TV LISTINGS ... CNEWS Smart Internet research can make homework a breeze By MARIAN PRESS Ontario Institute for Studies in Education The Internet has opened up a world of new resources to students working on school reports and projects or just trying to get through the daily grind of homework. But as most students and their parents have found, the Internet is a highly disorganized place and finding relevant information is not necessarily easy. Virtually anyone can publish a web page, making the barriers to publication non existent, so not only is there the quantity of information to worry about, there is the very real issue of quality. In this column you will find some of the best homework sites on the web, with an emphasis on those that are Canadian. But you may want to start with a visit to Kathy Schrock's Guide for Educators page on how to critically evaluate information on the Internet. Considered the expert in this area for young people, you can print out her Critical Evaluation Survey at the elementary, middle or secondary level or read one of the articles she has written on the subject. These critical evaluation skills will stand your children in good stead as they navigate their way around the uncharted world of the Internet.

Individual Tutoring The point of individual tutoring is to provide the student with highly customized interaction with the material they are having difficulty with. This type of interaction can be used to help failing students or improve the performance of students who wish to do better than they currently are or to help students prepare for AP exams. It can add structure and direction to a students approach to the topic or add detail and special relevance to the topic that isn't being provided in the classroom. The goal of individual tutoring is to provide the student with resources and information that is not provided in as accessible a manner elsewhere. The ultimate goal creates excitement, interest and energy in the student about the subject, which in turn leads to an increased capacity in the subject. Just can't seem to beable to get your homework done? You can do the work in class just fine but at home it all seems new different and unlike anything you've ever done before? Then getting individual help with your homework might be all that you need. I can help you to focus on the homework at hand, give you tips and tricks for getting all that dreaded homework done more quickly! The goal of homework help is to help you find out what is preventing your form succeeding on your own and fix those issues, so that after a few sessions you know that you can handle any homework assignment in any subject!

Summer 2002
Overview
For your plant research project, you will be selecting a flowering plant family and researching it. Homework will be assigned each week and will be due on Thursdays. Homework can be handwritten if readable by me, or typed. Each homework will be worth 10 points. The intent is to guide you through the research process by asking you to answer a limited set of questions each week. One fifth of the final (50 points) will consist of an essay summarizing the aspect of your particular plant family.
Homework 5: Fitting in
: First effort due on the discussion board by Thu morning Jul 25. Answers to my comments and questions due by Monday morning July 29. Read the presentations and discussions by others.
Homework 4: Smell the flowers
: final version due Thu Jul 18.
Homework 3: Secondary Plant Products
: due Wed morning July 3.
Homework 2: Taxonomic Space Exploration
: due Thu morning June 27.
I'm going to list folks and their research projects as they come in, so you can see what's already been picked and also be able to get in touch with someone whose interest overlaps yours. If the family has been chosen, choose another one unless the choice was limited to a subfamily. Then you can pick another different subfamily within that family. By "initial focus", I just mean what got you started, not what keeps you there. Name Family Initial Focus Homework 1 Talitha Liliaceae (subfamily with Hostas) Hostas, horticultural
