For the Flora Malesiana VI (FM VI) meetings, held in Los Banos, Philippines on September 20-24, 2004, ECO-SEA is a co-sponsor of the second Ethnobotany Session described at the FM VI website, Flora Malesiana VI Society of Ethnobiology In 2004 ECO-SEA co-sponsored the 27th Annual Meeting for Society of Ethnobiology at UC Davis, a three-day conference attended by First Nations representatives, academicians, ethnobiologists, restoration ecologists, environmentalists, watershed planners, practitioners and international scholars. ECO-SEA and conference committee members worked to achieve an equal participation of indigenous representatives in conference sessions, a historic first for the U.S.-based Society of Ethnobiology , a sister organization to the International Society of Ethnobiology. ECO-SEA will present part of our gender-focused ethnoecological research at the 2004 International Society of Ethnobiology meetings, to be held at the University of Canterbury, Kent, UK.

Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University
Founded in 1872 to increase our knowledge of woody plants through research and education, the Arboretum carries out that mission within its Olmsted-designed landscape by developing, curating, and maintaining a collection of living woody plants from around the world that are hardy in the Boston area. The Arboretum's herbarium of over 1.3 million wild-collected specimens, the majority from Asia, is maintained with other collections in the Harvard University Herbaria.
Chengdu Institute of Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences
Major areas of research at the Institute include the restoration of degraded ecological systems and the biological resources of the upper reaches of the Yangtze River and eastern Tibet. The Institute also conducts research in systematics and phylogeny, as well as in conservation biology, with studies focused on the relationships between biodiversity and environmental conditions and on the reproductive behavior of protected species.
Farlow Reference Library and Herbarium of Cryptogamic Botany
The Farlow Herbarium, administered as part of the Harvard University Herbaria, houses over a million specimens of lichenized and non-lichenized fungi, bryophytes, and algae. The collections are worldwide in scope, with particular strengths in the bryophytes and fungi of Asia.

The earth on which we live is inhabited by numerous plant species which produce essential materials for the support of humans, other animals and the great diversity of plants themselves. The science of botany is the study of plants including plant structure, function, systematics and ecology. Students study a wide variety of activities such as the relationship of plants to each other and their environment, plant growth and metabolism, classification and identification of plants, plant cell composition and plant heredity.
    The Program
The undergraduate program in botany at North Dakota State University is designed for students seeking a better understanding of plants and eventual careers in the plant sciences. The Department of Biological Sciences offers instruction in a number of different areas for majors and for students interested in the applied field of plant sciences. The botany curriculum allows students to become knowledgeable in botany and to pursue individual interests through elective course work. The introductory courses also are of interest to nonmajors seeking a more limited background in science.

The Botany Department holdings started as a collection of economically important plants and materials derived from plants that were displayed in the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. These collections have been added to over the years by researchers in the Department and through the acquisition of important collections from other institutions. Today, the Botany Department has a collection of 2.6 million carefully preserved specimens. These invaluable specimens are used by scientists from throughout the world to study many diverse topics including: investigating the medicinal plants used by indigenous peoples in tropical countries, monitoring the effect of air pollution on forests, finding potential new chemicals and medicines, and understanding the geological history of the earth. Santa Ana Botanic Garden remains true to its original mission
as a "botanical garden where California natives reign supreme."
Roots With two partners, John Bixby bought Rancho Los Alamitos in 1881 and raised southern California's first herd of purebred Holstein cattle. Once, when little Susanna was sick, her father led her pony into the house and to his daughter's bedside to cheer her up. In 1887, when he was 39 and his daughter 7, John Bixby died of undiagnosed appendicitis. Until her own death in 1906, John's widow, Susan, withdrew from society. She dressed herself and her daughter in black, head to toe, and entered a seemingly endless period of mourning. Susan Bixby and her children moved north to Berkeley, where Fred entered the University of California, Berkley (Class of '98), and Susanna enrolled as a day student in the newly established Miss Anna Head's school. Vacations, however, were spent at Rancho Los Alamitos. Following Fred's graduation, Susanna went east to Miss Hershey's School on Boston's Beacon Hill. No typical finishing school, Miss Hershey's included among its guest lecturers William James and George Santayana. In 1900, Susanna's life opened up still further with a tour of Europe followed by a trip around the world. In April 1904, at the Los Angeles Country Club, she was introduced to Dr. Ernest Albert Bryant. Eleven years her senior, Dr. Bryant was a friend of railroad magnate Henry E. Huntington. He served as Huntington's personal physician and also as surgical director for Huntington's Southern Pacific Railroad. During their courtship, Susanna an Dr. Bryant rode out to San Marino, where Huntington already was transforming his own ranch into a botanical garden. Married in 1904, the Bryants made their first home at 904 W. 28th St. in Los Angeles. Their daughter, named Susanna after her mother, was born in 1905. Ernest Albert Bryant Jr. was born two years later.

    BSc (Botany): (Qualification code SBDEGE)
This is a 3-year qualification consisting of 48 modules. Aim
This qualification is aimed at producing graduates who intend to become a botanist. A botanist can become a lecturer, a teacher, an ecologist, nature conservationist, ethno botanist. Alternatively, a botanist can become a researcher in governmental institutions or the private sector in one of the various sub disciplines in Botany. The qualification leads from a foundation in the necessary mathematical, physical and chemical skills to a sound background in all aspects of botany. With this qualification, the learners should have the theoretical and practical knowledge to solve problems in botany, but are recommended to continue their studies at honours level in the various sub disciplines of botany. Modules should be studied in the sequence indicated and prerequisites should be passed as they are encountered. Where there is a choice of elective modules, these should be selected in consultation with the head of the Botany department.

9 linear feet (7 boxes) HISTORICAL NOTE
The New York Botanical Garden Institute of Economic Botany (IEB) was founded in 1981 in order to focus a portion of the Garden's research on applied botany. Economic botany and its related discipline ethnobotany are concerned with the study of the relationship between plants and people. In addition to carrying out basic and applied research on useful and harmful plants, the IEB takes an active role in conservation activities and the preservation of biological diversity; helps to develop and strengthen economic botany programs at institutions in various tropical countries; and disseminates results to scientists and policy makers through its publications, workshops, and lectures. The IEB was founded by Ian Prance and directed by him until his departure from The New York Botanical Garden in 1988. Michael Balick was appointed as Prance's successor in 1988.
