Ranges of North American Breeding Birds
Visualizing Long-term Population Changes In North American Breeding Birds
Data and maps presented courtesy of Jeff Price , Northern Prairie Science Center. Legend: See graphical legend below and on each map. These maps show changes in the distribution and abundance patterns of some North American birds for the last 20 years. For each species there are four maps, each representing the average distribution and abundance pattern over the five-year periods 1970-1974, 1975-1979, 1980-1984, and 1985-1989. The maps are based on data collected by the USFWS/CWS Breeding Bird Survey (BBS). Only BBS routes that were run at least once during each of the five-year periods were used (about 1300 routes). The maps were created in the software package Surfer using a kriging technique to interpolate mean relative abundances for areas where no routes were run. On each map, a portion of northeast Canada was blanked out because there were not enough routes to allow for adequate interpolation. All of the maps in this presentation use the same color scale (shown below). The minimum value mapped was 0.5 birds per route, which represents the edge of the species range.

(2) There are probably a few species naming issues that lead to empty result pages. Please bring these to our attention, and we will correct them.
(3) Maps (e.g., distribution maps) have not yet been updated with 2004 data. Older versions are still available, so please note the time periods covered by each set of maps.
(4) Some species are grouped for analysis. These are indicated on the selection lists.
New addition on 27 May 2005: Data for annual index graphs are now listed below the graphics in the regional and species-specific trend results.

Breeding Bird Atlas Publication is in the Works
The Atlas Steering Committee proudly announces that five years of fieldwork have been completed as planned! More than 1,100 registered volunteers have contributed data in 5,224 blocks (98%) and we now have current distribution maps for 251 breeding species. In 2005 we are conducting directed clean-up field work to ensure that all blocks will be surveyed. We are accepting records of new species or upgrades anywhere in the state. Also, if you have data from any previous year of the project (2000-04), please send it in right away. Any data submitted after 30 September 2005 will not be included in the publication. The Steering Committee is moving ahead to publish the results of the project. Co-editors Kevin McGowan and Kimberley Corwin began work in January 2005 to create informative distribution maps, analyze changes between the first and current atlas data sets, and produce a dazzling atlas publication. Ten artists have been working since late 2004 to illustrate the publication, which is scheduled to be available in late 2007.

Introduction The Arkansas Audobon Society initiated the Arkansas Breeding Bird Atlas (ABBA) Project in 1994 for the purpose of developing a series of distributional maps for all species of birds that breed within the state. Initial funding of the project came from the Arkansas Game and fish commission, the University of Arkansas, and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation in Washington, D.C. Data collection began in 1994. Success of this project is dependant upon volunteers for data collection among the 875 total blocks within the state. Methods The sampling unit is a 25km (9 square miles) block that has been randomly selected within each U.S. Geological Survey topographic map in Arkansas. A total of 918 topographic maps cover the entire state of Arkansas, but 43 of these are more than 50% outside the state and were deleted from the project. That leaves a total of 875 blocks to be surveyed state-wide, which is about 12-15 blocks per county.
Each volunteer receives an 8.5 by 11 inch copy of a map of a USGS quadrangle map with the location of the block clearly marked, and an 8.5 by 11 inch map of the plot itself. Different classes of road types are shown on the maps, from interstates and state highways to dirt roads, logging roads, and roads on levees. Major bodies of water are shown, as are major rivers and streams. Cities and towns are also labeled.
