Delightful anecdotes describe structures as well as the men who built them. Accurate line drawings depict barns attached to houses, an "open" log barn in Virginia, a "top hat" barn in North Carolina, a bridge with a pedestrian walkway in rural New York state, a 2,088-foot covered bridge at Clark's Ferry, Pennsylvania, and more. At one time in the 19th century, Kentucky had hundreds of covered bridges, whose roofs protected their complicated support systems from the elements to lessen the need for maintenance. Tailored to fit individual roads and streams, each bridge was a unique piece of rural architecture. Upkeep was usually a local affair, too, with every able-bodied man in the community expected to put in his share of hours. The Kentucky Covered Bridge Association was formed in 1964 to help preserve the last remaining examples. , with links to photos and descriptions.

Oregon Covered Bridges
At one time Oregon had more than 400 covered bridges. Today only a little more than 50 remain. The covered bridge blended well into the early economy of the Oregon countryside.
The material for construction was close at hand and the prevailing pioneer spirit was equal to the problems it presented. It was well known that wood, protected from the elements, would last considerably longer than that which was left in the open.
When heavier loads and increased traffic called for surdier bridges of concrete and steel, the covered bridge began to disappear at an alarming rate.
Today, the pioneer spirit prevails once again as individuals, local and state organizations as well as government agencies strive to protect and restore Oregon's covered bridges.

Next HISTORIC BRIDGES IN BUTTE, NEVADA AND YUBA COUNTIES, CALIFORNIA A VIEW OF BRIDGEPORT COVERED BRIDGE. (Photo taken: 3-17-00) Hi, I'm Larry Matthews. I've been a history nut all of my life, and I have always been interested in bridges. Over the years, my special fascination has been with old, historical covered bridges and truss/suspension bridges in the Northern California area. You might think that all of the covered bridges are in the Eastern part of the United States. However, in Butte, Nevada and Yuba Counties there are four, beautiful and unique covered bridges that are well worth your visiting. I have also included five non-covered bridges from this area. I have written a short essay on all nine bridges. The great thing about all of these bridges is that getting there is half the fun. They are all located in beautiful areas. Additionally, as they are all located within 100 miles of each other you could visit them all in one day! Essays Include: 1. Oregon Creek Bridge - Yuba County

    Thomas Mill Bridge
The Only Standing Historic Covered Bridge within Philadelphia City Limits
Covered bridges symbolize small-town America. Something from the nineteenth century, a little archaic and strange to nineteen-nineties eyes, picturesque and sentimental, "kissing bridges" recall a time when life was simpler and closer to the land if only in our dreams. Covered bridges complement autumn leaves and autumn emotions. Photogenic and often remote from the Interstate Highways and cities of the twentieth century, covered bridges lure the explorer to find the little streams and dirt roads that the twentieth century has almost passed by. These documents are a guide to the old covered bridges of Southeastern Pennsylvania and nearby areas, that is, the counties of Berks, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Lancaster, Philadelphia, and nearby New Jersey, Maryland, and Delaware State. There are several popular myths that surround the bridge. First, it is not painted gold. It is orange; "International Orange," specifically. Some also believe the bridge is painted every year. This is not true, either. It has only been painted twice: once in 1937 and again from 1965-1995. However, touch-up work is a constant necessity because of the fog and salt air. There is another myth that the Golden Gate Bridge is the biggest bridge in the world.
