THE WONDERS OF
BRAZILIAN MUSIC
I'm no super-expert, but I have been listening to Brazilian music since the late 1970s, and I know what I like. Although some Brazilian music is incredible, a lot of it really sucks. So what I've set out to do is to steer people towards records I think are good and warn them about some that I think are...*ahem*... not so good. I've tried to be as thorough as possible, providing discographies for several well-known artists and reviewing as many albums as I could lay my hands on, and I plan to expand this site regularly, as I hear more records. You might not agree with or like everything you read here. For one thing, my criteria are primarily musical, not literary. If I like the way something sounds musically, I'll recommend it. If the music sounds cheesy, I'll say so. This means I include plenty of negative reviews as well as positive ones, which may seem odd at first, but believe me if you can manage to avoid the lame albums, you'll enjoy the great ones even more. My apologies to fans of the Portuguese language who feel that the lyrics are everything when it comes to Brazilian music. I can see your point, but there are still some records that are more fun to listen to than others, and that's the approach I'm taking on this site.

http://www.studentorg.umd.edu/mbs/brazilianhistory.htm
Brazilian History The first European settlers to arrive in the area were the Portuguese , led by the adventurous Pedro Cabral , who began the colonial period in 1500. The Portuguese reportedly found native Indians numbering around seven million. A lot of these had a nomad lifestyle, with only limited agriculture and temporary dwellings. However, there were villages that often had as many as 5000 inhabitants. Cultural life appears to have been richly developed, although both tribal warfare and cannibalism were ubiquitous. The few remaining traces of Brazil's Indian tribes reveal little of their lifestyle, unlike the evidence from other Andean tribes. The Brazilian Indians never developed a centralized civilization like the Inca or Maya, and left very little evidence for archaeologists to study: some pottery, shell mounds and skeletons. Today there are less than 200,000 native Brazilians left . Most of them live in the hidden jungles of the Brazilian interior. In 1500, Pedro Alvares Cabral set sail from Lisbon to try and reach India. Instead, he arrived on what is now the Brazilian coast. Reputedly, this happened by 'accident', although some historians say that the existence of Brazil was already well-known to mariners. In 1531

Texas State University alternative history of the country, by examining how Brazilians from various backgrounds accepted or rejected different concepts of national identity, particularly the official concept of nationhood at specific historical moments. Part of the series “The Human Tradition around the World,” The Human Tradition in Modern Brazil shares in the general purpose of the series to “personalize” (i), or give a human face to the many events and conflicts that shape history. The essays in the volume examine history through life stories of everyday people, an approach characteristic of the new social history, a field that emerged in the social-political aftermath of the 1960’s and 1970’s. It is during that period when alternative voices—voices that can be understood as counter-ideological because they have spoken against the dominant ideology of the status quo—start to be consistently heard in Brazil and in other countries: voices of women, of racial and ethnic minorities, of gays and lesbians. Some of these voices are recorded in The Human Tradition in Modern Brazil , although the contributors do not write only about men and women who entered public life in the second half of the twentieth century. Rather, the essays follow Brazil’s history as seen and understood from the perspective of the story/the history of “ordinary” people since the beginning of Brazil’s nationhood. Thus, the first essay in the volume focuses on the public life of Daniel Gomes de Freitas (b. 1806), a career army officer whose life illustrates the effects Brazil’s political independence and its immediate aftermath had on people’s lives. As in this first essay by Hendrik Kraay, the studies that follow seek “to illuminate how different historical actors experienced, . . . and responded to historical moments of broad importance” (Beattie, Introduction xvi).

135. SONGS OF BRAZILIAN BIRDS
Features sound clips of 51 different species.
http://www.mma.gov.br/ingles/cgmi/cantoave/canto.html
SONGS OF BRAZILIAN BIRDS Portuguese Français The luxuriant diversity of Brazilian nature also expresses itself in the huge variety of bird songs. The selection made for this CD tries to illustrate the richness of the biodiversity in Brazil. Songs amongst the most beautiful, strange, or rare birds from all habitats have been selected from Amapá to Rio Grande do Sul. Unfortunately, many species of Brazilian birds are threatened. Without urgent action for preservation, the voices of the Hyacinthine Macaw (4), Great Xenops (10), and Brasília Tapaculo (31), among others, will never be heard again. Scientific research on wildlife sounds needs to be intensified, in order to contribute to the conservation of nature: for instance, the Amazonian Pygmy-Owl (40) has been describes only recently (Vielliard 1989). Man always loved bird songs. It is believed that Gonçalves Dias was remembering the song of the Tropical Mockingbird (15) when he wrote his famous poem about the nostalgia of exile. The Indians created marvellous stories on the song of the Organ Wren (51). Could not modern society, with its power, honour and save these natural marvels ?

Pedro Alvares Cabral claimed Brazil for Portugal in 1500. The colony was ruled from Lisbon until 1808, when Dom Joao VI and the rest of the Portuguese royal family fled from Napoleon's army, and established its seat of government in Rio de Janeiro. Dom Joao VI returned to Portugal in 1821. His son declared Brazil's independence on September 7, 1822, and became emperor with the title of Dom Pedro I. His son, Dom Pedro II, ruled from 1831 to 1889, when a federal republic was established in a coup led by Deodoro da Fonseca, Marshal of the Army. Slavery had been abolished a year earlier by the Regent Princess Isabel while Dom Pedro II was in Europe. Goulart's years in office were marked by high inflation, economic stagnation, and the increasing influence of radical political elements. The armed forces, alarmed by these developments, staged a coup on March 31, 1964. The coup leaders chose as president Humberto Castello Branco, followed by Arthur da Costa e Silva (1967-69), Emilio Garrastazu Medici (1968-74), and Ernesto Geisel (1974-79), all of whom were senior army officers. Geisel began a democratic opening that was continued by his successor, Gen. Joao Baptista de Oliveira Figueiredo (1979-85). Figueiredo not only permitted the return of politicians exiled or banned from political activity during the 1960s and 1970s, but also allowed them to run for state and federal offices in 1982.
