for discretely kissing your favorite girl while on a long buggy ride home from church. O ne resists the more practical reason nineteenth-century artisans walled-up the sides and placed a roof over the way across the river. The purpose is lost on us because we have huge, steel structural I-beams and have developed the technology to plow the snow from our roads and bridges using 5-ton trucks pushing massive steel blades. In 1830, wheeled-conveyances were stored away in winter and replaced by sleighs and lone beasts. The road agents of the day used large barrel-like vehicles to roll the snow flat and hard. This caused a problem for the bridges, of course, because they were built of wooden timbers and couldn't support the weight of a long winter's snow. Karl Johnson of Groton, Mass., a photographer and producer of Covered Bridge calendars, wrote:

It's an essential stop on European bus tours that spend a day or two in Switzerland, and no wonder: the scenery is breathtaking, the town is dotted with medieval structures, shopping opportunities abound, mountain and lake excursions are nearby, and attractions like the Verkehrshaus Swiss Transportation Museum ) make Lucerne a magnet for Swiss daytrippers and foreign visitors. It would be easy to dismiss Lucerne as a tourist trap, but that would be a mistake. The things that make the city popular also make it worth visitingeven if you're an independent traveler who eschews the beaten path.
