Stay Connected!
One of the keys to good mental health is keeping up your ties with others. Spending time with optimistic people helps improve your outlook and fight depression. Stay in touch with friends and family. Add to your connections by joining clubs, volunteering, and taking classes with others who share your interests. Friends you can count on will enrich and brighten your life.
Healing Ribbons is one of the positive outcomes from my battle against breast cancer. I found that the adage is true, you can make lemonade when life gives you lemons.
Like many women having undergone breast cancer surgery, I am at risk of developing lymphedema, a painful swelling that typically affects the arms. As such, it is necessary for me to wear a medical bracelet . Being unhappy with the plastic one given to me at the hospital, I was inspired to develop a collection of jewelry-designed medical bracelets.
This desire evolved into a complete collection of jewelry designed to support individuals touched by breast cancer and other medical conditions. And, more importantly, it is a means to further the fight against breast cancer. Healing Ribbons gladly donates 10% of its proceeds to the

More articles on Public and environmental health Cigarette smoking has been suggested as a cause of breast cancer, but many studies addressing the relationship have yielded inconsistent results. A possible explanation is that many of these studies have overlooked the potential effects of passive exposure to cigarette smoke when assessing the effects of active smoking. A further source of confusion is the hypothesised existence of a window of vulnerability to tobacco smoke carcinogens during childhood and adolescence. We summarise the epidemiological evidence for a causal association between smoking and breast cancer and consider recent studies on the effects of active and passive exposure to cigarette smoke in the context of this hypothesised window of vulnerability. Conflicting results on smoking and breast cancer A review of publications on the relationship between smoking and breast cancer to 1984 found more evidence for a protective than for a harmful effect of cigarette smoking.

Lifetime Viewers Help Get New Breast Cancer Legislation Introduced on Capitol Hill U.S. Senators Olympia J. Snowe (R-ME) and Mary L. Landrieu (D-LA) and U.S. Representatives Sue Kelly (R-NY) and Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) introduced The Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act of 2005. As part of the network's Stop Breast Cancer for Life advocacy campaign, Lifetime has been working to pass this legislation since 1996 and now has collected more than 10 million petition signatures from viewers who have showed support for Congress to pass this bill. The bill's protections for those facing breast cancer include: A second opinion. This bill assures a patient of a second opinion for any cancer diagnosis. A cancer diagnosis must be reliable. Inpatient coverage. The bill ensures that a health care provider cannot limit hospital stays for a mastectomy or breast-conserving surgery to less than 48 hours, and also assures a 24-hour stay for lymph node dissection. Support for lumpectomy treatment. This bill requires coverage for radiation therapy for patients undergoing lumpectomy. Together with the assurance of inpatient care, this act removes the economic incentive for a woman to select mastectomy simply to reduce the immediate cost of treatment.

Thorough breast cancer surgery may make radiation unnecessary
May 13, 1999 Web posted at: 2:37 p.m. EDT (1837 GMT) (CNN) Patients with a common, curable form of breast cancer may be undergoing radiation treatments unnecessarily, according to a study in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine. The University of Southern California study of women with "ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS)," a cancer of the milk glands of the breast, found that among 133 women whose surgeons removed a 10-millimeter margin around the tumor, the chance of the cancer reappearing after eight years was 4 percent. But when the margin of additional tissue removed was less than 1 millimeter, the risk jumped to 50 percent.

Oral contraceptives and breast cancer
FROM Oral contraceptives and breast cancer: Women with a strong family history of breast cancer who had taken older oral contraceptives may have an increased risk of developing breast cancer, a new study indicates. Oral contraceptives containing the hormones estrogen and progestin have been on the market for over 35 years. Those formulated before 1975 were more likely to have higher doses of both, but since 1975 they have had lower doses to reduce side effects and the risk of vascular disease.
