Arcade (architecture)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
See arcade for other uses of the term.
The Cleveland Arcade in downtown Cleveland (late 1960s) An arcade is a passage or walkway covered over by a succession of arches or vaults supported by columns, or else it is a covered passage fronted by a series of arches. In cities, buildings with arcades along their street-level fronts, the interior faces of city walls , and bridges covered by arcades all became popular locations for small shops and stalls. They were protected from sun and weather and attracted considerable, guaranteed foot traffic. Over time, the term "arcade" came to be used specifically for streets lined with small vendors. (Roofed-over arcades, known in Italy as gallerias , later developed into shopping malls The term was also adopted by carnivals and amusement parks , where the row of shops selling food and other goods were joined by those offering games of various sorts and were called "amusement arcades" or "midways". Amusement arcades were later opened as permanent establishments. The games came to be known as arcade games , and since the explosion of electronic games in the these establishments became known as video arcades edit

Paul Stetson, Instructor The Assignment- Working in groups of three, build a 1:24 scale model of a covered bridge in our area. Kate Pellegrini, Applied Architecture II - Shelburne Museum Bridge - The bridge project was very interesting and integrated building the bridge in the woodshop with finding mathematical formulae, drawing and constructing a "to-scale" model. The process began back in September with a 'Vermont Covered Bridges" field trip.
Shelburne Museum Bridge's top section (on side)
Back in September, the class visited five Vermont covered bridges. Our job was to learn about each bridge by taking measurements of each covered bridge. We visited the Quinlan, Sequin, Charlotte, Shelburne Museum and the Lake Shore bridge. We found a lot of similarities and differences between the bridge's sizes, constructions, trusses, arches and materials used. Each group of two or three people blindly picked a bridge. We picked the Shelburne Museum bridge.
When we returned to school, the project was continued by deriving a formula of 1':2". Every measured chord and beam was adjusted to scale and those were the measurements that we would use for the building of the bridge.

Covered Bridges of Vermont
by Ed Barna
For many people, covered bridges are much more than picturesque: They represent a living link with an alluring part of our past. Along with a sense of romance, we associate them with an era of hard work, creativity, and ingenuity. Each bridge sparks a new question: Why was it built, how, when, and by whom? How has it lasted when so many others have disappeared? This guide will answer these and many other questions about all 106 of Vermont's authentic, historic covered bridges. Arranged by convenient driving tours, it provides precise directions to help travelers find each bridge touring through the most scenic countryside along the way and shares each bridge's history and folklore. Advice on photographing the bridges, parking, and finding nearby historical sites and museums is also included in each tour. An introduction tells the colorful story of "the great truss race" in the early days of bridge architecture and design. Includes: - Driving itineraries
- History and folklore
- Advice on photographing the bridges
- Details on nearby historical sites and museums

Nestled along back roads like hidden jewels, they are the perfect excuse for a leisurely drive in the country. These charming passages through time combine with other Bluegrass-area attractions to create memorable day excursions from Lexington. Here are some suggested itineraries. Blue Note: Covered bridges began to be built across Kentucky rivers and creeks in the late 1700s. Some were the work of nationally known bridge architect Lewis Wernwag. Constructed with often-elaborate trusses made of wood, they were covered to keep the main timbers dry and protected from the elements, a service they also provided for travelers, their horses and their cargo in the days before automobiles and trucks.

Bridge Building
Easier - Bridges are structures built over a river, railroad track, road, or some other obstacle. They allow people or vehicles to cross from one side to another. Harder - Bridges are structures used by people and vehicles to make crossing areas easier in travel. Engineers build bridges over rivers, lakes, ravines, canyons, railroads, and highways. Bridges must be built strong enough to safely support their own weight as well as the weight of the people and vehicles that pass over it. The bridge must also withstand natural occurrences that include weathering, earthquakes, strong winds, and freezing and thawing. Bridge from Fact Monster
