Covered Bridges
of Northeast Ohio and Western Pennsylvania
I recently (Summer/Fall 1999) became obsessed with visiting and taking pictures of covered bridges. They're wonderful historical remnants of a time when life wasn't so fast-paced. Pennsylvania and Ohio are the two states in the U.S. with the most covered bridges. A number of these are found in northeastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania. I've visited and photographed many of the bridges in the counties in this region and have posted them on this page. The pictures are organized by county (see map).

Why Covered?
Many bridges built in the 19th century were made of wood. Wood was cheap and readily available as a building material. However, weather exacted a toll on the wooden structures. Covering the wooden truss-work and planking with a roof and walls protected the bridge from the elements and extended its useful lifespan. Many are now over 100 years old and are still in use.

This is the simplest type of wooden truss. It's only useful for short spans.

This historical bridge built in 1858, is a Town Lattice Truss. It crosses the Battenkill in Eagleville, NY just a few miles from the Vermont border. It has a single span bridge, 101 feet long. This bridge narrowly escaped destruction in 1977 when an abutment was undermined in high water and dumped one end into the kill. It was quickly hoisted back in place on a temporary foundation.

128. Bridges To The Past: Alabama's Covered Bridges
TV program. Photographs and details of the bridges featured. Videos available. Hosted by the University of Alabama Center for Public Television and Radio.
http://www.alabamatv.org/bridges/
W ooden covered bridges played an important role in the development of Alabama by providing safe passage over creeks and rivers at locations where crossing in a horse-drawn wagon or buggy would otherwise be extremely difficult or impossible. During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, hundreds of covered bridges were constructed in the state, but now only a few remain. Those persistent engineering marvels that still stand have become popular tourist attractions, giving visitors insight into the needs and hardships of our ancestors. "Bridges to the Past," visits 11 historic covered bridges in Alabama, all of which are open to the public. From the Coldwater Bridge in Calhoun County, built in 1850, to the Horton Mill Bridge in Blount County, constructed in 1935, "Bridges to the Past" follows a timeline of Alabama history as witnessed by bridges which have withstood the tests of time, high water, and heavy loads. Because of their importance to communities, these bridges were used as meeting places for baptisms, weddings, and at least one hanging. Some were strategic participants in the Civil War while others simply served the daily needs of farmers and merchants. Spanning locations ranging from peaceful brooks to ominous gorges, Alabama’s covered bridges provide picturesque settings for reflecting on life in the past.

Whimsical Surprises
The Wizard of Clay Pottery complex of seven geodesic domes, located at 7851 Route 20A south of Bloomfield, New York, is just one of the many architectural surprises found in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State. In these intriguing buildings Jim and Jamie Kozlowski perform their magic, creating beautiful and functional pottery. For more information visit www.wizardofclay.com or call 585-229-2980.
A structure that now may appear to be whimsical, may not have been so at the time it was built. The Newfield Covered Bridge, located off NY Route 13 in the town of Newfield, New York, was constructed in 1853 with a roof and siding to protect the structure from the elements. The bridge, a single span of 115 feet, crosses the west branch of Cayuga Creek and is one of the oldest covered bridges still open to vehicular use. This is the only historic covered bridge in the Finger Lakes Region and is well worth a look-see. For more information visit www.nycoveredbridges.org.

Pine Brook Covered Bridge
Photograph courtesy of the Mad River Valley Planning District The covered bridges of Vermont are among its most cherished and symbolic historic resources. Two remain in the Village of Waitsfield, the Great Eddy and the Pine Brook. Both reflect the widespread construction of covered bridges on Vermont's public highways from around 1820 to 1904, one of the highlights in Vermont's transportation history. Covered bridges were roofed and enclosed to protect the wooden structural elements from the weather, which in Vermont can be quite harsh. Little more than 100 covered bridges remain in the state, the result of expanding highway systems, intensive commercial development, and physical neglect. Still, Vermont has the greatest concentration of covered bridges in the country, and in the recent past has become dedicated to their preservation. Vermont law now protects all covered bridges and none can be torn down without the permission of the Governor and the Board of Historic Sites. The Great Eddy Bridge, built in 1833, is a major historical and visual landmark of the

Covered Bridges Of
Cottage Grove, Oregon
Cottage Grove has earned the title as the "Covered Bridge Capital of the West." There are six beautiful Covered Bridges within a few minutes of downtown. Building dates of the bridges range from 1920 to1987. In the earlier days of construction, steel and concrete was hard to come by and since timber was more accessible, the bridges were built from locally-cut timber and then covered to keep the rain from aging them. The older bridges are a standing testimony to the skilled craftsmen living in the area. Chambers Railroad Bridge About a half a mile from Main Street on South River Road, just past Harrison Avenue, this bridge is the only remaining covered railroad bridge in Oregon. It was built in 1925 to bring logs to the J.H. Chambers Mill in Cottage Grove. The bridge is 78 feet long.
Stewart Bridge

This 60 foot bridge, built in 1930, is located on Garoutte Road. It was open to vehicular traffic until 1982, despite heavy damage. It has been restored and is now a pedestrian bridge.

Downsville Covered Bridge
A Very Brief Introduction...
The Downsville Covered Bridge was built in 1854 by Robert Murray and completely rehabilitated in 1998. The bridge is located in the Village of Downsville, in the Town of Colchester in Delaware County off NY 30 and NY 206 in Downsville. The bridge spans over the East Branch of the Delaware River and is a Long Truss and Queen covered bridge with a span of 174 feet. The bridge, once part of old NY Route 206, is still open to vehicular traffic, but can only accomodate one lane of traffic, with a height clearance of only 6 feet (I don't even meet the clearance specifications as I am 6'3"). The Village of Downsville celebrates their historic covered bridge each June by having a Covered Bridge Festival. The Downsville Covered Bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places listing in April 1999.
