Gerald O'Hara proclaimed, "Land is the only thing in the world worth workin' for, worth fightin' for, worth dyin' for - because it's the only thing that lasts." When Scarlet O'Hara, in Margaret Mitchell's classic novel "Gone With the Wind," stood alone on what was left of Tara Plantation, she understood what her father saw in the land. "As God is my witness," she declared, "I'll never be hungry again." America grew up by settling the land. From Cape Cod to Cape Disappointment we worked, fought and died for land. Many of us on the land today are beneficiaries of homesteading that allowed settlers from all walks of life to claim 270 million acres of America's public domain.

Homicide Trends and Characteristics - Brazil, 19802002
Brazil is the largest and most populous country in South America (2002 population: approximately 175 million) (Brazilian Geography and Statistics Institute [BGSI], unpublished data, 2004). Although life expectancy in Brazil has increased and rates of infant mortality have decreased as a result of reductions in infectious disease mortality, homicide and other forms of injury-related mortality have increased as a proportion of overall mortality ( Figure 1 ). Since 2001, Brazilian authorities have implemented several initiatives to reduce the number of homicides, including a law that controls gun ownership and prohibits anyone other than police and members of the armed forces from carrying guns. However, homicides among adolescents and young adults remain a substantial public health problem in Brazil, and additional prevention strategies that target young persons are needed. Santar©m, Par¡
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
(Redirected from Santar©m, Brazil Santar©m is a town in the state of Par¡ in Brazil . The Tapaj³s joins the Amazon River there, and it is a popular location for tourism . It was once home to the Tapaj³s Indians , a tribe of Native Americans after which the river was named and known to have some unusual practices. It is mainly reached by boat.
The base of Santar©m's economy is agriculture, cattle and mining. The city has seen many 'cycles' of development, including rubber, coffee and gold. Most recently, there has been a huge growth is the area of soy plantations.
The population of Santar©m claims for the creation of a new state in Brasil. This state would be called Tapaj³s, and would consist of the western side of Par¡. It's capital city would be Santar©m, of course.
Santar©m is bordered by the Amazon and the Tapaj³s rivers. Both run along by many kilometers in the front of the city, side by side, without ever mixing. The Amazon's water is colder, earth-colored, while the Tapaj³s's water is somewhat warmer and has a deep-blue tone. Besides the waters This phenomenon is called "The meeting of the waters" by the locals.
Another popular place for tourism is the village of Alter do Ch£o, which is located by the Tapaj³s river, about 30 km form Santar©m. It can be reached by car (about half an hour) or by boat (one or more hours, depending on the boat).

Some Banks Saying Brazil Won't Grow More than 2.5% in 2005 Written by Newsroom Thursday, 02 June 2005 Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva addressing a business forum in São Paulo discarded adopting "populist" measures to speed up the growth of the economy, which seems to have slackened in the first quarter of 2005. "Don't expect from me any populist measures because in a year and a half we're holding elections... I want to build a strong growth foundation for this country, not only for this year", emphasized Mr. Lula da Silva.

http://www.vernonjohns.org/plcooney/brimmig.html
Brazilian Immigration Used Katheryn Gallant (http://www.brazil-brasil.com/cvrmar96.htm) and Davis. Brazil used to be a country that received immigrants from around the world. Before the 1960s, Brazil was a country that people immigrated to. In recent years, however, at least a million Brazilians have immigrated to the US, Europe and Japan. This trend may be increased by the recent Brazilian economic problems. In 1969 the Banco do Brasil opened a New York branch. In the same year he Brazilian-American chamber of Commerce was founded to promote trade and investment between the two countries. (Davis p. 10) Since April 1991, there have been no official statistics about Brazilian emigrants. We only know that the number of passports issued by the Federal Police in 1993 came to a total of 436,177. Of this number, we do not know how many decided to emigrate. We do know that the overwhelming majority of Brazilians in the United States (87 percent) were born in Brazil. The Brazilian Geography and Statistics Institute (IBGE) found a statistical "absence" of 1,379,928 Brazilians between the ages of 20 to 44 from the 1991 census (which IBGE researchers discovered while examining the census demographics). The most logical explanation is Brazilian emigration. Perhaps half of the emigrant Brazilians live in the United States. The largest Brazilian settlements are on the East Coast. New York is estimated to have between 80,000 to 150,000 Brazilian emigrants. Another 150,000 are estimated to live in Boston, 65,000 in Florida (mostly in the Miami area), 20,000 in California, 10,000 in Houston, Texas ,and another 10,000 in Washington, DC.

Brazil's GDP expanded 2,7% during the first quarter of 2004 compared to the first quarter of 2003 confirming the economic recovery tendency of the country's economy reports the Brazilian Geography and Statistics Institute, IBGE. According to IBGE, Brazil's GDP in the first quarter of 2004 reached 124,3 billion US dollars, that is 1,6% expansion over the last quarter of 2003. IBGE also points out that investment and savings in the first quarter of 2004 increased 18,7% and 23,4%. Carlos Lemos from IBGE said the latest performance data confirms the Brazilian economy has began expanding again after experiencing a 0,2% contraction in 2003, the first in eleven years. However Mr. Lemos underlined that the current level of investment 19,3% of GDP remains insufficient to ensure the Brazilian government's growth target for this year, 3,5%. In related news the Industry Confederation of Rio do Janeiro, Firjan, reported that industrial sales expanded 29,7% last May compared to a year ago and 24,9% over April. In the first five months of 2004, industrial sales accumulated an 8,95% growth, the highest since 1992 said Firjan. But workers payroll actually contracted in May 0,77% compared to the same month a year ago, and 1,9% compared to April 2004. Nevertheless Firjan's president Eugenio Gouvea Vieira argues that the industrial payroll in the first five months of this year increased 2,81% over the same period in 2003. Similarly the number of hours worked during May in Rio do Janeiro's industry increased 1,45% over April, and 3,76% over May 2003. Mr. Gouvea Vieira also warned that idle capacity in industry has dropped dramatically and is reaching a point where investments are urgently needed to keep up with the expanding demand, mainly from overseas.

John Norman Brazil accuracy, appropriate style and research Send email to this person Availability: Specialization I've worked closely with marketing departments for new product releases. I have extensive experience with translations concerning many areas of Brazilian geography and culture, including art. I'm at home with Brazilian intellectual style, and can convey the content according to rigorous literary accuracy, while keeping it readable in English. Loads of experience as a copy editor, so my texts are consistent in terms of typographical details. I have done highly satisfactory work for scientists in the fields of embryology, mycology and other life sciences. I have a practical grasp of a wide range of subjects, so I can reproduce the logical development of the text, reconstructing the same sense as in the original. Background: I am an American with a BA degree, though I've been living in São Paulo throughout the 16 years of my work as a translator. Living here has made me especially perceptive to the Brazilian nuances of words, the gist of idiomatic expressions, and the feeling conveyed by each construction. That makes me good at marketing translations, product labels (I charge by the hour for that), cultural translations (five editions up to now as copy editor for the Bienal de São Paulo), and numerous books on geography, wildlife and related topics. I also work with science and business topics. My long experience enables me to accurately assess the time needed to complete a job when I agree to the deadline, it means you will get it by that date.
