Cgara, 24, is a San guide who shows tourists his people's unique knowledge of the Kalahari at a community-owned game farm near D'kar in Ghanzi district, in central-west Botswana. He is one of the few San youth with education, a job and a future. The estimated 50,000 San in Botswana are "the poorest of the poor", says Alice Mogwe, head of Ditshwanelo, the Centre for Human Rights. Botswana is rich in diamonds and cattle, with a population of just 1.6 million. But as an ethnic minority, the San experience both poverty and allegedly discrimination. They are called "Basarwa" (those who don't raise cattle, in the Tswana language), a term they feel is demeaning.

CULTURE Western dress has been general among people in Botswana, except at the poorest level, since the late 19th century. Common diet and cuisine consist of sorghum and corn porridge, beans and pulses and traditional spinach, supplemented by tomato, potato, onion, and cabbage usually purchased from stores. Meat consumption has become more common with the opening of small butcheries selling beef. Traditional foods include dried phane caterpillars from mopane woodland, eaten as relish or snacks, fruits such as the wild morulaplum, and beer made from sorghum or millet. Families in rural villages live in traditional compounds, usually with two or three small houses of cylindrical clay walls and conical thatch roofs, set around an open fireplace and surrounded by low clay walls. Most recent houses are square with metal roofs, while many houses in the northwest are made of reed.

The early 19th century brought another period of upheaval, as peoples from the north, dislocated by slavery and the collapse of their local economies, moved to new territory. The Kololo were followed by the Ndebele. They were quickly succeeded by British colonialists and Boer settlers. The local rulers, notably the Tswana King Sechele, who ruled between 1829 and 1892, allied themselves with the British against the Boers. In a form of sub-contracted or privatized colonialism characteristic of the British Empire, Botswana was eventually brought under full British colonial control in 1890, by the British South Africa Company, who supervised the territory and which became known as Bechuanaland Protectorate.

RESEARCH [ARTICLE] Newsletter List of Newsletter Art and Craft of Botswana Sudha Satyawadi Freelance artist, reseacher and author working on ancient Indian art for the last thirty years. Placed by UNESCO, Paris as a specialist of intangible cultural heritage, she has worked on comparative study of rock and folk art focussing on paintings of India, Australia and South Africa. She is currently preparing a compendium of ancient art motifs, their origin, evolution and movement with regard to ancient art motifs of some of the European, African and Asian countries. Bushmen are born artists. Art is in their blood, but they need modern techniques and material. Kalahari desert in Botswana, the native land of Bushmen, is full of bushes. This barren land is of great credit to the hunters and gatherers, who have produced items of daily use and objects of art with limited, locally available material and resources. Photographs given in the article speak for themselves. The objects in the photographs are old and are drawn from the permanent collection of Ethnology department of National Museum and Art Gallery, Gaborone, Botswana. History of human race begins with the people of the region, now called Southern Africa. Trails from north and south, marked only by mysterious rock paintings and skeletal remains of 50,000 years ago, all converge into the Kalahari desert, now Botswana.

Introduction
  • Mr Speaker, I have the honour this afternoon to present the draft ninth National Development Plan (NDP 9) to this august House. The period covered by the current National Development Plan 8 comes to an end on the 31st March 2003. NDP 9 will, thereafter, cover the six year period from 1st April 2003 to 31st March 2009.
Mr Speaker, Botswana’s tradition of multi-year economic planning dates back to the time of Independence, with the drawing up of Botswana’s Transitional Plan for Social and Economic Development . Since then, successive National Development Plans have aimed at guiding the development of Botswana’s economy and drawing up programmes of public expenditure on recurrent and development projects, based on projected revenue resources of Government, including expected inflows of external assistance in the form of grants and concessional loans. Botswana and the world have undergone tremendous changes over the three and a half decades since Independence, but our basic approach to national development planning, drawn up in the context of the national principles of

Thatch harvested from palms and other native plants provides the roofs for many rondavals (round dwellings within a living compound). The thatching process is a very important task of village life and involves both the men and the women. Potlako L.P. Disele: "A Social and Cultural Approach to Restoration of Traditional Dress in Contemporary Botswana"
I am Potlako Lilian Peoesele Disele from Botswana. I am a Lecturer at the University of Botswana - Department of Home Economics Education. I graduated with an MA in Fashion and Textile Studies - De-Montfornt University in Leicester, and currently pursuing a PhD. My research interests are in the social and cultural aspects of dress. The baseline of my research is on the concepts, meanings, symbolic and understanding dress and its significance to Botswana culture. Botswana recognises the need to preserve national culture and historical heritage, therefore, a cultural approach of dress as a pursuit to achieving Botswana's national identity and restoration of cultural heritage through dress, new approaches to the teaching of clothing and textiles in schools and institution of high learning seem appropriate. I am grateful to the University of Botswana for the sponsorship.

Botswana is a landlocked country located in Southern Africa. It has land borders with Zimbabwe in the northeast, South Africa in the south and southeast and with Namibia to the west.
The country is a broad tableland with a mean altitude of 3,300 ft. A vast plateau of about 4,000 ft in height, extending from near Kanye north to the Zimbabwean border, divides the country into two distinct topographical regions.
The eastern region is hilly bush country and grassland (veld). To the west lie the Okavango Swamps and the Kalahari Desert. The only sources of permanent surface water are the Chobe River in the north, the Limpopo in the east, and the Okvango in the northwest. In seasons of heavy rainfall, floodwaters flow into the Makarikari Salt Pans and Lake Ngami.

The Okavango Delta of the Republic of Botswana is a large wetland surrounded by the Kalahari desert . The Okavango is a unique ecosystem and has large populations of African mammals, birds, and other animals. Conservationists have taken a great interest in the preservation of the Delta. Of less interest have been the 100,000 people who call the Delta home. This site is dedicated to the dissemination of information concerning the Okavango Delta Peoples.
Who are the Okavango Delta Peoples?
The Okavango Delta peoples consist of five ethnic groups, each with its own ethnic identity and language. They are Hambukushu (also known as Mbukushu, Bukushu, Bukusu, Mbukuschu, Ghuva, Haghuva), Dxeriku (Dceriku, Diriku, Gciriku, Gceriku, Giriku, Niriku), Wayeyi (Bayei, Bayeyi, Yei), Bugakwe (Kxoe, Khwe, Kwengo, Barakwena, G/anda) and Xanekwe (Gxanekwe, //tanekwe, River Bushmen, Swamp Bushmen, G//ani, //ani). The Hambukushu, Dxeriku, and Wayeyi are all Bantus who have traditionally engaged in mixed economies of millet/sorghum agriculture; fishing, hunting, and the collection of wild plant foods; and pastoralism. The Bugakwe and Xanekwe are Bushmen who have traditionally practiced fishing, hunting, and the collection of wild plant foods; Bugakwe utilized both forest and riverine resources while the Xanekwe mostly focused on riverine resources.
