    Vermont's
Covered Bridges Tootin' Our Horn Normally, we don't bother with those awards you see all over some websites. We've been offered a number of them, but they are generally meaningless link exchanges, so we simply say, "Thanks, but no thanks." This one, however, is different. We actually put a lot of effort into something and have been recognized for it. Thanks to a group of Vermont photographers (including myself), Virtual Vermont Internet Magazine has what is believed to be the Web's only complete presentation of photographs and historical information on Vermont's Covered Bridges. Every one of 'em. StudyWeb took a look at it and liked it so much that they have included this feature in their Architecture section, calling it "one of the best educational resources on the Web." Additionally, National Geographic saw Dave MacKenzie's photo of the Cooley Bridge, and liked it enough to buy it for use in an upcoming magazine. Our thanks to Dave MacKenzie, Tom Hildreth and Rick Bersaw for the photography, and to StudyWeb for the recognition.

      Covered Bridges of Vermont

      by Ed Barna
Vermont's covered bridges stand as symbols of an honored past and as proof of that past's enduring relevance. These tunnels into yesteryear recall the days when town selectmen would specify that a bridge be built"a load of hay high and wide" and when the resulting barn like structure would become, by turns, a kiosk for advertisements, a clubhouse for the neighborhood children, and an excuse for courting couples to steal a kiss while out on a drive. They are a delight to the eye, an almost natural expression of the forested landscape roundabout and an ornament to the hilly terrain's many splendid streams. Yet they are not simply quaint relics; the great majority continue to perform their original function, now carrying traffic even heavier than their designers had anticipated. If Vermont has the most covered bridges per square mile in the country, that is partly because many were built later than in other states. That, in turn, is because Vermont was long a frontier, where Indian raids and legal battles over land ownership limited settlement before the Revolutionary War.

Flood, fire and modernization have taken their toll on the covered bridges of Michigan. Where once hundreds of covered bridges spanned the State's rivers and creeks, now less than a dozen remain Though few in number compared with neighboring states, Michigan's covered bridges offer a diversity of settings and architectural styles spanning a broad range of history and culture. The remaining group includes original 19th century survivors, replicas of predecessors lost to the elements, and a transplant from Pennsylvania. Bridges Maps Links E-Mail ... Covered Bridges
    Bailey Island Bridge
    Harpswell, Maine
This bridge is located on Route 24 about 14 miles south of the junction of Route US 1 and 24. For many years, the fishermen who lived on Bailey Island wanted a bridge to connect their island with Orr's Island. For many years, the town of Harpswell turned down the request. But things changed when the Legislature approved a law allowing the State and the counties to participate in bridge funding. And in 1926, a contract was signed for construction of a new bridge. The bridge design presented some unique problems because of the tides in the area. Finally, it was decided to build a crib bridge using granite slabs from nearby quarries, similar in design to a bridge that had been observed in Scotland. The granite slabs were sufficiently heavy to withstand the buffeting of wind and wave and the open cribbing or cellular construction permitted the tide to ebb and flow freely without increasing the normal tidal current to any appreciable degree. A concrete roadway was placed on top of the granite cribs. A sidewalk was added to the bridge in 1951, and guardrails were added in 1961. On July 19, 1984 the Bailey Island Bridge was dedicated as a historic civil engineering landmark. The bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

    http://webster.state.nh.us/nhdhr/bridges/intro.html
INTRODUCTION Covered bridges represent a link with our past. They stand as monuments to builders who had the vision and the ability to design and construct engineering masterpieces of wood. Men such as Ithiel Town, Stephen Long, James Tasker, and more recently, Milton Graton have left a lasting impression on the landscape. The romanticist might see that covered bridges represent a more relaxed time, free from the stress of modern age. These structures evoke images of a slow horse and buggy ride to church on a quiet Sunday, a stolen kiss under the cover of the bridge, or the peacefulness of fishing from a seat on the edge of the bridge, line in the water yet indifferent as to whether or not a fish bites. The historian might see in these spans the development of truss types still in use today, the original attempts to understand the strength of materials, and the analysis of stress on complex structures. Everyone can agree that these bridges were essential to progress by replacing dangerous ferry crossings, reducing the isolation of rural areas, increasing travel speed, and aiding commerce. Because of their obvious antiquity and their visual appeal, covered bridges have long been appreciated. New Hampshire's wooden bridges were highlighted in W. Edward White's 1942 booklet

    Covered Bridges
    Waldo-Hancock Bridge
    Prospect-Verona, Maine
The Waldo-Hancock Bridge, Maine's first long-span suspension bridge, is located near Bucksport, carrying Route US 1 and Route 3 over the Penobscot River between the towns of Prospect and Verona. The bridge was opened to traffic on November 16, 1931 and was a toll bridge until October 31, 1953. The main span is 800 feet long and provides a navigational clearance of 135 feet. The tower's cantilever vierendeel truss design deviates from the predominant archway design of most suspension bridge towers. The straight lines of the tower design blend with the natural rocky setting, the stern lines of nearby Fort Knox, and the colonial architecture of the local area.
