Indians Out!
President Fernando Henrique Cardoso and the Indian leadership were supposed to meet, but this never happened. Cardoso accused the Indians of "throwing the President's invitation back in his face". The Indians were afraid the meeting would be misinterpreted.
Émerson Luís It wasn't a flattering scene for Brazil while celebrating its 500 years. Far from it. There it was on TV all over the world the military police violently repressing with tear gas and rubber bullets a peaceful march by some 2000 Brazilian Indians representing more than 200 different peoples and sympathizers with their cause, in Porto Seguro, state of Bahia. That on April 22, the same day Brazil was celebrating the arrival of the Portuguese to the land, 500 years ago and in the same area Pedro Álvares Cabral's ships are believed to have arrived. In a dramatic picture published on the newspapers and on the Internet, a bare-chested Indian, wearing only swimming shorts, is seen lying down on the road trying to prevent the advance of the police that just walked over his body. The police action left dozens slightly injured. Several people including a Xukuru Kariri Indian, who had both legs burnt, had to be hospitalized. A meeting between the President and the Indian leadership, scheduled for Coroa Vermelha on April 22, never happened. President Fernando Henrique Cardoso accused the Indians of "throwing the President's invitation back in his face". The Indians backed out after considering that a meeting with Cardoso, on that symbolic date, could be misinterpreted. They did not want to be seen as supporting the celebrations they are against. Instead the Indian movement chose to prepare a document denouncing the government and the violence they were subjected to by the Bahia police.

Brazil
Dateline: 11/09/97 (Rev. 10/18/00) Brazil (maps) is the fifth largest country in the world; in terms of population (163 million) as well as land area.* It is the economic leader of South America, with the ninth largest economy in the world, and a large iron and aluminum ore reserve. The Brazilian city of Sao Paulo is the third largest in the world with more than 22 million people. Physical Geography From the Amazon basin in the north and west to the Brazilian Highlands in the southeast, Brazil's topography is quite diverse. The Amazon River system carries more water to the ocean than any other river system in the world. It is navigable for its entire 2000 mile trip within Brazil. The basin is home to the most rapidly depleting rain forest in the world, losing about 52,000 square miles (20,000 square kilometers) annually. The basin, occupying more than sixty percent of the entire country, receives more than eighty inches (about 200 cm) of rain a year in some areas. Almost all of Brazil is humid as well as either has a tropical or subtropical climate. Brazil's rainy season occurs during the summer months. Eastern Brazil suffers from regular drought. There is little seismic or volcanic activity due to Brazil's position near the center of the South American Plate.

Indigenous peoples Colonial Brazil Empire of Brazil 1985-present The history of Brazil begins with the arrival of the first Native Americans , over 8,000 years ago, into the present territory of that nation. By the end of the 15th century , all parts of those lands were inhabited by semi-nomadic tribes, who subsisted on a combination of fishing, hunting, gathering, and agriculture. Brazil was discovered by Europeans on January 26 , by Vicente Y¡±ez Pinz³n , followed by Pedro lvares Cabral . The first permanent Portuguese settlement— S£o Vicente , a coastal town just south of the Tropic of Capricorn —was founded in . The Dutch also established themselves in Brazil, around the city of Recife in the northeast corner of the country, in the . The Dutch were driven out of Brazil by the Portuguese in From the to the centuries, Brazil was a colony of Portugal, exploited mainly for brazilwood at first, and later for sugarcane agriculture. During this period most Indians were exterminated, pushed out of the way or assimilated, and large numbers of

BJJ.Org is an information site for students of the martial art
of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, as developed by the Gracie family. In 1914 a Japanese Judo and jiu-jitsu master named Mitsuo Maeda (called Count Koma) came to Brazil. In return for help from the Brazilian politician Gastao Gracie, Koma taught jiu-jitsu to Gastao's son Carlos. Carlos in turn taught his brothers (most notably Helio). They went on to further refine the art via constant no-rules competition, developing what is now known as Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. More... NEW Techniques

BRIEF HISTORY OF BRAZIL
This page gives a brief and painless history of Brazil, focusing on a dozen or so people who where major players in that country's development The pre-columbian indigenous Indian population in Brazil was widely scattered and probably numbered no more than 1 million when Pedro Cabral, the Portuguese explorer, reached the coast of Brazil on April 22, 1500. The first permanent Portuguese settlement was founded at Sao Vicente, in the state of Sao Paulo (1532). Initially, development was slow, based upon a feudal system in which favored individuals received title to large blocks of land called capitanias. Because of the great demand for sugar in Europe, the first major economic cycle in Brazil was based upon the sugarcane, grown in plantations along the northeast coast. To work the fields, the early settlers used native labor, often furnished by the Bandeirantes, as the pioneers from the state of Sao Paulo were known. When the indians proved insufficient in numbers, or unable to withstand the hard labor, depending upon the story, the importation of millions of slaves from African began.
DUTCH and FRENCH INVADERS
During this period the Dutch and the French briefly settled in the Northeast and Rio de Janeiro, building forts and leaving blue-eyed brown-skinned Brazilians. Under Estacio de Sa and others the Portuguese and Brazilians expelled the invaders, who in the case of many of the Dutch from Recife and Sao Luis, moved to their new colony in a place called New Amsterdam on the island of Manhattan. That is how Brazil settled New York City.
