New Olympic Sports being considered for 2012 : include golf, rugby, karate, squash and "roller sports," while softball, baseball and modern pentathlon may be on the chopping block.
If, as Jacques Rogge has stipulated, no new sport can be added without being deleted, what would you add and what would you remove?

They're talking Summer Olympics only here, though if anyone wants to nominate, oh, Ice Dancing for removal, I wouldn't argue.

Karate would be cool. Tai Kwan Do is great to watch, and I'd like to learn more about the differences between the two styles.

Sports Factor
With Amanda Smith
Summary:

What’s hot and what’s not when it comes to which sports are in or out of the Olympic Games?
A recent report by the Programme Commission of the International Olympic Committee puts baseball, softball and modern pentathlon on the chopping block. The new favourites are golf and rugby.
So how are these decisions made – especially when no sport wants to be thrown out of the Olympics, and plenty of others reckon it’s their turn to be on the O-List?
Details or Transcript: Amanda Smith: We’re starting The Sports Factor this morning with a question: What do the following sports have in common: cricket, croquet, motor-boating, polo and tug-of-war? MUSIC: ‘Time to Say Goodbye’ Amanda Smith: Yes, they’re all sports that at one time have been part of the Olympic Games, but that got the chop. Other discontinued Olympic events include live pigeon shooting, rope-climbing, an obstacle race and something called the plunge for distance, in swimming. So if you’re one of those people who thinks synchronised swimming is a strange and silly thing to have in the Olympics, well, there’ve been plenty of others in the past that you could put in that category as well. Now, late last week, the Programme Commission of the International Olympic Committee released a report with its recommendations for what sports it wants in, and out, of future Olympic Games, for Beijing and beyond. On the out-list: modern pentathlon, which has been in a shaky position for a while. The more surprising exclusions though are baseball, and softball. And those favoured for inclusion: golf and rugby. They’ve been recommended ahead of a long list of other Olympic aspirants, including squash, surfing, dance sport, bowling and chess.

A New Olympic Sport?
By Rod Mar, The Seattle Times
One of the best parts about covering an Olympics is the camaraderie that exists among the shooters.
At the end of any night, you can look around at your peers, and after the subject of "anyone up for a drink or a bite to eat?" comes, "what are you covering tomorrow?"
And the answer to that on any given day might be, "downhill", "ski-jumping", "speed-skating", or "aerials". It's a good thing no one asked me the night before my most unusual assignment of the games. I woke up before dawn to catch a media bus to park city, where we bribed a bus driver to drop us off at a resort called "the canyons" where I was the only photographer with a small group of reporters to cover.... Shovel racing.

CURLING 101
by Timothy D. Jacques
The Curling World Out There
Though the Scots have perfected curling into a science, it's the Canadians who've made it into an art form. No other people has embraced the game of curling as the Canadians with approximately 1.3 million curlers, a thriving cash-circuit, large TV ratings and several hundred clubs. Since the advent of the world curling championships in the early 1950's, Canadian curlers have won over half of them. During the 1997-98 season, Canada nearly completed a sweep in all categories (men's, both juniors, and a gold and silver at the Nagano Olympics). In Canada, if a town is large enough to support a bowling ally, it's large enough to support a curling club. Ice rinks are as numerous in Canada are there are baseball diamonds in the States. In the last few years, the popularity of curling in Canada has risen to such an extent, that it regularly surpasses hockey in ratings. Its two largest tournaments (The Brier and the Tournament of Hearts) each have a seven-day attendances of over 200,000 as well as several million television viewers. Though not on the same economic level as professional sports in the States, a successful curling team can make a respectable amount of "pocket change" from sponsorships, prize money and product endorsements. Top teams are often awarded with well-paying, part-time corporate jobs while given plenty of time to play in tournaments and practice.

In Europe, the countries best known for their curling are Scotland, Sweden, Germany and Switzerland. The idea of a "cash-circuit" is starting to take shape as regional sports networks and corporate sponsors take notice. Since the debut of the sport at the Nagano Olympics, several counties have updated their facilities or have officially joined the World Curling Federation (Russia, Belarus and Slovakia are recent additions). Future expansion is expected in the Former Soviet Bloc countries (Poland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania).

is RP bowling’s lucky charm
RARELY, if ever, will you catch bowling chief Steve Hontiveros not smiling. His chinky eyes virtually disappear whenever he flashes his friendly grin. In local sports circles, Hontiveros is known as a very likeable fellow. So it came as no surprise that the amiable president of the Philippine Bowling Congress was elected head of the prestigious International Bowling Federation—known by its acronym FIQ—by acclamation in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia last September. Even Hontiveros least expected the outcome, saying: “I did not even declare myself a candidate since the filing for candidacy was last July yet. Everything just snowballed once my name was called and I ran unopposed.” The election of Hontiveros to the FIQ’s highest office is recognition for nearly three decades of promoting the sport not only locally but also internationally. At 59, the sports official, who is also the Philippine Olympic Committee first vice president, is the third Filipino to lead a world sports body after Gonzalo “Lito” Puyat and Florencio Campomanes. Puyat and Campomanes were former presidents of the International Basketball Federation and World Chess Federation, respectively.

Bowling associations to merge
By DAN MANOYAN

Posted: May 17, 2004 Since 1972, the governing organizations of bowling have shared the same building in Greendale. Advertisement
Now, for the first time, they will be under the same big tent as well. Recently, the big three of bowling - the Women's International Bowling Congress, the American Bowling Congress and USA Bowling - agreed to merge. The new blanket organization will be known as the United States Bowling Congress. The lone holdout to the merger, the Young American Bowling Alliance, did an about-face on Saturday when its board of directors unanimously agreed to join the merger. YABA had originally voted down a proposal to join the merger. The merger, one of the largest non-profit mergers in United States history, will become effective Jan. 1.

South China's Guangdong Province have set a target of retaining the top rank at the gold medal tally at the 2nd Non-Olympic Sports National Games slated to open on Saturday in Mianyang, of southwest China's Sichuan Province.
Guangdong scored a shining triple by top-ranking for the total gold medal, medal tally and team standings at the inaugural Games held two years ago in Ningbo of east China's Zhejiang Province.
This year Guangdong are determined to secure a second ranking while trying to defend their number one place, by winning a total of 28 gold medals. They are to face 53 other delegations from across the country.
A total of 6,000 athletes and coaches are expected to be in Mianyang, which is 120 kilometers northeast of Chengdu, Sichuan's provincial capital.

A typical top bass fishing spot on the Upper Clarence (not far from Tabulam). Last weekend brought big tides, big currents and clear water and it made for difficult estuary fishing but some nice catches from the headlands and on the end of the breakwaters. Offshore there were good numbers of fish but not all were huge but there were some nice reds around the 3kg size. It was a good few days for flathead offshore on the 32 fathom line. Blackfish (Luderick) have improved markedly. We managed 16 last weekend on green weed from the Porpoise Wall. NSW Fisheries will be closing its office in Ballina but will maintain some staff, probably compliance officers. Certainly we need to at least have some kind of presence. The dry weather continues and there are even a few bream and flathead being caught in Lismore (97km from the Entrance). The new week will bring better tides and it should be a good week to get into some bream in the river of an evening and tailor at the end of the breakwater late of an afternoon and early morning.

Bowling is the second highest participation sport in the world, and quite popular as a sport and entertainment. With more and more Bowling Alley's opening in different parts of the country, this has given a fillip to the leisure business in general and FRCs in particular.
Bowling is already a medal sport in the Asian and Commonwealth games and is expected to gain recognition as a medal sport in the Olympics in the near future.
Bowling has always been a popular activity and is well on the way to becoming an Olympic Sport. At the summer games in Seoul and Barcelona, international competitions of the world's best players took place and last summer in Atlanta, athletes from all over the globe sought relaxation and enjoyment in the Olympic Village's bowling centre.
