Botswana School
What was intended to be a mere motivational talk with feed back from students turned out to be a pleasant surprise for Dr. Brader Brathwaite, a visiting Lecturer from the University of the West Indies, Mount Hope Faculty of Medical Sciences. Exposing students to guest speakers have become a regular feature with the Rainbow High School's Guidance and Counseling Department. This time, however, the school's Steelpan Ensemble In his opening discourse Rainbow's principal Mr. Sandy Gilmore welcomed Dr. Brathwaite as coming from "that great cricketing region - The West Indies". From this term students at this private English medium school who do music are exposed to the steelpan - a rare offering for the landlocked country.

MALAPO, Botswana In the Kalahari Desert, where the landscape stretches brown and dusty in every direction, water is power. So when the truckloads of men from the government rumbled up to this ancient Bushmen village three years ago, they found the steel drums that held the community's precious reserves. Then, said villagers, the men tipped the drums over, spilling the water into the sand. Mongwegi Thabogwelo, a lean, hard-working woman who appeared to be in her forties, recalls their cruel words that day: " 'It's the water,' they said, 'that is keeping you from relocating.' " The forced removal of the Bushmen was the culmination of what the Botswana government said was years of effort to bring development to southern Africa's most traditional people. The Bushmen have resisted at every turn, defying hunting restrictions, refusing to abandon their villages and battling the government in a court challenge they hope will reverse policies that, they say, have pushed them to the edge of extinction. At the center of the court case has been testimony about the destruction of such villages as Malapo, which proceeded with an efficiency the Bushmen found terrifying. The men from the government dismantled dozens of huts made of branches and brush, villagers said. Then they ordered the Bushmen descendants of people who have survived the harsh conditions of the Kalahari for tens of thousands of years to board the trucks for an arduous, six-hour drive to the government camp that was to be their new home.

The Minister of Labor and Home Affairs, Mr Thebe Mogami, and the UNDP Resident Representative, Mr Bjoern Foerde, launched it at the UN Place. Over one hundred participants, including academics, civil society organisations, NGOs, government institutions and departments, and the media, attended the launch. The launch was divided into two segments. The Minister and an overview slide presentation by the Resident Representative made up the first part of formal speeches. In his presentation UNDP Resident Representative debunked myths in the report that policies that encourage the flourishing of cultural identity and diversity do not fragment and result in conflict and weakening development or authoritarian. He added that as a human right, cultural liberty is as important as politics and the economy because people should live and be what they choose. The second part included panel discussions on the subject of culture and civil governance. There were two groups of panelists. The first group of panelists, made up of well-known opinion makers tackled the issue of

The Tribes and Cultures Safari
With Benson Siyawareva 13 Days Benson Siyawareva is one of our top guides( image above) He manages one of our Zimbabwe camps and is recognized as one of the region's best naturalists. On this safari, he hosts the group through the many different cultures of southern Africa. We start off just north of Johannesburg at the "Cradle of Mankind" where it is thought modern man had his humble early beginnings millions of years ago. We contrast this with a visit to Soweto, the vibrant "city within a city" in Johannesburg for a taste of modern day township life. We then head for Namibia and visit three contrasting tribes and cultures - the Herero, the "Riemvasmakers" and the nomadic Himba. From Namibia, we travel to the northern reaches of the Okavango and meet with the BaYei and Batawana who have lived in and around the Okavango for centuries. We then travel down to the Kalahari for hands-on San/Bushman experiences. The safari finishes in Benson's home country where he will guide the group in his natural habitats and with his people.

Gaborone - Culture Being young and brash, a well-laid-out city of cinderblock suburbs, Gaborone has all the facilities of any modern capital city. There is a range of hotels, and a choice of cinemas and casinos. Restaurants are numerous and varied, night clubs often host live music by local artists. The National Museum is situated near the centre of town and houses important collections of traditional crafts and southern African fine art. It is also the home of the Botswana Society which has a rich tradition of researching Botswana's pre-history and from whom you can obtain information about various interesting aspects of the country, like the Aha Hills, Drotsky's caves and so on. There is an international airport on the outskirts of the city. One of the city's more striking buildings is Orapa House at the intersection of Mandela Drive and Khama Crescent. This building has floors specially designed to make maximum use of daylight without direct sunlight for the purpose of sorting and grading Botswana's fabulous diamond wealth. On the edge of the city, set among hills and dense bush, is the city's main water source, Gaborone Dam. A popular local resort, it is available for non-motorised water-sport , but a Water Utilities Corporation permit is needed. Bass, bream and barbel tempt the avid fishermen in summer, and the Gaborone Yacht Club has it's own swimming pool - not a bad idea since the dam not only has the occasional crocodile that escapes translocation, but bilharzia as well.

Francistown - Culture O ne of Botswana's industrial centers, Francistown's population has doubled in the last decade to more than 60,000 with the influx of mining and manufacturing jobs and a growing international corporate presence. The real boom came in the late 1970's, when Rhodesian interests fled across the border to set up shop in a safer territory within striking distance of their former holdings. Born as a gold mining town at the confluence of the Tati and Inchwe rivers, the city and its environs still host major mining interests, along with a variety of other industries, from slaughterhouses to knitwear factories. The city's development has been relatively unchecked by planning, and, for visitors, there are few cultural attractions for tourism. Business rules here, and hotels and restaurants cater to the 9-to-5 clientele. The city is a major travel hub, with a railway station and airport serving as transit stops for those heading north and west to the safari-lands. The city is also linked by major roadways to the capital of Gaborone and to the Okavango Delta gateway of Maun. Blue Jacket Square, Francistown is a must visit.
