Capoeira
Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that was developed among Black slaves brought to Brazil from nations such as Angola, Congo, Buinea. During the period from the 16th to the 18th century, at least three million slaves were transported to Brazil from Southwest Africa primarily to work on the sugar plantations. The New World slave masters, anxious to keep their captives under their strict domination, imposed harsh prohibitions and restrictions on parent forms of Capoeira, often referred to a "N'golo". To insure their survival, the traditional forms were infused with dance...

Ricardo Pessanha
In Brazil, music is everywhere. You can find it in a complex rhythmic pattern beaten out by an old man with his fingers on a cafe table; in the thundering samba that echoes down from the hills around Rio in the months prior to Carnaval; and in the bars where a guitar passes from hand to hand and everyone knows all the lyrics to all the classic Brazilian songs played late into the night. batucada (percussion jam) builds. Each amateur music-maker kicks in an interlocking rhythmic part to create a groove that would be the envy of most professional bands in other parts of the world. The singing and dancing inevitably go on for hours. Music is a passport to happiness for Brazilians, an escape from everyday frustrations and (for most) a hard and difficult material life. "There's an amazing magical, mystical quality to Brazilian music. Their music is paradise," says jazz flutist Herbie Mann. In the twentieth century more than a little of this paradise reached the outside world, and Brazil arguably had more of an impact on international popular music than any country other than the United States. It was successful abroad for as many reasons as there are types of Brazilian music. Just as the U.S. has exported a wide variety of musical genres, so too has Brazil, even though very few countries speak its national language, Portuguese.

Mission and Afro-Brazilian Cultural Reality
The author is a Roman Catholic feminist theologian who has worked with Brazilian Base Christian Communities and Afro-Brazilian religious/cultural movements. At present she is engaged in postgraduate studies at the Seminario Biblico Latino-americano in San José, Costa Rica THE BLACK SPEAKER TELLS HIS STORY: The lasso was zipping through the woods. "Run, get him. Don't let them get away". No one knew where these men had come from. They came running, grabbing everything. They were neither young nor old. They would throw the pots to the ground, overturning and piling everything up right there in the middle of the jungle, in our home. Whoever fled into the depths of the jungle was hunted like a crazy escaped animal about to tear someone to pieces. They threw the lasso at me. I couldn't take another step. I was dragged over the ground behind some animal until I lost my senses. I awoke on the seashore, amidst many others. Some I recognised, others I did not. The silence was heavy and no one could say anything. And to whom would we talk? What would we say? One by one we were thrown aboard an old, filthy ship. Without food, drink or anything. We left everything behind.

Salvador, Bahia - Cultural Icon The capital of the state of Bahia, Salvador, is an important commercial port serving eastern Brazil, and a popular tourist destination. It is a city rich in cultural traditions of Afro-Brazilians and in historical evidence of its 16th century roots as a Portuguese colony. The colorful cultural environment serves as a provocative backdrop for structured discussions about the students' cross-cultural experience.
Cerrado Biome and Resource Policy - Brasilia
Cerrado vegetation (neotropical savanna) occupies a substantial portion of Brazil, and is rapidly undergoing conversion to cultivation. The group explores cerrado habitats in their natural state and conducts independent research on cerrado ecology. For the past 20 years, he has run the Brazilian Cultural Center while teaching capoeira at the Center and at local schools and colleges. Additionally, continues to be committed to his lifelong love of music. Deraldo has been a drummer since early childhood, and has taught samba drumming since the mid 1990s. In 1998, he and his students collaborated to start a professional samba group which, from then on, entertained at regular samba parties at the Center as well as at other events throughout the region. At this time, Samba Tremeterra is larger and has extensive experience performing exhilarating shows, both alone and with local and international bands and vocalists. Currently, we do not sell the CD online. However, you can buy a copy of the CD when you visit the Brazilian Cultural Center in Cambridge or attend one of our performances elsewhere.
