Other Resources History The first "Olympic" boxing tournament was held in conjunction with the 1904 Games at St. Louis. However, it took place well after athletes from Europe had gone home and, although it was theoretically open to amateurs from any country, only U. S. boxers competed. As a result, there's a great deal of doubt whether the winners should be considered true Olympic champions. Boxing was an official Olympic event in 1908. After skipping 1912, the sport has been on every Olympic program since 1920. Since 1936, the International Amateur Boxing Association has awarded the Val Barker Cup to the Olympic boxer displaying the best style and technique. Bal Barker was the first general-secretary of the association. Competitors take part in a single-elimination tournament with no seeding. Through 1948, the boxers who lost in the semi-final were matched in a fight for the bronze medal. Since 1952, bronze medals have been awarded to both semi-final losers. There are five judges for an Olympic bout. Through 1988, a majority vote of the judges determined the outcome. A computerized scoring system was adopted in 1992. Under that system, a judge is supposed to press a button to record each punch landed by a fighter and, if three of the five judges agree, that fighter is awarded a point. If the fight ends in a tie, the high and low scores are dropped and the scores of the three remaining judges are added.

He is 33 and his power to dictate and intimidate is noticeably shrinking but his points victory over a game Russian rival for the gold medal was comfortable enough to remind him that his real challenger these days is history. But the sport is so damaged that there's already talk this could be the last Olympics to feature the same program that produced Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard. About all it would take is one more outrageous decision, one more corrupted result, just another Roy Jones fiasco. That one continues to resonate because Jones, now regarded as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, could not sway the hometown judges in Seoul's 1988 Games and lost one of the worst-scored fights in Olympic history. But there have been so many in Olympic boxing over the years that not even a high official from its governing body can promise the sport's continuation. Said AIBA vice president Arthur Tunstall recently: "A new IOC president could look at boxing being a controversial sport and put a proposal to his executive that boxing goes off. That is something we have to wait and see what happens and make sure the Sydney boxing program doesn't have any problems."

But after the fall of the Roman Empire boxing disappeared from the record books until the 17th century. In those primitive times boxers didn't wear gloves - leather straps were tied round their hands. But they did train with simple versions of today's punch bags. During Roman times metal studs were added to the leather straps which led to the sport becoming more and more violent until it was banned. Cassius Clay became better known as the great Muhammad Ali Organised amateur boxing came about in the 19th century when the eighth Marquis of Queensberry devised a new set of rules. At the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 boxing was not included in the programme of events. The Athens organisers said it was "ungentlemanly, dangerous and practised by the dregs of society". Boxing made a comeback at the Olympic Games in 1904 and became a staple part of the programme in 1920.
