Boxers fought without rounds until one man was knocked out, or admitted he had been beaten. Unlike the modern sport, there was no rule against hitting an opponent when he was down. There were no weight classes within the mens' and boys' divisions; opponents for a match were chosen randomly.

What makes some sports Olympic? It all goes back to tradition. The ancient roots
Ask Encarta and you'll learn that the Olympic Games are a revival of an ancient Greek festival that started in 776 BC. Those games differed a bit from ours. There were fewer events, many of which mimicked what you'd do in battle if you were an ancient Greek. For example: In a battle you might...

the Modern Olympic Boxing
In 1904 was boxing for the first time at the program, all titles went to the USA. The very first winner (Samuel Berger), went immediately proffesional.
Changes?
In the time that boxing was at the program, were there many changes in the weightclasses, and many classes have been added. Since 1952 get the losing semi-finalists a bronze medal.
Decisions and disqualifications
In 1924 were the officials according to the European rules outside the ring, whereby the following of the instructions became impossible and the officials weren't impartially.
By the qualifiers in 1924, was a match between a not so strong Frenchman and the title-defender Harry Mallin (GB). The Frenchman commited contraventions and at the end had the Brittish man the teeth of the Frenchman in his chest. But the Frenchman became the winner. After a protest of the Englishmen with the menace that all the English-speaking countries would retire, the decision was undid.
In 1908 had the silver medalwinner reasons to complain, the official was the father of the gold medalwinner!

Greek Sports We have already seen that the ancient Greeks were very good artists and actors. However, this is not all that they did well. Keep reading to find out about sports and athletes in ancient Greece. What role did sports play in ancient Greece? The ancient Greeks were huge sports fans. Every four years, the Olympic Games were held in the staduim at Olympia. The best athletes in Greece competed in different events that were a part of religious life. The games began with a sacrifice to the god Zeus . Because the games were religious, anyone who was caught cheating during the games was never allowed to compete again because cheating was considered disrespectful to the gods. photo courtesy of Michael Bennett What types of sports could I have played? Many of the games played in the Olympic Games of ancient Greece are still included in the Olympics of today. Three of these games are boxing, weightlifting , and the pentathalon. Boxing was much the same in ancient Greece as it is today. Boxers padded their hands in cloth and fought until one of them was knocked out. The pentathalon was made up of five different events: discus throwing , javelin throwing, wrestling, running, and long jumping. All of these events are still included in the Olympics today. One event from the ancient Greek Olympics that is too dangerous to be included in the games today is chariot racing.

My Olympics
Citius Fortius Altius Revisited
With the 2004 Olympics about to begin, I have been thinking about the large number of sports that make up the Olympics. There are too many sports, and a lot of them are stupid. For example, baseball and softball are Olympic sports, and synchronised swimming is ridiculed because it is an art-form rather than a sport. So I have decided to get rid of the stupid sports from the Olympics, and I have decided that removing all sports that do not conform to the Olympic Ideals swifter, stronger, higher is a good place to start. I use these ideals as the basis of removing sports and adding new sports to my Olympic games.
Sports to Remove
Before I start removing sports from my Olympics, I can simplify the Ideals by removing higher , as it is really similar to swifter. I can now throw out all sports that do not fit the two Ieals. However, this does not leave us many sports, so I will keep all sports that can be used to kill people, so I will rewrite the Ideals to read swifter, stronger deadlier

The Sports of the Ancient Olympics
The Ancient Olympics had many sports including boxing, equestrian events, pankration, pentathlon, wrestling, and running.
Boxing, in the ancient olypics, was played without many rules. Men who competed in boxing played with no rounds. When a man was knocked down the game ended. There were no rules about hitting a downed oponnent. There were no weight classes in ancient boxing. Instead of gloves, boxers used leather thongs on their hands and wrists. This left their fingers free. These leather straps were called himantes
Equestrain events were very important to the ancient Greeks because it portrayed strength to opponents. There was a chariot race as well as riding. There was a 2-horse and 4-horse chariot race. There were chariots carried by full grown horses, as well as foals. There was a race including chariots led by mules. The course on which these races were carried out was twelve laps around the stadium track, or about 9 miles.
Riding, however, was carried out on a course that was 6 laps around the stadium, or about 4.5 miles. There were races with foals and horses and the jokeyes rode without stirrups. Only wealthy people rode in these races because they were the only people who could afford to keep a horse, and give food and board to the jockey. However, when a horse came first in a race, the owners were the ones to get the wreath of olives instead of the jockey.
Pankration, another ancient sport, was a combination of boxing and wrestling. Oponents were allowed to punch, but there were rules about biting or gouging another's anatomy. Fighters did not used the leather
