About This Page
This web page has been online continuously since January 23, 1996. In that regard, it's a piece of Internet history. Back in the olden days, Yahoo was only beginning to roll and Google was yet to be developed. It took some time to find and compile this page back then. I am no longer adding additional links though if I am informed , I will eventually update URLs for pages cited here. An acoustic neuroma is also called a vestibular schwannoma, because it affects the cranial nerve that controls hearing and the vestibular or balance system. I have compiled this list of resources related to Acoustic Neuromas (ANs) and their treatment, since my dad had surgery for an Acoustic Neuroma in 1995. I hope that folks looking for information or themselves, a friend, or a loved one will be able to find what they need here. Most people use this page to begin to find information to help them deal with an initial diagnosis. I have become aware that the effects of surgery can vary from person to person. There are some common problems following surgery and they can be quite upsetting to the unprepared. But remind yourself that this surgery was not even possible with any great success until the last half of this century! This is a benign tumor which you can survive.

General Discussion Pelizaeus-Merzbacher brain sclerosis is a rare inherited disorder affecting the central nervous system that is associated with abnormalities of the white matter of the brain. Symptoms develop due to lack of the fatty covering of nerve cells (myelin sheath). Many areas of the central nervous system may be affected, including the deep portions of the cerebrum (subcortical), cerebellum, and/or brain stem. Symptoms may include the impaired ability to coordinate movement (ataxia), involuntary muscle spasms (spasticity) that result in slow, stiff movements of the legs, delays in reaching developmental milestones, loss of motor abilities, and the progressive deterioration of intellectual function. The symptoms of Pelizaeus-Merzbacher brain sclerosis are usually slowly progressive.

I was always puzzled by the fact that people have a great deal of trouble and pain when and if they are forced or feel forced to change a belief or circumstance which they hold dear. I found what I believe is the answer when I read that a Canadian neurosurgeon discovered some truths about the human mind which revealed the intensity of this problem. He conducted some experiments which proved that when a person is forced to change a basic belief or viewpoint, the brain undergoes a series of nervous sensations equivalent to the most agonizing torture. Sidney Madwed I have assembled this list of links because of my wife's interest in Neurology by virtue of her work as a Speech Language Pathologist. We are not doctors and thus cannot offer any form of medical assistance or advice in the field of Neurology. Please consult your physician if you require professional care. Brain Briefings
Monthly newsletter from the Society for Neuroscience reporting on clinical brain research. An article on brain injury looks at how a minor sporting accident can cause the brain to reduce it's metabolic activity to that of a coma patient, while other editions look at brain mechanisms such as biological clocks, the effect of child abuse on the brain, and the effects of gender, drugs, eating, emotion, and exercise on brain function. Technological developments such as brain imaging and transcranial magnetic stimulation are also covered.
