History
The deep roots of boxing in Greek history are demonstrated by the famous fresco of the two young boxers found in Santorini Island, dating from 1,600 B.C. In the ancient Olympic Games boxing was established as an Olympic sport at the 23rd Olympiad in 688 B.C., with the first Olympic winner being Onomastos Smyrnaios.  The 'aethloforos' (achiever of great feats) Polidefkis was also considered to be a technically skilled and multi-talented athlete. According to the legend, god Apollo was the guardian of the sport, as was indeed mentioned in a Homeric hymn: …"wherever (in Delos) the Ionians gather with their long tunics to honor you, along with their children and modest wives, with every event they organize they please you (Apollo) with boxing, joy and songs". During that same period Boxing developed considerably in ancient Greece, from Crete and Santorini down to Cyprus and throughout the Aegean region, to Athens and Sparta. Later Confucius promoted the art of Boxing in China, where schools practiced the sport in order to achieve “inner perfection”. Professional boxers first appeared in ancient Rome, where they would train in organised facilities.

AIBA looks to limit scoring controversies

SYDNEY, Australia Olympic boxing authorities say they will double the money for any judge providing evidence that he has been offered a bribe at the Sydney Games. International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) general secretary Loring Baker said on Monday there was no proof any Olympic judge had ever taken a bribe but the measure was "to let them know they don't have to." "There's been so much bad publicity and allegations of corruption that we have to go the extra step to remove even the shadow of a doubt that there are questionable judges or fixed bouts or anything of that sort," he said. "Sometimes you have to do things to prove your innocence as well as your guilt," he added. Asked specifically whether AIBA would pay up $50,000 if a judge demonstrated he had been offered $25,000, Baker confirmed this was the case. But he was confident the organization, who first made the offer at a seminar for Olympic judges in Kazakhstan in June, would end the tournament without paying out.

He will feel a warm summer breeze or hear the ocean gently wash up on the sand, and suddenly it brings him home. Even after four decades, the beauty of his homeland remains vivid. The memories are both pleasant and painful, as they send him back to places and faces he wishes to see. But he knows that some wishes aren't meant to come true.
The Great Kid Gavilan, at right, attends a Ring 8 awards ceremony in New York with Beau Jack. "I miss Cuba very much," he said. "I miss the family and friends I left behind. I miss the beaches, the beautiful people, the view of Malecon [Havana's busiest street]. I miss the Cuba of 42 years ago." Fernandez was among a few dozen professional fighters who left Cuba after Fidel Castro's rise to power. The lot included Luis Rodriguez, Benny Paret, Isaac Logart, Doug Vaillant, Sugar Ramos, Jose Legra and Jose Napoles. They represent the finest and until some recent defections - the last generation of pro boxers the island nation has produced. There had been great Cuban fighters before and a spate of great Olympic champs since, but never was boxing as saturated with Cuban talent as it was in the early to late 1960s. The legacy of those men is measured by the success they achieved in the ring, but also by the sacrifices and hardships they endured by the sudden, and permanent, separation from family, friends and the country of their birth.

In the valley at Olympia in Elis, a short distance from the western coast of Greece, the first recorded Olympic Games were held. But, it is suspected that the games started 500 years earlier. So important were these contests that time was measured by the four-year interval between the Games; the term "Olympiad" describing this period. The Olympic Games were originally restricted to freeborn Greeks. The competitors, including those who came from the Greek colonies, were amateur in the sense that the only prize was a wreath or garland. In ancient times, four great games festivals were held in Greece: The Isthmians, The Nemeans, The Pythians and The Olympic Games. The Olympic Games in
honor of Olympian Zeus was by far the greatest event. Greek games were celebrated in the belief that the spirits of the departed were grateful observing such spectacles, as they did during their earthly life.

Once upon a time the Olympics was an event that started in order to honour the mythical God Zeus, the father of Greek Gods. From the beginning the Olympics was a local competition but later on more and more Greek city states participated. 293 events were organized during almost twelve centuries.
The Olympic area was a combination of temples, halls and the stadium. The Temple of Zeus was one of the Seven Wonders of the World with a 40 feet high statue in gold and ivory of the god.

The games took place every four years and were open only for freeborn Greek men. Most of the athletes came in the beginning from wealthy families because they had to pay their own expenses.

Olympic fans, ask yourself this: why did you enjoy watching Tatiana Grigorieva vault with the pole? No, besides that. Could it be the same reason you enjoyed watching Jai Taurima in the long jump? Michelle Ferris in the cycling? The little-known Justin Norris in the swimming pool? Perhaps it could. The real reason (okay, the other reason) you loved watching Grigorieva in the pole vault is that she jumped a personal best. Put aside her obvious beauty (and the way she silenced 110,000 sports fans by placing a manicured finger to bee-stung lips). Put aside the silver medal (and the email called The Silver Medallist that is doing the rounds). What, really, is the sporting point? It is that Grigorieva did better than she had ever done before. Sure, American Stacy Dragila went higher and broke a world record. Bully for her. Grigorieva was also making history. Her own history. She jumped 4.55 metres and stunned herself.

The ancient Greeks dedicated the Olympic Games to the god Zeus. The original games were held on the plain of Olympia in Peloponnesos, Greece. The Greeks held the first Olympic games in the year 776 BC (over 2700 years ago), and had only one event, a sprint (a short run that was called the "stade"). The race was run by men who competed in the nude. A wreath of olive branches was placed on the winner's head (in Greek, this is called a kotinos). The olive tree was the sacred tree of Athens, Greece. Women were neither allowed to compete in the games nor to watch them, because the games were dedicated to Zeus and were therefore meant for men.

Ancient Olympic Games The Olympic Games begun at Olympia in Greece in 776 BC. The Greek calendar was based on the Olympiad, the four-year period between games. The games were staged in the wooded valley of Olympia in Elis. Here the Greeks erected statues and built temples in a grove dedicated to Zeus, supreme among the gods. The greatest shrine was an ivory and gold statue of Zeus. Created by the sculptor Phidias, it was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Scholars have speculated that the games in 776 BC were not the first games, but rather the first games held after they were organized into festivals held every four years as a result of a peace agreement between the city-states of Elis and Pisa. The Eleans traced the founding of the Olympic games to their King Iphitos, who was told by the Delphi Oracle to plant the olive tree from which the victors' wreaths were made. According to Hippias of Elis, who compiled a list of Olympic victors c.400 BC, at first the only Olympic event was a 200-yard dash, called a stadium. This was the only event until 724 BC, when a two-stadia race was added. Two years later the 24-stadia event began, and in 708 the pentathlon was added and wrestling became part of the games. This pentathlon, a five-event match consisted of running, wrestling, leaping, throwing the discus, and hurling the javelin. In time boxing, a chariot race, and other events were included.

Olympia: Aerial view of site and surroundings The Olympic Games in Antiquity reflected ancient Greek culture. Although they are of another era, they are an inspiration for the establishment of the modern Olympic Games, a fertile ground for discussion and comparison. The Games took place in Olympia in honor of Zeus. Their origin is shrouded in legend and their foundation is thought to have been 776 BC. The Olympics were the most glorious religious and athletic event of the ancient Greek world. Renowned and prestigious, they attracted a huge number of athletes and spectators. All free Greek citizens had the right to participate (excluding women). Victory at the Games was the highest honor for an athlete. Victors enjoyed special honors from their city; and often myths were created of their exploits. During the Games, a sacred truce was agreed: all interstate hostilities were suspended. The Games long history shows no shortage of stories of violated rules, broken truces, bribed athletes, political exploitation and hostile criticism. Gradually, the link between religion and the athletic ideal waned and the Games became a professional athletic spectacle. In 393 BC the Olympic Games were abolished permanently.

Surprisingly, while the top ancient Greek weightlifters were held in high esteem and evidence exists that weightlifting competitions occurred, the sport was not included in the ancient Olympic games . The first world weightlifting competition was held in London in 1891 and won by Edward Lawrence Levy . Five years later the modern Olympics began and weightlifting was included on the as one of nine events on the program. The original Olympic weightlifting competition was based on 2 lifts, the one-handed dumbbell lift and the two-handed barbell lift. Weightlifting was dropped from the Olympics in 1900, returned in 1904 and 1906 and then was dropped again. In 1920 it reappeared and has been included in every Olympics since. 1920 also marked the first time the competitors were divided into weight classes.
