In Olympic Footsteps: An International Tour
History meets athletic legend in cities throughout the globe, from Athens to Nagano.
By Colleen Kaleda
Athens, Greece

It was 776 B.C. when that first foot race was held, in Olympia, about 75 miles from Athens in the Peloponnese. Dedicated to Zeus, the Olympic festival was a religious rite, held every four years. The sacrifices have gone, but the athletic competitions and crowning of winners are our remainders of that ancient time.

The Sports Illustrated Olympic Daily is published in Salt Lake City and available in event venues and on newsstands for 16 straight days during the 2002 Winter Games. Here are some sights and scenes from today’s edition. Going Four Gold
At 35, Germany’s Georg Hackl is sliding for Olympic history
Georg Hackl is 5'8" tall and shaped like a football, his 179 pounds spread over his frame as if it were a warm layer of soft, freshly baked bread. He can't run fast, jump high or lift massive amounts of weight, and if you had to identify the sport in which he is an international star, you would guess bowling, or maybe bass fishing. He is the pudgy neighbor mowing his lawn in tight gym shorts, the social studies teacher in polyester Sansabelts, the little kid who could never get a game. Yet Hackl, a 35-year-old German, can make Olympic history tomorrow by winning his fourth consecutive gold medal in luge. (He had the fastest practice run of the day yesterday; competition opens at 4 p.m. today with two runs at Utah Olympic Park.) No athlete in Winter Olympics history has won the same event four times in a row beloved U.S. speed skater Bonnie Blair is among several to have won three straight and if Hackl had been half a second faster in Calgary in 1988, he would be gunning for number five. Just as im portant as his records, his presence demands that we reconsider precisely what makes a person an athlete. Burning Question Q: Would a hockey player be competitive in speed skating or short track?

Recent History
2056 - In Tokyo, Japan, the Olympic games are held. Due to the Japanese government’s refusal to allow metahumans to compete with humans, 60% of the nations invited refuse to attend. Furthermore, no nation boycotting the games televise them. In response, the IOC forms a “World” team for athletes from the boycotting nations to compete in as independents. Still, the 2056 Olympics has the lowest attendance record in Olympic history. To deal with this problem the IOC cancels the 2060 Olympics until the metahuman question is dealt with. 2056 - In Corporate Sector, Hawai'i, riots break out in protest to corporate influence over Hawai'ian sovereignty. Corporate security fires on the protesters killing many of them. In retaliation the protesters detonate explosive devices in the Renraku and Monobe facilities resulting in massive fatalities. The riots eventually spread to the royal palace and protesters call out against Ali'i Kamehameha V. 2056 - In Hawai'i, U.S.A., using the riots as a catalyst, the Na Kama'aina party and ALOHA stage a coup against Ali'i Kamehameha V. They instill his distant cousin in his place.

77. The History Of Track And Field. Where Running Started.
The history and origins of track and field events. Track and field has beenthe centerpiece of the summer olympic games since their revival in 1896.
http://athleticscholarships.net/history-of-track-and-field.htm
Home About Us What We Do Questions ... Contact Us was this how track and field started the origins and facts about running and track How it all began The ancient Olympic Games began in the year 776 BC, when Koroibos, a cook from the nearby city of Elis, won the stadium race, a foot race 600 feet long. According to some literary traditions, this was the only athletic event of the games for the first 13 Olympic festivals. Other evidence, both literary and archaeological, suggests that the games may have existed at Olympia much earlier than this date, perhaps as early as the 10th or 9th century BC. A series of bronze tripods have been found at Olympia, some of which appear to be dated at about the 9th century BC, and it has also been suggested that these tripods may in fact be prizes for some of the early events at Olympia. The marathon was not an event of the ancient Olympic games. The marathon is a modern event that was first introduced in the Modern Olympic Games of 1896 in Athens, a race from Marathon - northeast of Athens - to the Olympic Stadium, a distance of 42.195 kilometers. The race commemorates the run of Pheidippides, an ancient "day-runner" who carried the news of the Persian landing at Marathon of 490 BC to Sparta (a distance of 149 miles) in order to enlist help for the battle. According to the fifth century BC ancient Greek historian Herodotus, Pheidippides delivered the news to the Spartans the next day. The distance of the modern marathon was standardized as 26 miles 385 yards or 42,195 kilometers in 1908 when the Olympic Games were held in London. The distance was the exact measurement between Windsor Castle, the start of the race, and the finish line inside White City Stadium

Jeremy isn't driving a new Mercedes or sporting a $60 million Nike contract like Tiger. "I am amazed," said Jeremy, "at the people who ask for my autograph" Jeremy didn't disappoint the dozens of fans... who cheered him on as he shot yet another 300 game to add some excitement to the event. "The idea that we can all have such a great time bowling while raising thousands of dollars for a worthy cause like leukemia research gives me a really great feeling,"
October 21, 1997 Collegiate bowler registers "firsts" by Jan Leasure What Jeremy may not realize is that the tremendous visibility that he received under the spotlight of bowling the "900" has reflected in a most unique and positive way for the sport of bowling itself. Jeremy may unknowingly end up being the single-most positive catalyst that helps shine new respect on a sport that has traditionally fought for it's place to be viewed as more than a pizza and beer recreation. "I am amazed," said Jeremy, "at the people who ask for my autograph whenever I walk into a bowling center. It warms my heart when junior bowlers ask me questions about bowling and tell me that they would like to bowl as well as I do. I understand because I still feel this way about the pros that I admire like Amletto Monacelli. I almost couldn't believe it myself when I had the honor of conducting a junior bowling clinic with Amletto just prior to the Lima Ohio Regional in September at a local middle school. For me this was a dream come true."
