Mother and child benefit from Botswana government’s resolve to fight HIV/AIDS
When Dineo, a single mother in Gaborone, Botswana, found out she was pregnant in the spring of 1999, she was terrified. Dineo has tested positive for HIV and she was afraid she would give the virus to her child. Through a nurse at an antenatal clinic, Dineo learned about a programme in Gaborone that aimed to prevent mothers from spreading the virus to their children by providing the anti-retroviral drug AZT. The programme was one of two mother-to-child transmission pilot projects sponsored by the Botswana government and UNICEF. The drugs, donated to UNICEF by the pharmaceutical company Glaxo Wellcome, were administered to Dineo during her labour, and given to her baby, Noineelo, for four weeks. Because almost all of Botswana has access to clean drinking water, Dineo was counseled not to breastfeed and was given a year’s worth of baby formula. Although she would not know the status of her child for another 18 months, she knew that she had halved the chances of passing on the virus – no small achievement in a country that has highest HIV prevalence in the world. Some 28 per cent of Botswana’s 1.6 million population are estimated to be HIV-positive. To fight the epidemic, the government of Botswana has taken an aggressive stance, allocating substantial human and financial resources to the fight against HIV/AIDS.

The Government of Botswana has noted with growing concern the appearance in sections of the Zimbabwe media of unbalanced, distorted, and on occasion, even openly hostile reports directed against the Government and the people of Botswana. The recent appearance of an editorial comment in the Bulawayo Chronicle newspaper entitled "Time to act against Botswana" is but an extreme example of what can only be described as a pattern of misguided and xenophobic attacks on the good name of this country and its people.
The ingenuity of these papers of deriving facts from fairy tales and publishing them as such can only be interpreted as a deliberate and systematic attempt to fuel hatred and xenophobia between our peoples and to sour the warm and cordial relations that the Governments of Botswana and Zimbabwe continue to enjoy.
Botswana and Zimbabwe enjoy long standing cordial relations which have been reinforced and enhanced by formal structures of cooperation between the two. The Botswana/Zimbabwe Joint Permanent Commission on Cooperation and the Botswana /Zimbabwe Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security provide mechanisms for discussion of important issues in the relations between our two countries and have served both our countries well.

search avert.org Botswana is one of the countries that has been hardest hit by the worldwide HIV epidemic. In 2004 there were an estimated 260,000 people in Botswana living with HIV, or 350,000 according to a UNAIDS estimate for the end of 2003. This, in a country with a total population of 1.6 million, gives Botswana a prevalence rate of 36.5%, the second highest in the world after Swaziland. Life expectancy is only 39 years, while it would have been 72, if it were not for AIDS . There are around 60,000 registered orphans in the country but it is feared that Botswana will have about 200,000 orphans in 2010 if the current situation is not reversed. In an address to the UN General Assembly in 2001, the President of Botswana, Festus Mogae, said 'we are threatened with extinction. People are dying in chillingly high numbers. It is a crisis of the first magnitude.' Botswana has become the first African country to aim to provide antiretroviral therapy to its citizens on a national scale. It is believed by many that if any country in Africa is going to succeed in implementing such a comprehensive HIV/AIDS care and treatment programme, then it is Botswana. The country has enjoyed a period of unbroken peace since 1966 and has become relatively prosperous due to its diamond mines. The annual per capita income is US$3,300, amongst the highest in the area.
The History of HIV/AIDS in Botswana
Botswana's first AIDS case was reported in 1985. Then AIDS was seen as a disease that affected male homosexuals in the West and people from other African countries.

    Home History of Democracy
History of Democracy Struggle for Independence The 1908 Act of Union which created the Union of South Africa had a provision that the Union should grow by incorporating other territories like Botswana, Lesotho, and Swaziland. The British were willing to hand over these territories now that the situation had changed from what it was in 1885. However, the provision for incorporation stated that this could only be done with the consent of the peoples of the then High Commission Territories i.e. Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland. Many South African Prime Ministers, from Hertzog to Verwoerd agitated for incorporation. Even on the eve of independence European settler communities in Tati, Tuli Block and Ghanzi asked to be ceded to South Africa. Botswana chiefs and later the nationalist leaders vehemently opposed the idea of incorporation. There is enough historical evidence dating back to the introduction of the Bechuanaland Border Police between 1890 and 1891 that Batswana were dissatisfied with British protection. Signs of contemporary nationalism in Botswana go beyond politics. The formation of independent churches and schools in the 1940s was an articulate demand for a new political and social system tailored according to the needs of Batswana.
