study-abroad@uiowa.edu The Iowa Summer Study Abroad Program in Brazil allows students the opportunity to study Portuguese language and explore the values, ideologies and symbolic content of an area of Brazil in which practices of African origin have enriched the culture. The program will take place in city of Salvador in the state of Bahia, an area that strongly displays African influence in past and present Brazil. The African legacy in Brazil thrived in colonial times, and nowadays it remains a driving force, emerging in cultural, artistic and religious elements that can be seen throughout the country, and especially in this city. This seven-week-summer program provides undergraduate and graduate students with the opportunity to learn the language, culture, literature, and history of Brazil. It offers courses comprising beginning, intermediate, and advanced Portuguese language, and Brazilian culture and literature. It is designed to help the students immerse in the experience of learning Portuguese, or acquiring fluency in it, while experiencing the rich and varied historical and cultural landscape of Bahia.

What is it about masks that have fascinated so many cultures for thousands of years? The art of masks exists since Pharao's times, when people were believing in the power of eternity, and, for many reasons, these beliefs have held true until the present. This can be seen in many a contemporary religions rituals, such as, spiritualism, in which the masks still enjoy frequent use. Masks can have different meanings: beauty, happiness, a moment of fantasy, myth, decoration, creativity, celebration and culture. Masks have a traditional place in the celebration of carnival, which can be observed in some famous places. They are also used for eroticism or simply to have a good time out partying or disco-dancing. We offer you a collection of Brazilian and Venetian Masks as Fashion Accessories. Carnival and exclusive occasions is part of our culture and the masks belong to it.

There is optimism for inflation numbers next year and, although not outstanding, there is unquestionable economic growth. Write Comment (4 Comments) Read more...

  • You have four weeks of vacation guaranteed by law. You can sell half of it back to your boss.
  • McDonald's and other American-style franchises are more expensive and more highly regarded, as a place to go for a quick meal, than the traditional neighborhood bar/eatery ( botequim
  • If you're middle class or up (about 50-70 million people), you have telephone, TV and VCR, and one or more bathrooms at your place. You don't need heating and may not have air conditioning. You're quite fastidious about neatness: yout house is very clean and you take one or (during summer) more showers a day.
