Breeding Bird Atlas On a June morning a birder will spend a couple of hours in a favorite marsh watching birds with a special purpose. He'll note all birds seen and heard, and pay particular attention to their behavior. He's looking for evidence of breeding. He's not disturbing his quarries by searching out nests, simply observing behavioral cues that indicate breeding. Our birder is participating in Atlas 2000, a project of the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation and the Federation of NYS Bird Clubs. National Audubon Society of New York is a partner and member of the steering committee, along with the NY Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, the Cornell University Department of Natural Resources, and the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology. Atlas 2000 is a multi-year effort to locate bird species and document their breeding habitats in the Empire State. This is a replication of the first Breeding Bird Atlas that was conducted from 1980 to 1985 and resulted in the publication of The Atlas of Breeding Birds in New York State in 1988. Atlases of this kind, first developed in Britain, have been done in many states, including Vermont, Connecticut and Pennsylvania. New York will be the first to repeat it at the desired 20-year interval.

Long-eared Owl
Asio otus (Linnaeus) Status Rare resident. Breeds. Although other nineteenth-century authors had rated it "rare" or "not common," Harold F. Tufts (1899) designated it "common except in winter" in Kings County. Apart from one report each from Annapolis, Digby, Queens and Shelburne counties, all summer reports since 1960 have come from Kings County, where all but one of reported nestings also have occurred. Scattered reports from southwestern counties and nocturnal mist-netting on Bon Portage Island by bird banders from Acadia University in recent years have revealed a distinct outbound migration in October and November. An individual on Sable Island on 29 July 1966 suggests such movements may begin even earlier. Some remain in winter; roosts of 3-12 individuals have been found regularly by Bernard L. Forsythe in mixed woods in Kings County, but only a few have been recorded in other parts of the province at this season. Birds on Cape Sable on 10 May 1972 and 29 March 1981 were presumably returning migrants. Description Length: 35-42 cm.

Oregon Breeding Bird Atlas Project
The Oregon Breeding Bird Atlas Project started in 1995 as a five-year project to map the breeding ranges of Oregon birds. Currently, the OBBAP Steering Committee and various bird experts around the state are in the process of reviewing and compiling the information gathered by hundreds of atlas volunteers in preparation of publication of the atlas CD this year. Below, Project Coordinator Paul Adamus provides an update on the project's progress. The final season of atlas data collection was concluded in 1999, and plans are moving ahead for release of products shortly after the new year, 2001, as follows: 2. Birds of Oregon: A General Reference. Many of us are also assisting Matt Hunter, Dave Marshall, and Alan Contreras with species write-ups as they prepare this master volume on Oregon birds. This book, scheduled for publication by OSU Press sometime in 2001, will be the primary printed outlet for our atlas maps. It will lack the many features of the atlas CD, but will present species life history and habitat information in greater detail. 3. Well after the above have been published and distributed, if there is interest and financial support, we may do a separate publication run a book containing just the atlas maps.

Oregon Breeding Bird Atlas With pleasure we announce the release of the CD-ROM for the Oregon Breeding Bird Atlas Project. This CD is the culmination of 8 years of diligent efforts by many of you who participated in the 5-year project, the largest wildlife survey in Oregon's history. We are hoping this CD represents a milestone in Oregon ornithology and an innovative way of communicating biodiversity data. Here's why you should purchase the CD:
  • All the profits will support research on distribution of Oregon birds, under a small grants program administered by Oregon Field Ornithologists (OFO), your statewide birders organization. The easy-to-use CD contains many times the amount of cross-referenced information and detailed illustrations than could be published in a book of comparable cost. The CD is the sole product of the project. Most of the information will not be published, at least in the near term, in book format. The interactive CD includes:
Color maps of 275 species believed to nest in Oregon, at 3 map scales. These are the largest detailed maps of Oregon species distributions available from any source. At the finest scale, many roads and streams are also shown. Roads covered by project volunteers are highlighted.
