The Alberta Bird Atlas Project (1987-1992) ... Help monitor the birds, become an atlasser! A General Review of Bird Atlas Projects The goal of a breeding bird atlas project is to survey and record the current relative abundance and geographical distribution of each breeding bird species. In general the wide movements of many bird species make the location of their relatively sedentary breeding stations important. Therefore, bird atlases often concentrate on breeding bird behavior. Over the last twenty-five years, bird atlas projects have become a popular international activity, with birdwatchers taking part in Bird Atlas Projects around the world. Because data is collected in a coordinated fashion, bird atlas projects provide a scientifically valid snapshot of bird distribution and abundance, which can be compared with historic or future data to monitor changes in bird populations. These changes can then be assessed in relation to environmental factors and human activities, such as changes in land use practices. Such evaluations provide baseline information for conducting environmental assessments and research, and for developing conservation and management plans for birds and their habitats.

Breeding Bird Atlases North American Breeding Bird Atlas Explorer
The NBII Bird Conservation Node partners with the USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center to develop the North American Breeding Bird Atlas (BBA) Explorer website, and the BBA Viewer, which provide access to results from multiple state and provincial Breeding Bird Atlas projects. The BBA Explorer website provides information on the methods used in each Breeding Bird Atlas project, and allows users to retrieve Atlas project results in a tabular form by species, block or region (e.g., by county). The BBA Viewer is a mapping application that allows users to map species results from multiple Breeding Bird Atlases in North America.

Hot on the Trail of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker
by Tim Gallagher What is it about the ivory-billed woodpecker? Why does this ghost of the southern swamps arouse such an obsessive level of passion in its devotees, who range from respected researchers to the flakiest Loch Ness monster fanatics and Elvis chasers? Since the early twentieth century, scientists have been trying their best to prove that the ivory-bill is extinct. But every time they think they've finally closed the door, the bird makes an unexpected appearance. It happened in the 1920s, and it's happened in almost every subsequent decade. For more than 60 years, each sighting has been met with ridicule and scorn. Respected researchers and naturalists have been branded as quacks just for having the temerity to say that the ivory-bill still exists. Yet the reports still trickle in. Is there any truth to these sightings, or are they just a case of wishful thinking, misidentification, or outright fabrication?
