The Olympic Flag
(five colored interlocking rings on a white background) was conceived by Pierre de Coubertin. Almost a century after the flag's creation, the six colors, those of the rings (blue, yellow, black, green, red) and that of the background (white), still maintain their symbolism today.
The Olympic symbol, the five interlocking rings, represents the union of the five continents and the meeting of the athletes of the world at the Olympic Games Olympic History
The Olympic Games took their name from the Greek city of Olympia and though there were important athletic competitions held in other Greek cities in ancient times, the Olympic Games were regarded as the most prestigious.
The games were held every four years during August and September and the word "Olympiad", which referred to the four year intervals between competitions, was commonly used to measure time. The first documented Olympic champion was a man named Coroebus, a cook from Elis who won the sprint race in 776 BC. Historians believe that the games had already existed for at least 500 years prior to that date. The Olympic Games originally featured only one event: a race called the "stade", equal to a distance of about 210 yards. By 728 BC two additional races had been added, comparable to the 400 meter and 1,500 meter races of the modern games. The Olympics came to include wrestling, boxing and the pentathlon, as well as specialized events for soldiers and heralds. It was only in 472 BC that the events were spread out over a period of four to five days, previously they had all taken place on a single day.

How the Olympic Games began
Nearly 3,000 years of Olympic history

The Olympics first started nearly 3,000 years ago in Ancient Greece. The ancient Greek civilization enjoyed many sports—including running, boxing and wrestling—because they believed physical activity and competition were very important. Every Greek boy was expected to participate in sports, because the Greeks believed the skills they learned in sports would make them better warriors.
In honour of Zeus
The ancient Greeks also believed religion was very important. Zeus was their greatest god. The ancient Greeks built a shrine to honour Zeus in the Valley of Olympia. Greeks gathered at the shrine to play their favourite sports as part of their religious ceremonies.
In 776 B.C. the ancient Greeks first recorded the results from their sporting events held in honour of Zeus. Every four years after that these Games were held, and because they took place in the Valley of Olympia, they became known as the Olympic Games.

ATHENS 1896
The people of Athens greeted the Games with great enthusiasm. There is no event that the Greek hosts wanted to win more than the marathon race, because of its historical significance. Spiridon Louis, a Greek shepherd set off from the city of Marathon (marathon was run from Marathon to Athens over the course covered by Greek hero Pheidippides in 490 B.C. after the battle with the Persians) and took the lead four kilometres from the finish line and, to the great joy of the 100,000 spectators, won the race by more than seven minutes.
James Connolly (USA-athletics) won the triple jump on 6 April 1896, and thus became the first Olympic champion since the Ancient Games. He also finished second in the high jump and third in the long jump. He left Harvard University to travel to Athens on a cargo ship and then by train to compete.
Alfréd Hajos (HUN-swimming) won the 100m and the 1,200m events. For the longer race, the swimmers were transported by boat and left to swim back to shore alone. According to Hajos, "I must say that I shivered at the thought of what would happen if I got a cramp from the cold water. My will to live completely overcame my desire to win".
PARIS 1900
The Games of 1900 were held in Paris as part of the Exposition Universelle Internationale - the Paris World's Fair. The exposition organizers spread the events over five months and de-emphasized their Olympic status to such an extent that many athletes died without ever knowing that they had participated in the Olympics.

Although the amateur boxing practiced at the Games is a far cry from professional bouts, its critics still believe it to be brutal, barbaric and unacceptably dangerous. Indeed, it is difficult to reconcile with the Olympic ideal a sport in which combatants aim to physically hurt one another. That aside, the sport has also produced some of the great names in Olympic history. The most famous of them is without doubt Cassius Clay.

Potted History Some early history about women and the Olympics
  • Married women were barred from the Ancient Olympic Games, but prostitutes or virgins were allowed to spectate. Kallipateria was the first female Olympic boxing coach in 440 BC. The first female Olympic champion was a Spartan princess called Kynisca, in 392 BC. She was also the first woman to become a champion horse trainer when her horses and chariot competed and won in the Ancient Olympic Games. Women had their own athletic games of Hera from about 1000 BC. Women were originally the prizes in mens Ancient Olympic chariot races. Ballooning, croquet and golf (1900) were once Olympic events in which women competed. Please see Statistics for more information. 1900 was the year the World Exhibition was scheduled to take place in Paris, with celebrations and events akin to our own Millennium celebrations. The Olympic Games were taking place at the same time, from 14th May to 28th October and were considered by many to be part of the World Exhibition. Some of the competitors did not know if they were in the Olympic Games or the World Fair. Happily for the women athletes of the time, the all male International Olympic Committee, who were very against women taking parts in sports, had little influence in Paris.
The organisers of the World Exhibition seemed unconcerned about the rights and wrongs of women competing, so their presence was not an issue. To this day there is still confusion as to which events were Olympic and which were World Fair events. So, who were the first female Olympic competitors and champion? For a sport to be Olympic in 1900 it had to be an open sport, amateur and international, not handicapped and not motorised. The long-held view was that women took part in just

The Olympic Games were celebrated 320 times every four years in the sacred stadium at Olympia, Greece, beginning in 776 B.C. Although the Greek poet Homer describes a two-person fight in the Iliad, it is not certain that such bouts took place as early as the epic poem’s setting around 1800 bc . Inquirer News Service IT is business as usual for the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) when the country hosts the 22nd Asian Boxing Olympic Qualifying tournament on January 10-18 at the Puerto Princesa City Coliseum in Palawan province. Twenty-four slots in 11 weight categories are up for grabs in this first of three zone qualifiers for the 2004 Athens Games. "We are ready and determined to go to Athens," said tireless ABAP president Manny Lopez, stressing that the boxing association is not disheartened but keen on winning that long-sought Olympic gold medal despite the decline of amateur boxing over the past four consecutive Olympics, including that embarrassing medal shutout in the 2004 Sydney Games. "This time, we are confident that our boys will do us proud."

Ramos, 30, fighting as an Individual Olympic Athlete in the lightweight category, lasted until 1:37 into the second round of the four-round contest before going under to Ghana's Raymond Narh on points 15-0. The fight was ended by Russian referee Stanislav Kirsanov under the competition's 15-point rule. The special International Olympic Committee (IOC) ruling, only the second of its kind in Olympic history following Yugoslavia's participation at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, enabled Ramos to compete in Sydney even though East Timor does not yet fulfil criteria for formal Olympic recognition. "I expected the Ghanaian to be strong. I feel well, but I'm not happy that the fight finished in the second round," Ramos said through an interpreter.
