  • Hundreds of years ago, around 1046, England was conquered by Denmark and occupied by the Danish. The English finally forced them out after many bloody battles. A few years later, an English boy was walking through an old battleground. He uncovered a Danish skull left over from England's war with Denmark and started kicking it around. A couple other boys joined him. But some of them hurt their feet on the skull, so they decided to use an inflated cow bladder. Other sources show that it led to soccer and rugby. In 1146, grown men were playing football. Sometimes there were more than one hundred players on the same team. Instead of helmets players grew their hair longer to protect their skulls from severe injuries. Rugby, starting as a part of football, was developed by William Webb Ellias in 1823 in college. Players were ordered not to play in town but in vacant fields because the sport was so violent. They established some rules and they agreed that both teams should have the same number of players, though usually the teams still had more than fifty players on a team.

Origins
The precise origins of cricket, and even of its name, remain unclear. Some manuscripts from the and centuries show diagrams of early forms of cricket. The Royal Wardrobe accounts for report that £6 was paid out for the 15-year old Prince Edward to play creag and other games, though there is no evidence that this creag was a form of cricket. Certainly little was heard of the game for the next 300 years. Nor is there any record of any commercial interest in the game from innkeepers or other entrepreneurs. Cricket, if it was played at all, was not of sufficient popularity or disruptive enough to be subject to a specific prohibition, although some club and ball games were banned in England. For example, a statute of King Edward IV Hands in and hands out illegal because it interfered with the compulsory practice of archery In there was a dispute over a school's ownership of a plot of land in which a 59-year old coroner, John Derrick, testified that he and his school friend had played "creckett" at the site fifty years earlier. This is generally considered to be the first mention of cricket in the English language - the school was the

NEWS ARCHIVE 2002 Central American and Caribbean Games 2002 [23 december 2002] The Games, taking place every four (4) years were a bit dissapointing for the Netherlands Antilles. They were being organised between November 23 - December 7 2002 in the country of El Salvador.
Considering the several medallists of the ODESUR games, the expectations of the 68 athletes were set very high.
Unfortunately the Antillean team did not succeed upon expectations. They won two (2) bronze medals; one for Karate-do (Ulvic Jamanika) and one for the women softball team.
Two young swimmers Jonathan de Graaff and Vincent van Rutten established different personal records at these games, and Van Rutten even qualified for the Pan American Games. It goes without saying that the Neth. Antilles have much young (undiscovered) talents, which need investments to develop to reach the elite level.
Lack of practice matches/competitions abroad seems to be one of the deficiencies. The sports federations have an arduous task to elevate our sports level..

Gold Medal Lessons For Life
by Rabbi Mitchell Smith
August, 2000 (Reprinted from Rosh Hashanah, 5757/1996)For 2 weeks this summer millions of Americans were riveted to their television sets, as they followed the pageantry and excitement of the Olympic Games. The thrill of these contests, whose motto is "faster, higher, stronger", was in watching individuals who have dedicated their lives to reaching the heights of human athletic performance, and knowing of the intense dedication that has led them to this moment. Taking note of athletes who strive to reach their best, we can find a message for each of us. The men and women who took their place on the Olympic winners' podium made their way there because of certain values, strategies and practices which I believe can help all of us to make life fuller, more joyful and more meaningful. As we usher in the Jewish New Year, a time of soul searching and introspection, we can benefit from their example, and their "Gold Medal lessons for life". One of the athletes who most captured the attention of viewers was Dan O'Brien, who won the gold medal in the decathlon. Not only because this is one of the hallmark events in the Olympics, earning the winner the title of the world's greatest athlete, but also because four years ago, O'Brien failed to even qualify for the Barcelona games. This, to an athlete who trains so rigorously for one purpose, can be devastating. Deprived of his chance in '92, Dan O'Brien didn't give up. For four additional years he continued to train so that he might reach this moment.

Harmony and Progress
The SLOOC formulated the Games motto to implicate the significance and characteristics of the Seoul Olympic Games and to represent the spirits of the Olympic Games. The SLOOC organized a consultative council among relevant personalities in January 1984 to work on the Olympic motto; reflecting the opinions of academic, journalistic and sports communities, and the SLOOC adopted "Harmony and Progress" as the Olympic motto in June of the same year. The Olympic motto is consisted of four sections. The first section underlines the Korea's orientation toward peace. The second section deals with the compliance with the Olympic Charter and the pursuit of harmony as well as the progress of mankind. The third section emphasizes the excellence of traditional Korean culture and exemplary staging of the Olympic Games. And the fourth section implicates the significance of the Seoul Olympic Games.
To build a peaceful world, a primary goal of the Olympic Movement is the unwavering and historic desire of the Korean people. With this lofty goal in mind, Korea adopted "Harmony and Progress" as the motto for the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games.
