SUPPORT USA BOXING Unlike many Olympic sports being contested at the Olympic Games, the sweet science of amateur boxing provides more than simply a competitive opportunity and Olympic dream for the over 24,000 athlete members of USA Boxing. For so many of its athletes, boxing provides an escape from the streets of the inner cities, a future of selling drugs, serving time in prison or often times a fate even worse. For these kids and young adults whose future appears bleak, the sport provides an opportunity to excel and develop discipline, focus, determination and an iron will to succeed. Many of the young amateur boxers attempting to accomplish their Olympic dreams have already overcome obstacles and hardships which many people cannot even fathom; despite this, they have emerged strong and proud from their trials and tribulations.
The sport of amateur boxing has given them great hope where little existed, a path to follow, and in many fortunate cases, a hand to guide them toward a future they didn't know existed.
For these young athletes, boxing is a lifeline to the future that they have worked for, dreamed about and are so close to finding. Boxing has forever changed their lives, built their character and strengthened their resolve. They are much more than talented athletes. They are outstanding men and women and role models for the young people who hope to one day follow in their footsteps.

It felt like Olympic boxing mattered. Like it has a future. Andre Dirrell, a baby-faced bolt of charisma and electricity from Flint, Mich., snapped a jab into the face of his Algerian opponent. And then, flashing blistering hand speed, Dirrell stepped in with a flurry of lefts and rights that looked like something out of Sugar Ray Leonard's bag of tricks. "I knew I was the better boxer today," said Dirrell, who advanced when the referee stopped Saturday's fight before the third round. "I took a chance. The punches just started adding up."

The Olympic Games:
Summer 2004 in Athens, Greece

Athens, Greece, will host the 2004 Summer Olympics. For information on Greece, click here . For a page on Greece's flag, click here The Games of the XXVIII Olympiad are being held in Athens, Greece. The opening ceremonies are on August 13, 2004. The closing ceremonies are on Sunday, August 29, 2004. The Ancient Olympics The ancient Greeks dedicated the Olympic Games to the god Zeus. The original games were held on the plain of Olympia in Peloponnesos, Greece. The Greeks held the first Olympic games in the year 776 BC (over 2700 years ago), and had only one event, a sprint (a short run that was called the "stade"). The race was run by men who competed in the nude. A wreath of olive branches was placed on the winner's head (in Greek, this is called a kotinos). The olive tree was the sacred tree of Athens, Greece. Women were neither allowed to compete in the games nor to watch them, because the games were dedicated to Zeus and were therefore meant for men.

Some Modern Olympic Firsts The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece. A total of 312 athletes from 13 nations participated in nine sports. Women competed in the Olympic Games for the first time. For the first time, medals were awarded to the first three people to finish each event The Olympic flag was raised for the first time, and the Olympic oath was introduced. The five interlaced rings of the flag represent: Africa, America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. The first Winter Olympics, featuring skiing and skating events, were held. The Olympic flame was introduced at the Olympic Games. A relay of runners carries a torch with the flame from Olympia, Greece, to the site of each Olympics. Starting with the 1994 Winter Olympics, the winter and summer Games have been held two years apart, instead of in the same year.

Canadian boxing team KO'd?
By Steve Buffery

The Canadian Olympic Committee is supposed to be about helping and nurturing this country's top athletes. But with five months to go before the Athens Olympics, the COC has totally demoralized and destroyed the Canadian Amateur Boxing Association and the national team. Because of the COC's inflexibility, CABA is facing the prospect of sending its smallest team to the Olympics in decades. Two fighters have qualified for Athens: Andrew Kooner at 54 kilograms and Adam Trupish at 69 kg.

The gold medal was the United States' first in Olympic boxing since 1996. "It definitely lifted the spirits a little bit," Ward said. "I hope that in 2008, we start to be respected again like we used to be in '76, '88 and '84." With Ward's gold and middleweight Andre Dirrell's bronze, the United States finished sixth in the boxing team standings. That's a drop of two medals and one slot from what was considered a disappointing performance in Sydney. Cuba again led in golds with five and medals with eight.

Is Math a Sport?

And what about target shooting, Skee-Ball, and standing on one foot?
By Jordan Ellenberg
Posted Thursday, July 15, 2004, at 2:20 PM PT
Last week, the first contingent of U.S. Olympians arrived in Athens. The five men and one woman, survivors of a merciless selection process, stood ready to test themselves against the strongest competitors in the world. Sunday, they go home. Their competition, the International Mathematical Olympiad , is already over. The math Olympiad may not attract a worldwide broadcast audience or demand traffic-jamming last-minute infrastructure fixes like the Olympic Games per se. But it's a contest as rigorous and rarefied as anything you'll see on NBC this August. Could mathletes someday compete alongside track stars and basketball players under the aegis of the five rings? History
The first "Olympic" boxing tournament was held in conjunction with the 1904 Games at St. Louis. However, it took place well after athletes from Europe had gone home and, although it was theoretically open to amateurs from any country, only U. S. boxers competed. As a result, there's a great deal of doubt whether the winners should be considered true Olympic champions. Boxing was an official Olympic event in 1908. After skipping 1912, the sport has been on every Olympic program since 1920. Since 1936, the International Amateur Boxing Association has awarded the Val Barker Cup to the Olympic boxer displaying the best style and technique. Bal Barker was the first general-secretary of the association. Competitors take part in a single-elimination tournament with no seeding. Through 1948, the boxers who lost in the semi-final were matched in a fight for the bronze medal. Since 1952, bronze medals have been awarded to both semi-final losers. There are five judges for an Olympic bout. Through 1988, a majority vote of the judges determined the outcome. A computerized scoring system was adopted in 1992. Under that system, a judge is supposed to press a button to record each punch landed by a fighter and, if three of the five judges agree, that fighter is awarded a point. If the fight ends in a tie, the high and low scores are dropped and the scores of the three remaining judges are added.

More about AIS boxing Today's elite boxers are exceptional athletes. They must not only be strong and in excellent physical condition, they also need to be quick, skilful and determined. The modern sport relies heavily on new technology and science to provide specialised training and athlete evaluation. Boxing scholarship holders at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) have access not only to Olympic-standard strength and training facilities, but to a group of world-leading sports science and sports medicine practitioners. About AIS Boxing The AIS Boxing program was an Olympic Athlete Program (OAP) initiative. International coach Bodo Andreass was appointed national head coach in 1997, based at the AIS in Canberra. Initially he worked around the country with Australia's leading amateur boxers and coaches and conducted national team camps at the AIS. Scholarships are now offered to high performance boxers considered by Boxing Australia to achieve success at the international level. Today, the AIS Boxing program is a combination of a centralised, residential program for athletes based in Canberra supplemented by a camps program for those boxers selected by Boxing Australia to be included in a national squad.

In both amateur and professional versions, the fighters wear padded gloves, attacking only with the front of the fist. In professional boxing each round usually lasts for three minutes and there may be 4-12 rounds in a bout. Origins
Fighting with the fists for sport and spectacle is probably as old as sport itself. Boxing contests are found throughout antiquity. Greek boxers would wear boxing gloves (not padded) and wrappings on their arms below the elbows, but were otherwise naked when competing. There is evidence to suggest that boxing was prevalent in North Africa during 4000 BC. First accepted as an Olympic sport (the ancient Greeks called it Pygmachia) in 688 BC, participants in the ancient games trained on punching bags (called a korykos). Keeping their fingers free, boxers then wore leather straps (called himantes) on their hands, wrists, and sometimes lower arms, to protect them from injury.
