  • Name: Branch Davidians The Branch Davidians were earlier known as The Shepherds Rod, the Branch Seventh-Day Adventist or Branch SDA's.
  • Founder: Victor Tasho Houteff
  • Date of Birth: March 2, 1885
  • Birth Place: Raikovo, Bulgaria
  • Year Founded:
  • Brief History Victor Houteff first heard the teachings of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in 1918 at a revival meeting. He soon became an active and committed member. In 1929, he publicly announced his personal interpretation of the Bible which pivots on Micah 6:9 and the phrase "Hear ye the rod." Houteff believed Seventh-Day Adventist doctrines and teachings were inacurate and he called for reform. The church isolated Houteff and his followers with the result that Houteff broke from SDA and founded The Shepherd's Rod. Houteff saw himself as a divine messenger sent by God to reveal the secret information in the scroll mentioned in the Book of Revelation, Chapter 5. The scroll is protected by seven seals and within it reveals the events which are to occur prior to Christ's return and how the world will end. In addition, Houteff believed his task was to assembly a group of 144,000 Christians, as symbolized in the Book of Revelation 7:4. The group would travel to Palestine where they would establish the Davidic kingdom, which would lead to the second coming of Christ and the downfall of Babylon (i.e. the end of the world). Houteff compiled his beliefs in his book "The Shepherd's Rod."

    Investigation Clears Agents At Waco
    Washington Post, July 22, 2000
By Susan Schmidt An independent investigation of the 1993 government raid on the Branch Davidian compound near Waco, Tex., has exonerated federal agents there and officials in Washington in the events that killed 75 cult members, some of them children, former senator John C. Danforth announced yesterday. Danforth, the special counsel named by Attorney General Janet Reno to review the government's assault, found that federal agents did not fire a single shot at members of the heavily armed religious cult or start the deadly fire that engulfed their compound. Nor was there any "massive cover-up" by the government, Danforth said, but several federal lawyers and an FBI agent did fail to reveal that four hours before the compound caught fire, potentially incendiary tear gas rounds were fired, landing harmlessly 75 feet from the living quarters. "It was important to answer these dark questions for the American people," Danforth said at a St. Louis news conference where he released his report. "I give you these conclusions with 100 percent certainty." "The responsibility for the tragedy rests with certain of the Branch Davidians and their leader, David Koresh," Danforth said, adding: "This is not a close call."

What Happened at Waco by Linda Thompson Most of you have seen our earlier accounts of Waco while the Branch Davidians were under seige and know from the TV news what the conditions were there. The news media was kept 3 miles from the Mt. Carmel Center by armed guards at all roads into the compound. And the media dutifully regurgitated whatever tripe the FBI fed them each day at 10:30, calling it "news" as they slandered the Branch Davidians, spreading lies of "child molesting", "planned mass suicide", and "religious whackos in Waco." No matter, sensationalism sells newspapers, doesn't it? It gets those network ratings up, too. It wouldn't be a story if they told the truth. The FCC might shut down a network or two or yank a permit. Better that 100 people should die in an inferno than expose the depths of the depravity of the leaders of this country. Well, the FBI lied and so have the major media throughout this entire ordeal. Here's the real story: In 1992, Sheri Jewel and her ex-husband were in a custody battle over their daughter, Keri. Sheri was a Branch Davidian and she was killed in the fire Monday.

"Branch Davidian Questions Await Reno in Waco"
by Matt Pyeatt ("CNS News," September 11, 2001)
Florida gubernatorial candidate Janet Reno is expected todiscuss one of the most agonizing events of her tenure as U.S. attorney general, in a speech to students and citizens in Waco, Tex., on Thursday.
At a Baylor University president's forum, Reno is expected to reflect on the Branch Davidian standoff and the April 1993 government assault on the compound near Waco.
Reno, advised in April 1993 that the situation inside the compound was deteriorating, ordered federal agents to storm the Branch Davidian complex, which resulted in the flimsy buildings catching fire. More than 80 cult members, many of them children, died in the flames.
At the time, Reno accepted full responsibility for what happened, and years later, she continued to insist that she tried to do the right thing. "In a way, I'll never know what the right thing to do was," she commented last year. "But people have to live with their judgments," she added.
Many people judged Reno harshly for making a decision that had deadly consequences and "police state" overtones.

"Waco brought to life in game"
by Jeff Douglas (AP, July 05, 2004)
"Waco Resurrection" is a video game. But video game makers say "subjective documentary" best describes their 3-D version of the 1993 tragedy that killed more than 70 people near Waco, Texas.
And when the burning religious compound and cult leader David Koresh glows across the wall of the Grand Arts gallery here, it's considered contemporary art.
What's also clear is that video games creators are taking advantage of rapidly evolving technology that allows them to mimic reality with increasingly vivid detail.
Game experts say Persian Gulf War-based games have been best sellers since the war ended more than a decade ago. Last year, a classroom project at the University of California-San Diego called "9-11 Survivor" gave a brief game-like tour of terrorism, letting online players jump or escape from the World Trade Center.
But never have commercial video games let players use their joystick to experience specific events clipped from the headlines. For now, art houses and Internet sites appear to be a back door to these sorts of games.
More than 300 people attended "Waco Resurrection's" Midwest debut at the "Join Us" exhibit, which runs through July 24. Since last fall, the game has been on display in San Francisco, New York, Australia and the Netherlands.

by Jim Witten The recent tragic events outside Waco, Texas, have caused a flurry of media attention. Parallels with Jim Jones' Peoples Temple and the deaths of 913 souls, mostly by suicide, have been easy to make, especially as reports have come out that many of the Branch Davidians who died in the final conflagration at "Ranch Apocalypse" actually died of gunshot wounds rather than the fire. Among these was cult leader David Koresh himself. The public marvels on the edge of unbelief as to how a group of people could be brought to this disastrous state. Fear is born out of the knowledge that this group had a massive arsenal of powerful weapons, many of which had been rendered automatic and thus illegal for possession by private individuals. The initial raid on the compound by agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms demonstrated the readiness of the cult members to use their weapons to their full and violent potential, and the likelihood that they would do so again. Sadness and grief come out of the resulting loss of life on both sides, and most especially the lives of so many innocent children. This tragedy has alarmed the community of Waco and has unsettled our nation much as the horror of Jonestown did 15 years ago. Questions begin to be raised as to whether or not a group similar to this may exist in "our" community.
