PHILLY BOXING HISTORY Home Boxers Fights Arenas ... More About Contact WHY PHILADELPHIA BOXING HISTORY? Every time I searched the Internet for the names of any of my favorite Philly fighters, I was always disappointed with the results. There was a ton of boxing information on the Web and many great sites that I visited everyday – several times a day. But there seemed to be a real lack of specific info regarding Philadelphia boxing. I was surprised by how little I could find. Really, only the Peltz Boxing site offered any real focus on the subject. For a long time, I wished for a comprehensive source for all things Philly Boxing – records, stories, memorabilia, details, photos, lists, and something that put it all into context. So, I decided to begin this site with the hope that it will become exactly that – a record of Philadelphia’s great boxing past – the characters, events, venues and legends. The site is a work in progress and has a long way to go. However, I am dedicated to developing it into something great. Then when a fan searches a name like 'Bennie Briscoe', they will find some real information about him as well as additional data on his contemporaries, his place among them, his era, his importance, and more. I want Philly Boxing History - everything that took place - to be remembered by all and I want it to be easily accessible. As a teen in the 1970’s, my brother would take me to the Spectrum fights. We saw Jeff Chandler, Matthew Saad Muhammad, Jerome Artis, Curtis Parker, Alfonso Hayman, Youngblood Williams, and many others. The first title fight I attended in person was Mike Rossman vs. Aldo Travesaro at the Spectrum in 1978. Those nights really made an impression.

Henry Louis "Hank" Aaron One of the greatest hitters of all time, Henry Louis Aaron (1934- ) made baseball history when he broke Babe Ruth's longtime record of 714 home runs. Aaron began playing sandlot baseball as an adolescent in Alabama and later played shortstop for one of the best Negro League teams, the Indianapolis Clowns. A quiet, self-assured superstar and unshakably consistent player, Aaron eked out his record, run-by-run, throughout his career with the Milwaukee and Atlanta Braves. When his scores threatened to obliterate Ruth's record, Aaron endured racial abuse and heated media attention. He maintained absolute composure under the tremendous pressure and steadily closed the gap for a major statistical triumph. When he retired from baseball in 1976, he had 755 home runs to his name. Ernie Banks With the addition of Ernest Banks (1931- ) to the roster of the Chicago Cubs in 1953, this cornerstone franchise ended its long policy of segregation. A U.S. Army veteran, Banks was discovered by major league scouts shortly after completing his military service. He proved himself to be an invaluable team member with strong fielding and superlative hitting skills. Between 1955 and 1960, the amiable "Mr Cub" hit more home runs than any other player in the major leagues and became the first man to win back-to-back Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards. With 512 career home runs, Banks is one of the top home run hitters in the history of the National League. By the end of his 19-year career, he was voted "The Greatest Cub Ever" by adoring fans.

Golden Moments
Man at the mic: Ring announcer Hank Kropinski introduces the fighters. photo: Jessica Gryphon Ring announcer Hank Kropinski has seen it all during his 25 years at the Golden Gloves.
by Sono Motoyama The arena is silent now, the ring in the middle of the floor empty. Eight lamps positioned directly above the ring glare down at the mat and the blue and yellow vinyl-covered ropes; a ninth lamp is burned out. But soon the folding chairs on the floor and the wooden seats on the second tier of the Blue Horizon, the former mansion in North Philadelphia that seems to always have the word "legendary" appended to its name, will be filled with boisterous spectators. At the end of each bout, judges hand a slip of paper with their decision to the ref, who delivers it to Kropinski, seated at a long table ringside. At various points in the evening, Kropinski, who is also vice president of the Middle Atlantic Boxing Association, must talk to the promoter, the doctor who checks all the fighters before they go into the ring and various other officials. When Pennsylvania Athletic Commissioner George Bochetto makes his way glad-handing through the cordoned-off area around the ring, he leans in to chat with Kropinski. Kropinski is information central for the evening, and he handles his duties with grace, keeping a sheaf of papers in front of him and taking notes throughout the evening. THE SPANISH WAR CLASS
by Susan Linnerud
One hundred years ago, West Point watched as its graduates saw combat in the first major international conflict in American history. The Monroe Doctrine had kept American soldiers on American soil for the greater part of the Academy’s history. Graduates had been involved in the Civil War and fought skirmishes during the Indian Wars, but for the first time, in 1898, they were fighting on foreign soil as the US made its debut as a world power. The American battleship the Maine was sent to Cuba as a show of force as rebels were fighting with the Spanish forces there. The battleship blew up in Havana Harbor, triggering the Spanish-American War. The four month conflict freed Cuba from Spanish rule and made Puerto Rico a possession of the US. Americans also fought the Spanish in the Philippines, which likewise was seeking its independence from Spain.
For the conflict with Spain, 50,000 men were transported to battlefields in the tropics12,000 miles apartwhere they won their victories without a single defeat, all within a period of 113 days from the declaration of war to the signing of the surrender protocol. New developments in the art of war had battlefield commanders communicating by telephone and regular army soldiers using smokeless powder in their weapons for the first time. The strategic movement of these soldiers was the Army’s responsibility. The Quartermaster Corps owned 11 ships when war was declared, bought 69 more in the ensuing months and chartered about 60 for specific missions. The West Point Class of 1898 watched as the nation prepared and left the Academy eager to use their recent training and join in the war effort.

Powell brought extensive experience with him to the office. Before becoming Secretary of State, he served as a key aide to the Secretary of Defense and as National Security Advisor to President Reagan. He also served 35 years in the United States Army, rising to the rank of four-star general and serving as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff during the 1989 Panama intervention and the 1991 Persian Gulf War.

The Justice Department also established the Corporate Fraud Task Force to restore integrity to the marketplace by cracking down on companies and corporate executives who abused the trust of their employees and investors.

Established by USA Boxing in 1987, the USOEC is home to one of the premier boxing teams in America, producing no less than Olympic, world and national champions.
As the official record shows, USOEC boxers accounted for one third of the 2000 U.S. Olympic boxing team and literally half of the boxing medals won at the Olympic games in Sydney, Australia. Yet, while these are enviable records for any boxing team, anywhere in the world, athletic accomplishment represents only half the story.
Aside from training some of the finest athletes in the world, the USOEC Boxing Program also prides itself on proven commitment to academic achievement. The secret of this dual success lies in a world-class coaching staff, excellent training and teaching facilities, and quality support services.
USOEC Assistant Boxing Coach Larry Nicholson agrees:
Today, Coach Mitchell and the entire USOEC staff can hold their heads high in the company of young athletes who, through courage, endurance and dedication, set an example for America and the world:

    Boxing's name recognition problem
The Associated Press ran a story for today about how Winky Wright wants to establish himself as a big name in boxing among the biggest.
Wright will fight Felix Trinidad on Saturday, and a win over "Tito" will go a long way in making him that big name in the boxing world.
But boxing has a problem with establishing stars outside its realm, to the general public.
Unless you are someone with mass appeal, like Mike Tyson or Oscar De La Hoya (for various reasons), it's hard to strike a chord with the public.
    Why?
Well, all the huge, megastar fights like Wright-Trinidad are on pay-per-view. While being on PPV obviously helps garner money for everyone involved, it also distances boxing from the public.
It's bad enough that any good title fights (or good fights, period) are either on HBO or Showtime. That already limits your audience.
Pay-per-view limits it even more. Heck, I like boxing, and I won't pony up $50 for a fight card.

By Steve Litt The first step in the Universal Troubleshooting Process is "Get the Attitude". The Attitude is much more than a first step it's a tool you use throughout the Troubleshooting Process. It's also the most interesting (at least to my audiences) part of Troubleshooting. And the toughest. And the most unbelievable. And it's the most important factor in predicting Troubleshooting success. What is The Attitude? How do you get it? How do you keep it? This issue of Troubleshooting Professional Magazine explores these issues. Some of the articles use a boxing metaphor. When I was a tech at a radio-tv shop, my boss was an ex boxer. He once told me that most of the guys he fought were his friends. In the ring it was his job to beat the other guy into submission. Nothing personal, it was just his job. Sounds a lot like an Attitude-enabled Troubleshooter battling a problem, doesn't it? So kick back, relax, and read this issue. And remember, if you're a Troubleshooter, this is your magazine. Enjoy!.
