History
Wheelchair athletics has its roots in World War II. Before then, rehabilitation for any type of spinal cord injury was rare with fewer than one person in five surviving more than three years. World War II, responsible for sending many thousands to veteran's hospitals as paraplegics, quadriplegics, or amputees produced an awareness that more than medicine was needed to return some semblance of normalcy to, and extend the lives of, these men. A form of rehabilitative therapy was required that was more than just developing muscle tone from the exercise apparatus positioned above their bed. People whose body image and self-worth were devastated by their condition needed mental and physical therapy to restore a positive quality of life attitude. A difficult challenge, especially when it is realized there is no known cure for paralysis. In this chasm, athletics for wheelchair users was born. Wheelchair racing and wheelchair basketball preceded wheelchair bowling as a form of rehabilitative therapy. All succeeded in providing physical and emotional exercise. Social contact was stimulated.

Women in Sports
By Sharon Fabian It used to seem like sports were just for boys and men. When high school students went to watch a game after school, it was always a boys' team. Anyone who turned on the TV in the evening to watch the sports report would see the latest news about men in sports.
No wonder that everyone believed that sports were for men, not women. It seemed like there were no good women athletes and no important sports stories about women.
A little research shows that this never was true. Women have participated in sports and physical fitness activities since the time of the ancient Olympic Games. Even though women did not participate in the contests at ancient Olympia, young girls did participate in foot races in separate games in honor of the goddess Hera. The modern Olympics did not include women athletes when it began in 1896, but women did participate in the next Olympics held four years later in 1900 in Paris, France. The nineteen women who entered that year's Olympics competed in tennis, croquet, and golf. Since that year, women's participation in the Olympics has increased steadily. In the 2000 Olympics held in Sydney, Australia, over 4,000 women participated. They competed in 25 of the 28 Olympic sports.

Little known facts
and history of bowling. How old is the game of bowling?
Very, very old. Bowling Pins and other bowling equpiment have been discovered in an Egyptian child's grave dating back to 5200 BC. Bowling games have been popular all over the world. The Germans in 200 AD rolled stones at nine wooden clubs called kegles (bowlers in Germany are still sometimes called "keglers"). The English were bowling as early as the 1100s. The Dutch are the ones who introduced the sport to America in the 1600s. They called it "Dutch pins" and Dutch colonists in what is now New Yourk City Liked to bowl in a particular section of the city so much that it acquired the name "Bowling Green". Why did an extra pin get added to the game of bowling?

Bowling genius - Wu Siu-hong
The hardships of outstanding athletes
Wu Siu-hong is a well-known name to all homes in Hong Kong, he was Hong Kong¡¦s ¡§Bowling Genius¡¨ who made a name for himself as early as in the age of 16. Siu-hong, nicknamed ¡§Hong-Chai¡¨, was interviewed for supporters to know more about this sport star.
Everybody would agree that Hong-Chai¡¦s achievements in such an early age are marvelous. He got in touch with the sport of bowling by chance de facto, just like many other athletes. ¡¥When I was eight years old, I went to ¡§yum cha¡¨ with my family one day and was free after that. So, my sister suggested going to play bowling together. Surprisingly, I played very well in that game!¡¦
Before that, I only played bowling in video games. I could never imagine that I would be a professional bowling player at that time. Since then, bowling had become a sport he played with his family during leisure time.
No Prize is guaranteed
Under the support from his family, and consistent training, Hong-Chai has obtained some great achievements in bowling, with lots of prizes captured. However, he knows that the prizes are not prepared for him from the beginning, and that he still need to work hard after capturing the ¡¥Outstanding Youth Athlete¡¦ prize twice. He has a desire of gaining more prizes, and eventually acquired this title six times. ¡¥Each time I take the trophy, I feel like winning it for the first time!¡¦, he said.

Home Headlines you might have missed » September 05, 2002 Hopes for Bowling's Olympic future remains dim The "Programme Commission" recommended to the IOC Executive Board that bowling should not be included in the Olympic Games. In short, the commission believes that bowling doesn't increase the value of the program over the sports already on the program. Although they did recommend Golf and 7 vs. 7 Rugby. With Golf's ratings on the decline and threats of boycotts over club membership restrictions, I'm unsure how they see that will "increase the value." The fat lady hasn't even begun to sing though. The final decision is to be made by the executive board in November when the IOC will hold a Special Session in Mexico City. There they can choose to ignore the recommendations of Programme Commission.

  • Hundreds of years ago, around 1046, England was conquered by Denmark and occupied by the Danish. The English finally forced them out after many bloody battles. A few years later, an English boy was walking through an old battleground. He uncovered a Danish skull left over from England's war with Denmark and started kicking it around. A couple other boys joined him. But some of them hurt their feet on the skull, so they decided to use an inflated cow bladder. Other sources show that it led to soccer and rugby. In 1146, grown men were playing football. Sometimes there were more than one hundred players on the same team. Instead of helmets players grew their hair longer to protect their skulls from severe injuries. Rugby, starting as a part of football, was developed by William Webb Ellias in 1823 in college. Players were ordered not to play in town but in vacant fields because the sport was so violent. They established some rules and they agreed that both teams should have the same number of players, though usually the teams still had more than fifty players on a team.
