LONDON The IOC released a hefty report Monday assessing the 28 sports hoping to stay in the Olympics and the five trying to get in, though the organization made no recommendations for adding or dropping any sport. The 265-page review by the International Olympic Committee's program commission lists facts and figures across a range of 33 criteria. The report is designed to serve as a guide for IOC members when they vote on the sports program in Singapore next month. Each of the 28 sports contested in Athens last summer will be put to a vote; any sport failing to get a majority will be dropped for the 2012 Olympics.

Star-Bulletin It finally can be said. Brian Viloria has made his breakthrough, and is on his way to becoming the first Olympic boxer from this state since 1956. In fact, if the Olympic final in the light flyweight or flyweight divisions were held tomorrow in Sydney, Viloria would be the gold medal favorite. The 18-year-old Waipahu High product laid claim to that distinction with a startling performance Thursday in Houston at the World Amateur Boxing Championships. He used a relentlessly aggressive strategy to overwhelm 1996 Olympic flyweight gold medalist Maikro Romero of Cuba in the light flyweight final. Romero, who had moved down from his Olympic weight class, was also the Goodwill Games gold medalist and the defending amateur world champion. He had eight years and a three-inch height advantage over the 5-foot-4 Viloria. "Brian is the best I've ever seen from Hawaii," said Eiichi Jumawan, a former two-time AAU champion.

2002: THE YEAR IN REVIEW The sports world: boxing, Olympics, etc. The 19th Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah, were largely a disappointment for the world of Ukrainian sports in 2002. The Ukrainian delegation, which had some strong medal hopefuls and a handful of outside shots at medals, walked away from Salt Lake empty-handed. However, the performance of world champion boxers Vitalii and Volodymyr Klitschko made worldwide news and introduced much of the boxing world to the tall, sleek and intelligent Ukrainian boxing duo which, at the close of the year, seemed poised to prove themselves as the best in the sport. Most recently, Volodymyr Klitschko defeated American Jameel McCline with a 10th round knockout on December 7 in Las Vegas to successfully defend his WBO world championship title. Klitschko won nine of 10 rounds on two scorecards and eight on the third, but was fighting cautiously throughout the bout. Since the younger Klitschko had boxed in Germany for most of his career, the fight was seen as Volodymyr's first big challenge in the United States. The 26-year-old Volodymyr also defended his title on June 29 against Ray Mercer, winning by technical knockout (TKO) with 1 minute, 8 seconds left in the sixth round. Mercer, whose record was 30-4-1 with 22 knockouts, was bloodied and humbled. In defeating Mercer by TKO, Klitschko (whose record before this bout was 38-1 with 35 knockouts) did what no other fighter in the world had ever done.

British teen loses to veteran Cuban
August 30, 2004 ATHENS The sensation of the Olympic boxing tournament learned yesterday that there's no substitute for experience. At least not in the ring. ADVERTISEMENT Great Britain's 17-year-old lightweight Amir Khan had reached the gold medal round with a lethal combination of speed and the unflappable insouciance of youth, but there he found waiting for him one of the oldest fighters at these Olympic Games, 33-year-old defending gold medalist Mario Cesar Kindelan of Cuba. Kindelan had more losses (22) in his lengthy and decorated amateur career than Khan had senior division fights (14) and that difference in experience became Khan's undoing. Khan's speed and enthusiasm won him the opening round but Kindelan, winner of 308 international fights in a career in which he had never lost a major international tournament, used his ring generalship and command of his craft to figure out how best to attack him. One round later the score was 14-9 Kindelan and soon it would swell to a comfortable 30-22 victory. Kindelan's career may have ended with a win, but Khan's showing may have signaled the dawning of a new day in a weight division long dominated by Cubans. "He told me, `You stick around you'll be the next gold medalist,' " Khan said. "I'm just happy to get to the final. I got so many years to fight as an amateur. I learned a lot from these Olympics."

He finishes strong, provides US gold
August 30, 2004 ATHENS Andre Ward never understood why he should settle for less than what he wanted, so he didn't. ADVERTISEMENT Ward heard all the critics who insisted there was no chance for an American boxer to win a gold medal in Athens but he did not believe them. He read all the stories that said this might be the worst team since the 1948 one that left London with only one silver medal but he rejected their analysis. He listened in shock when former national team director Emanual Steward insisted there was little talent on this year's Olympic boxing team, but he refused to accept even Steward's professional opinion. Then yesterday, at Peristeri Boxing Hall, Ward showed them all what a little faith and a lot of fist can do. Faith in a God he fervently believed "preordained all this before I was born" and faith in the flying fists he'd been given. Faith enough to turn a tight fight with Belarus's Magomed Aripgadjiev after two rounds into a gold medal performance and a reaffirmation that all things are possible if you believe and back it up with a work ethic. "The right guy won," USA Boxing technical advisor Al Mitchell said. "If a lot of our other guys were mature like him, they could have been here, too. Everyone wants a piece of these kids but Andre Ward went away from all that."

    98. BOXING - HISTORY
At the 23rd olympic Games (668 AD) boxing officially becomes an olympic sport . Boys boxing is added to the olympic Programme at the 41st olympic Games
    http://www.sportsnet.gr/7/70x/70x1/e70x11.html
History of the sport The Ancient Greeks sports are divided into two categories the "heavy" ones (VAREA:wrestling, boxing, pangration and discus throw) and the "KOUFA" ones (all the others). The origins of boxing (in Greek Pygmahia: pyg + mahi = fist fight) are to be found in the pressing need for pre-historic man to ensure his own survival and procure food. Thousands of years pass before this first form of boxing develops into a new concept, an ideal in fact, which thanks to Greek culture is transformed into a peaceful sport, as evinced by the fact that at the end of the match the opponents become friends again. In mythology, boxing has a divine origin. Apollo is considered its creator. He also killed Forvanta, prince and an excellent boxer, in a fight, because he had the overweening arrogance to face and fight the God. At the time a boxer's basic qualities are deemed to be good physical form, fighting spirit and faith in eventual victory. The advice which follows, given by the philosopher Nikandros, teacher of Filinos of Kos (five times Olympic champion) on the occasion of his participation in the last Olympic Games in ancient Olympia, are typical: "You should know well, Filine my son, that in unyielding Olympia a strong body is not enough if it is not accompanied by a sound and mature mind. Exercise develops the body, music develops the soul and knowledge develops the mind. Only thus can beauty be created. A beautiful soul and mind are not the sole attributes of man ". At the 23rd Olympic Games (668 AD) boxing officially becomes an Olympic sport. Onomastos of Smyrna is the first Olympic champion. He puts forward a set of rules for boxing to the Ileiads (HLEIOUS), and these are accepted. "Boxing was added and Onomastos of Smyrna won and set the rules for boxing". Boys' boxing is added to the Olympic Programme at the 41st Olympic Games (616 AD). The first junior Olympic champion is Filytas or Filotas from Sivari, Sicily "Boys' boxing was added and Filotas of Sivary won".

SYDNEY, Australia A senior amateur boxing official was quoted on Monday as saying he feared for the sport's Olympic future after the Sydney Games. "I know it has been said many times by some of my executive members that boxing will go off the Games after Sydney," Arthur Tunstall, an International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) vice-president, told The Australian newspaper. Tunstall, an outspoken and sometimes controversial figure who was president of the Australian Boxing Union for 38 years to 1999, said the future of Olympic boxing may depend on the successor to IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch. "A new IOC president could look at boxing being a controversial sport and put a proposal to his executive that boxing goes off," said Tunstall, who also serves as the Oceania Amateur Boxing Association president. "That is something we have to wait and see what happens and make sure the Sydney boxing program doesn't have any problems. I know there are a few people on the IOC that are not favorable to boxing." Samaranch is presiding over his last Olympics in Sydney and a successor is due to be elected next year.
