About Bird Care Dog Care ... Clients Only Bird Topics: Emergencies Pet Bird Care Budgerigars Canaries ... Emergencies
The ill bird loses body heat very quickly when it stops eating, as the energy reserves are depleted by illness. By re-establishing the normal body temperature and blood sugar levels, most lives are saved. Pet Bird Care
Hand reared parrot birds make the best pets. Parrots have always made excellent pets because of their affectionate and loving nature. As well, their ability to imitate speech and noises has endeared these birds to man since ancient times. Budgerigars
The 4 million years of prolific breeding still remains in the blood (genes) of the modern day budgerigar and can be restored by providing it with exactly the same conditions that made the wild bird so successful. We call this "Good Aviary Management". Canaries
Breeding canaries for competitive exhibition has always been an extremely difficult challenge for seasoned fanciers let alone newcomers to the hobby, largely because the canary of today is so much larger than the original birds.
Backyard and exhibition poultry flocks are at a distinct health advantage because they run free. Free-range poultry are able to select exactly what they need from the yard in terms of trace elements and vitamin-rich green food.

Emu Birds - History
Emu-birds (Dromaius novaehollandiae) are members of the ratite family along with ostrich, rhea, cassowary and kiwi. These creatures have flat breastbones and lack wing muscles. They cannot fly, but have strong legs and run very fast. Emu are prehistoric birds that originated about 80 million years ago in Australia. For the Aborigines these birds are the core of existence, because the birds provide them with food, clothing and spiritual sustenance.
Emu Birds - Habitat
ABS TV
Australian Braodcasting Corporation The emu-bird lives only in mainland Australia. They inhabit eucalypt forests, mallee, heathland, desert shrub lands and sand plains. After heavy rains these birds are found in desert areas. Emus also can be found near big cities. They suffer from lack of native vegetation that has been cleared to provide agricultural land.
Emu Birds - Taxonomy
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Subphylum: Vertebrata
Class: Aves
Order: Struthioniformes
Family: Dromaiidae
Genus: Dromaius
Species: Dromaius novaehollandiae
Emu Birds - Description
This species is the second largest loving bird. They are flightless, large and shaggy. Their secondary feather that branches from the base of the main feather is the same length as the main feather. Feathers that hang limply from the body of the emu give the bird a furry look. The neck and legs of the emus are long. Emu wings are very short and are reduced to about 20 cm. The sunlight gives the feathers their brown color due to melanin. When the sunlight fades, emus become paler. Emu-birds have three toes and are environmentally friendly because they don't destroy even the most delicate terrain.

Article IV - Breeding The Quaker Parrot

    BREEDING THE QUAKER PARROT
    by Theresa Jordan
For anyone interested in breeding birds, whether they be a novice or boast years of experience, I think the Quaker is an excellent choice for many reasons. We have found that they are, by far, the easiest of all birds to breed. For one, the cost associated with starting a hobby or business of breeding birds will be considerably less, due to the availability of these birds and their very reasonable purchase price. And unlike some other birds who can be unusually "picky", a Quaker will usually bond quite closely with any mate provided to them-the only minor problem being that to provide a suitable mate, you will almost certainly have to have them surgically sexed or DNA tested to ensure that you do indeed have both a male and a female! If money and space permits, a simpler way to pair Quakers (although not 100% reliable every time) is to buy several youngsters, put them all together in a large flight cage, provide several Cockatiel or conure-sized nest boxes and let them pair up naturally. Quakers generally have no problems with picking a suitable mate. Also, Quakers are sexually mature in as little as 12 to 18 months of age, meaning that even if you purchase them quite young and keep them as pets in your home, you won't have long to wait before you have potential parents. If you choose to breed them in a colony environment, their group nesting behavior is especially interesting, with their huge communal nest providing a spectacular display for any aviary.

Northwest Territories/Nunavut Bird Checklist Survey
The Northwest Territories / Nunavut Bird Checklist Survey is a bird monitoring program that relies on the observation and reports of volunteers.. It was initiated to collect much needed information on the distribution, abundance and breeding status of birds in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut Canadian Wildlife Service in 1995 as a response to needs identified in the Canadian Landbirds Monitoring Strategy Checklist data can provide a great deal of useful information that is otherwise difficult to collect in a large, remote area like the North. By working cooperatively with volunteers, a database of bird sightings is being used as baseline information for further studies, environmental assessments, more accurate mapping of bird distributions, and (if the database becomes large enough) detecting major bird population changes.

Biodiversity and Climate Change
Warnings from the Wild Documentary Climate change conferences BALANCE Waterbirds on the edge Forests in flux ... Changing Oceans The world’s climate patterns has always been highly dynamic. Recent decades, however, have seen new patterns, indicating more rapid changes than has been seen for thousands of years. These changes have been linked to equally rapid changes in atmospheric chemistry, and the release of "greenhouse gases" by human activities. For the first time in the history of our planet a single species is driving a significant shift in the global climate. International efforts are being focussed towards reducing the amounts of gas emissions, however climate changes have already begun, and the impacts will increase considerably over coming decades no matter how successful the efforts at emissions reductions. Global biodiversity is under particular risk. Already hemmed in by habitat loss, pollution and over-exploitation, species and natural systems are now faced with the need to adapt to new regimes of temperature, precipitation and other climatic extremes. Nature conservation in the new millennium has increasingly difficult challenges to face. For help with this web site contact:
