    Okavango Delta

The Okavango is the world's largest inland delta - a unique ecosystem of labyrinthine waterways that create thousands of verdant, palm-studded islands. Often referred to as the "Earth's Last Eden", the Okavango's savannahs, floodplains and woodlands teem with virtually all of the great animals of Africa including the world's largest population of elephant (70,000+) and highly endangered wild dog, as well as many other rare species such as cheetah and aardwolf. Botswana is also famous for its magnificent lions. The Okavango is a pristine, pure wetland which is the result of rivers in Angola and Namibia spreading over the Kalahari sands of northern Botswana. The papyrus lined channels and lagoons offer shelter to hundreds of species of birds, crocodile and hippo, and the "islands" formed by those channels are home to thousands of elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, and over 450 species of birds. For a safari full of contrasts, we like to combine the Kalahari, Okavango, and even a stop in one or two neighboring countries. Namibia's Skeleton Coast is a must. Please have a look at some of the sample itineraries listed below and remember - we can do a 100% custom itinerary for you.

small, land-locked country north of South Africa and east of Namibia, Botswana is the most stable and fully democratic country in Africa. The dramatic exception is to the North where the floodwaters from Angola spread like a giant hand to form the biggest delta wetland in the world - often referred to as "Earth's Last Eden"...the Okavango. Between the arid vastness of the desert and the lush green wetland of the Okavango Delta, Botswana remains a sparsely populated and relatively little visited country, a plus for EXPLORE travelers. Botswana...here one finds the Africa of the imagination - pure, wild, and spectacularly beautiful.
