Printer-friendly version E-mail this story to a friend Scientists turn farms into pharmacies by coaxing plants to produce valuable proteins. The dew we find on plants every morning may someday yield a rich harvest of important drugs and chemicals. In contrast to the public perception that dew on plants is just water collected from the air around them at dawn, it actually contains a protein-rich secretion. In a process biologists refer to as gluttaiton (pronounced glu-tay-tion), fluid is pushed out from the plant due to a buildup of pressure caused by reduced evaporation of moisture at night. Much of that liquid is water, but it also contains fluid from inside the plant, known as intercellular fluid. It turns out that valuable proteins reside in this intercellular fluid. Dr. Ilya Raskin and his colleagues at Rutgers are finding ways to manipulate the gluttation process. The scientists inserted a gene that prompts the plant to produce three foreign proteins in its intercellular fluid, which then are released in the dew. If this process is perfected for larger-scale production, it could lead to the development of plants that deliver proteins for drugs as varied as insulin, growth hormones and erythropoietin. Farms could someday replace half of the laboratory processes for synthesizing drugs, and therefore greatly reduce their manufacturing and purchasing costs.

Forthcoming ASBS Meetings
Plant Systematics in Australia - Where is it Going? Council is pleased to announce that at very short notice Ailsa Holland from the Queensland Herbarium has agreed to organise a two day conference in Brisbane to replace the conference planned for Perth in September which, due to unforseen circumstances, has had to be cancelled. The conference will be held at the Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens Toowong on 2nd and 3rd November and will be part of BRI's 150 th anniversary celebrations. You will appreciate that, given the short notice, details of the conference are still somewhat sketchy but Ailsa and her team are working hard to present an interesting program. The working title for the conference is Plant Systematics in Australia - Where is it Going?
In addition to the papers of a purely technical nature, it is hoped to have invited speakers cover topics such as the relevance of herbaria today, tertiary training in plant systematics in Australia and the rapidly expanding role of computers. In this age of molecular studies, the conference is keen to explore the use of additional tools such as cytology and developmental anatomy. Students in particular are encouraged to attend and ASBS will offer its normal financial support to students who deliver a talk or prepare a poster presentation. An expression of interest form is included in this Newsletter. As the program takes shape details will be available on the ASBS web page and we will keep members informed by e-mail when this information is available.

The History of Gardening: A Timeline
From Ancient Times to 1600
35,000 BCE (BCE = Before the Common Era or Christian-Roman Era)
Evidence from archeological sites (tools, corprolites) indicates that Homo Sapiens at the end of the Paleolithic period
had knowledge of many plants dervied from food gathering techniques. Different kids of fruits, nuts, and roots were
only gathered , not cultivated. 15,000 BCE
"The history of the origin of human civilizations and agriculture is, of course, much older than the documentation in the form of pyramids, inscriptions and bas-reliefs or tombs can tell us. A close acquaintance with cultivated plants and with the multitude of types and their differentiation into geographical groups as well as their frequently sharp physiological isolation from each other compel us to refer the very origin of cultivated plants to such remote epochs, where periods of 5-10,000 years such as concern archeologists represent but a brief moment."
