Vision 2016
aspires for Botswana to be a compassionate, just and caring nation with all the key elements of volunteerism. Botswana has been one of the main hosts of United Nations Volunteers (UNV) in Africa. The deployment of UN volunteers has been an important feature of UNDP's support to the country, particularly due to capacity problems and justifiably due to the demand for cost-effective expertise for the bulk of programmes being supported by the Government of Botswana As many as 300 UNVs have served in the country which grew from 1973 to around 86 in late 1989. The UNVs have collaborated with various national partners in drought relief, teaching, water and sanitation, nursing and other technically-oriented fields, e.g., postal services, soil mapping, meteorology, civil aviation, data processing, business management, and handicrafts. Individual UNVs have successfully transferred their technical knowledge with relative ease to the national co-workers who worked with them as counterparts. To date, there are thirty-seven (38) international UNV specialists representing seventeen (17) countries, who are serving different host agencies in Botswana. Most are attached to nationally-executed (NEX) projects, e.g., support to the National AIDS Programme and support to the National Gender Programme. This number is expected to grow to 50 by the end of this year as it embarks its recruitment for more and more UNVs in Botswana. These UNVs will be assigned to the National AIDS Programme and in support to the UN Secretary General's initiative, the

The Okavango Delta of the Republic of Botswana is a large wetland surrounded by the Kalahari desert . The Okavango is a unique ecosystem and has large populations of African mammals, birds, and other animals. Conservationists have taken a great interest in the preservation of the Delta. Of less interest have been the 100,000 people who call the Delta home. This site is dedicated to the dissemination of information concerning the Okavango Delta Peoples.
Who are the Okavango Delta Peoples?
The Okavango Delta peoples consist of five ethnic groups, each with its own ethnic identity and language. They are Hambukushu (also known as Mbukushu, Bukushu, Bukusu, Mbukuschu, Ghuva, Haghuva), Dxeriku (Dceriku, Diriku, Gciriku, Gceriku, Giriku, Niriku), Wayeyi (Bayei, Bayeyi, Yei), Bugakwe (Kxoe, Khwe, Kwengo, Barakwena, G/anda) and Xanekwe (Gxanekwe, //tanekwe, River Bushmen, Swamp Bushmen, G//ani, //ani). The Hambukushu, Dxeriku, and Wayeyi are all Bantus who have traditionally engaged in mixed economies of millet/sorghum agriculture; fishing, hunting, and the collection of wild plant foods; and pastoralism. The Bugakwe and Xanekwe are Bushmen who have traditionally practiced fishing, hunting, and the collection of wild plant foods; Bugakwe utilized both forest and riverine resources while the Xanekwe mostly focused on riverine resources. The Hambukushu, Dxeriku, and Bugakwe are present along the

New African April, 2003 by Jonathan Mazower A fierce argument has erupted in recent months over the fate of the Gana and Gwi people (San) in Botswana. The controversy has now dragged in the diamond giant De Beers, the World Bank, Australian Aborigines, Ogiek hunter-gatherers in Kenya and Friends of the Earth USA. In 1961 when Botswana was still a British protectorate, the Central Kalahari Game Reserve was created to provide a secure homeland for the Gana and Gwi who had lived there for thousands of years, and protect the wildlife they depended on.

Botswana is a landlocked country located in Southern Africa. It has land borders with Zimbabwe in the northeast, South Africa in the south and southeast and with Namibia to the west.
The country is a broad tableland with a mean altitude of 3,300 ft. A vast plateau of about 4,000 ft in height, extending from near Kanye north to the Zimbabwean border, divides the country into two distinct topographical regions.
The eastern region is hilly bush country and grassland (veld). To the west lie the Okavango Swamps and the Kalahari Desert. The only sources of permanent surface water are the Chobe River in the north, the Limpopo in the east, and the Okvango in the northwest. In seasons of heavy rainfall, floodwaters flow into the Makarikari Salt Pans and Lake Ngami.

BOTSWANA
