DEPARTMENT OF BOTANY THE DEPARTMENT The department of Botany at this university started functioning with effect from February 1, 1967. It was the fourth department in the Faculty of Science being started after Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. Presently, the department has one Professor Emeritus, 1 Emeritus Fellow, 5 Professors, 6 Readers and one Reader cum curator. During the first academic year in 1967-68, twenty students were admitted to M.Sc. (Previous) course and now the student's strength has been raised to 25. The students have a choice for opting one of the following specializations: Since its inception, the department has been engaged in imparting instructions at Postgraduate level and guiding students for M. Phil/Ph.D. Degree. So far, the department has produced about 750 M.Sc. students in the subject of Botany. M. Phil. course was introduced in 1976 academic session with the admission of 10 students. So far 45 students have been awarded Ph.D. degree. Most of the students of this department have taken up teaching as profession. Some of them have gone in for higher studies, research jobs and administrative services also (I.F.S., P.C.S. etc.). Pedagogy Is each topic or concept within a topic treated in adequate depth to realistically expect students to understand it? Nature of Science The concepts and topics related to an understanding of the Nature of Science were thoroughly taught. Using repeated references to the history of evolutionary thought, the evolutionary literature, the scientists and research programs that produced this literature, and the ongoing debates between those scientists, the course provided a very real, robust picture of how science proceeds. As Duschl suggests (1990), this epistemological approach to scientific knowledge enhances students' understandings of the scientific concepts as it provides a portrait of the development of science as a human endeavor. The course instructor also stressed the nature of science through his deductive approach to teaching scientific concepts. This deductive approach took the form of defining the concept, then describing a biological situation (a description taken from the research literature), and having students analyze the situation based upon the concepts presented in the course. Finally, the instructor would explain how the concept explained the data and where it fell short. This technique has two benefits; it provides a very real context for a concept, and it demonstrates how concepts are closely tied to evidence. The living environment Specific concepts from the sections Diversity of Life and Heredity were addressed as they directly related to evolution. The instructor assumed a level of biological literacy on the part of students in the class and the teaching of these concepts (classification, sorting of genetic information, mutations) was structured upon that knowledge.

TEACHING ACTIVITIES The faculty of the Biozentrum participates in teaching at all levels, offering introductory courses as well as courses related to their scientific specialities. An important contribution to teaching is made by lecturers from other institutions in the Basel region, mainly the Basel Institute for Immunology, the Friedrich Miescher Institute and the research divisions of the Basel pharmaceutical industry. The Diploma in Biology II Sixty to 80 students currently enter the program each year. We are faced with the problem that the lecture halls are too small for some of the courses. A larger lecture hall is planned in a projected new building adjacent to the Biozentrum. However, this will not be available before the end of 1999, and no interim solution is in sight. The PhD program The Biozentrum offers graduate programs leading to the PhD degree in biochemistry, biophysics, cell biology, genetics, and microbiology. The degree requires participation in advanced courses, submission of a dissertation to the Faculty of Sciences, and terminates with a comprehensive oral examination. The program typically takes 3 years to complete. Most graduate teaching is done in the framework of a series of 3 year, theme-oriented cycles of courses. There are at present 9 of these cycles with a total of 43 independent courses. A list of the dissertations submitted during the period covered by this report is on pages Seminars in the Biozentrum The Biozentrum has a formal seminar series, the "Biozentrumsseminare", planned several months in advance and generally given by more senior scientists. Many other seminars are also given that cannot be fitted into this formal series either because they are arranged at short notice or because of scheduling conflicts. We call these "Informelle Seminare". They are, however, just as widely announced as the formal ones and many speakers are surprised to find themselves giving their "informal" seminar to a packed auditorium. These seminars play an important role in the life of the Biozentrum. The are perhaps the most important post-graduate educational activity that we offer, and many graduate student has secured his first post-doctoral position while sharing a post-seminar drink with the speaker.
