Safari . The word simply means "travel" in Swahili, but for many, it alludes to wonders first envisioned in childhood: sweeping savannas, big snarling cats, thundering herds of elephant and wildebeest. Like its meaning, the word roams the imagination, becoming other words and places, like serengeti, sahara , or Kilimanjaro . Safari crosses the landscape of the mind, until it finally merges with the name of the great continent itself, Africa. Geographia invites our readers to explore all the traditional African safari destinations, but the game parks and wildlife reserves are only the beginning of the adventure. The second largest continent on Earth, Africa contains more countries than any other. With a history of human habitation that begins with the oldest known ancestors of man, the continent's cultural wealth easily matches its natural attractions. Empires rose and fell in Africa thousands of years before the European powers began their protracted exploitation of the continent, and much pre-colonial culture remains intact.

The aim of the German Cultural Weeks which are being staged by the German Embassy in Gaborone from September to November 2004 is to present Germany in Botswana. Although Germany has long since been a recognized political and economic partner for Botswana, German culture has quite literally been a blind spot. The organizers would therefore like to present a varied programme which shows people in Botswana an interesting country with a lively cultural scene in order to encourage them to learn more about Germany. Friends of classical/church music and choral singing should not miss the performance by the Limburger Domchor. The performance by DJ Ame will impress Gaborone's lively and trendy music scene and be a big hit with young people, while the unconventional vocal music of the Singphoniker shows what can be done musically with six voices. One highlight of the Cultural Weeks has been be the film week which is intended to acquaint film buffs in Botswana with German history in an unconventional manner from the viewpoint of both East and West.

Virtual Journals Letters An American Physics Instructor in Botswana For two years, 1990-91, I took part in a once-in-a-lifetime adventure: I taught geophysics- my specialty- in Botswana, a country whose economic development was tied to geophysics and whose culture was exotic and very different from my own. Historically, Botswana's primary form of wealth has been cattle. In social contexts, that emphasis remains, but more westernized forms of wealth now influence the nation's economy. Botswana's relatively recent financial gains result directly from geophysics. De Beers, the huge international diamond company headquartered in South Africa, has long been interested in expanding its mining operations into Botswana. In 1967, De Beers geologist Gavin Lamont discovered the Orapa kimberlite, a volcanic rock vein that produces diamonds; that discovery greatly transformed Botswanan life. Foreign money poured into the treasury, and for some Botswanans, the thirst for Western consumer goods replaced the old appetite for amassing large herds of cattle. One beneficiary of the new prosperity was the University of Botswana. Its student body increased rapidly, and faculty members, like me, were recruited from abroad.

Terrain
The territory almost entirely consists of the broad, flat plateau of the Kalahari Desert in the south-west, with some hills in the eastern part of the country. The highest point is Tsodilo Hill with 1,489 m. In the north-west, the Okavango River empties into the Kalahari sands, creating the largest inland river delta in the world, a vast oasis of flora and fauna (approximately 10,000 km²). Since precipitation is very low, and temperatures extremely high, the Okavango never reaches the sea, but dries up. Only in times of heavy rainfall, the river stretches around 200 km further to the east, reaching the Makgadikgadi saltpans.
Climate
Botswana's climate can get rather cool, particularly during the dry winter months (May to September) when evening temperatures drop sharply and night occasionally brings frost. Summers can get rather hot with some short, but heavy rains (October to March). The majority of the rain falls in the north and east of the country. Average precipitation is comparatively low, as high temperatures (up to 40°C) and regular winds blow across the plateaus, most of the rainfall is lost to evaporation.
