Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. by Robert Stam. Durham and London: Duke University Press, 1997. Pp. xvi + 409. $59.95, cloth; $19.95, paper. Robert Stam's Tropical Multiculturalism: A Comparative History of Race in Brazilian Cinema and Culture courageously addresses a number of topics as vast and complex as Brazil and the United States, the two countries whose cultural and historical formation he contrasts: not only does he propose to retell Brazilian film history from its racial perspective, but also to present a broader history of the country itself; to compare racial formations in Brazil and the United States; and to discuss the issue of racialized representations (22). This ambitious and persuasive book offers an intelligent critique of multicultural representation grounded on solid, firsthand knowledge of Brazilian cinema and reality.

2005 ASU Summer Program in Brazil
The cablecar on Sugarloaf mountain The 2005 Summer Program will spend six weeks in Rio de Janeiro, a city that needs no introduction. Few places on the planet have been as blessed by nature as Rio, with white beaches and blue skies, surrounded by mountains and forests mirrored in an emerald green ocean. Rio de Janeiro, one of the most beautiful cities in the world, fully justifies its title of "Marvelous City" (Cidade Maravilhosa). Rio is a city where past and present, nature and culture, both combine and collide. The program is open to all prospective students interested in Brazil and the Portuguese language. The program will last from May 23 to July 1, 2005. The following courses will be offered:
POR 101 Elementary Portuguese (5)
POR 201 Intermediate Portuguese (5)
POR 313 Portuguese Composition / Conversation (3)
POR 394 Brazilian Culture (1-6 credits) The rhythm and vitality of the people of Rio, called Cariocas , is as famous as the music, lifestyle, architecture and scenery. Program participants will visit historic sites, artistic events, natural attractions and museums. A field trip to visit the internationally known resort of Buzios is planned. Classes in the Portuguese language are supplemented by additional lectures given by Brazilian specialists on a variety of subjects. Students will live in the historic Santa Tereza district, located on Rio's South Side near the center. Santa Tereza spreads out over different hills, some with a seaside view, others overlooking Rio's Center or North Side or looking up to the majestic Cristo Redentor statue on Corcovado. Santa Tereza is minutes away from near downtown, the subway station and the internationally famous beaches such as Flamengo, Botafogo, Copacabana and Ipanema. If you want the chance to experience the best of Carioca culture, then you'll love Santa Tereza, which brings together lots of history, fascinating arquitecture, an intense cultural scene and bars and restaurants second to none. Room and board will be provided with local families, so that students can sense the receptiveness and customs of the Brazilian people. This includes basic meals and local transportation.

Carnaval's in Town: Long Distance Love Affair The connection between Africa, Latin America and Brazil is explored in month-long program By Jesse 'Chuy' Varela EVER SINCE Carmen Miranda sang and danced samba in MGM musicals in the 1940s, Brazilian culture has infiltrated the U.S. pop mainstream. From '60s bossa nova and Black Orpheus to young stars like Bebel Gilberto and Canadian pop singer Nelly Furtadowho represents her Portuguese roots with flying capoeira dancers on her MTV videosa rich cultural continuum has surged from south to north. Now a piece of Brazilian culture is coming to the Silicon Valley on the occasion of Black History Month to create a "cultural connection" between the black and Latino communities in and around San Jose. The African Spirit in Latin America is a month-long series of events and exhibits that kicks off Friday (Feb. 1), with a pre-Carnaval offering called Ritmo Do BrasilThe Rhythm of Brazil. "A few years ago I met Leon Beechman," remembers Laura Esparza, newly returned program director at the Mexican Heritage Plaza. "We started talking about life and came up with the idea that we should bring our communities together on the occasion of Black History Month to celebrate our commonalties. Obviously, we found that Brazil, which has the largest population of African descent in both North and South America, was a cultural connection that could be made by both Latinos and Africans here in the Bay Area."

A Message from Our Club Advisor: Dear members of The Brazilian Culture Club,
As everybody may know by now, Josie has decided to continue her studies in Ohio and she leaves by the end of this month.
As the club advisor and in the name of the officers and members,I would like to thank her very much for all she did during the period she was the head of our club. Josie is an expert with web sites, and she came up with one for us which enabled us to communicate with each other on a daily basis. She also organized the paperwork of the club and prepared a binder which tells everything about the club day-to-day life. Her initiatives surprised us many times, and her love for everything that is related to Brazil was the heart of our club, never stopping to beat. Now that she is leaving us, all we have to do is THANK her for her enthusiasm, competence, love for Brazil and the Portuguese language, and great interest in keeping the club going.
Josie, words are not enough to describe what you meant to our club. We are sure you will be very successful in your new venture and we wish you all the best.

Literature on the Periphery of Capitalism: Brazilian Theory, Canadian Culture Imre Szeman Empire and culture have to be on the globalization agenda, especially in a white invader-setter colony like Canada where... culture is supposed still by too many to be something imported for consumption as an additive to, or sedative for, economic servitude. — Len Findlay, "Content Providers!" The age of globalization is the age of universal contagion. — Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri, Empire Postcolonial Solidarities criticism Yet even though this attention to difference (to the difference of differences) has formed the dominant vision of the project of postcolonial studies, it is still only one version of the postcolonial, underwritten by its own (largely unacknowledged) grand theories concerning the nature of subjectivity and agency that express the common-sense of the Western's academy understanding of the connection between individual volition and the possibility of politics per se . While it has been supremely attentive to difference, postcolonial studies has often been hazy about continuities and structural similarities of the kind that comparative analyses probe and attempt to highlight. Jameson might have been wrong about the specifics of his analyses of third-world texts, but the attempt to relate the postcolonial situation to material circumstances that are necessarily global (i.e., imperial capitalism) seems theoretically unimpeachable and more necessary now than ever.
