Plantwatch is a program which asks students and the general public to observe flowering times for "key indicator" plant species and to report these dates electronically (over the Internet) or by mail. These indicator plants flower largely in response to heat accumulation (degree-days), so after warm winters and springs they flower earlier than average. These phenology (study of the seasonal timing of life cycle events) data, collected over many years, provide information on average spring development time for different areas, and also show how much earlier or later each succeeding season is. They help in seeing how the biota is responding to climate change. By participating, observers have fun and learn about the natural environment and biodiversity. Wisconsin Fast Plants

Ever So Slowly, Colleges Start to Count Work With Technology in Tenure Decisions
The key may be a growing movement for peer review of Web sites and online teaching materials By JEFFREY R. YOUNG Don't waste time teaching online or laboring over electronic course enhancements unless you've already climbed to the top of the tenure-and-promotion ladder. Review committees may not take technology work seriously, so stick to traditional academic activities, like publishing journal articles. That's the warning Gary Bradshaw heard from colleagues when he told them about his work on ePsych, an online resource to help introductory psychology students. He already had tenure when he started the online project, but he found out the hard way that the advice was sound. He was twice turned down for a promotion to full professor at Mississippi State University, where he is an associate professor of psychology. (The chairman of the psychology department, Stephen B. Klein, said he could not discuss personnel issues.) Mr. Bradshaw feels that work creating online teaching materials such as sophisticated Web sites or multimedia tools designed to help students slips through the cracks of the three traditional categories used in promotion: teaching, research, and service.

Experiential learning in the forms of teaching and research can be extremely rewarding for undergraduate students. These experiences allow students to put classroom knowledge into practice and explore potential career paths. Teaching and research settings frequently present rich opportunities to build leadership skills such as team-work, problem-solving, getting along with others, analytical skills, time-management, writing, speaking, work ethic, and integrity. Perhaps most importantly, both teaching and research pose significant, open-ended challenges to students that provide opportunities for high achievement and excellence.

DEPARTMENT OF BOTANY
INTRODUCTION The department of Botany offers both Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes in various disciplines of plant sciences including: plant taxonomy, plant physiology, plant pathology, plant structure and function, plant geography, plant biotechnology, plant ecology, plant genetics, phycology, microbiology and mycology. There is a wide selection of courses that have been designed and are taught to equip the graduates and postgraduates with practical solutions to most of the problems existing in various areas of plant sciences. More details and other requirements are as listed at various levels of study, i.e. undergraduate and postgraduate levels. UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMMES The Department of Botany aims to achieve excellence in teaching and research in the areas of plant sciences. It aims to equip graduates with appropriate knowledge and skills in plant sciences and to understand the plant function and relationship with other plant sciences.

Teaching is supported by the laboratories and greenhouses on Campus, the College Botanic Garden and the internationally recognised Herbarium. Most courses are derived from active research lines and emphasis is placed on the student's own research project in the final year. There are also opportunities for access to complementary courses in other departments. Study Abroad The Botany Department has links with a large number of universities and research centres in Europe and tropical developing countries. Through these contacts, it may be possible to undertake some of your studies elsewhere. In 2001, the undergraduate field trip took the form of an expedition to Guyana; in 2004 the undergraduate field trip was to Gran Canaria island, and in 2006 we plan to visit Thailand. Opportunities also exist for tropical ecology study through the Department's membership of the Tropical Biology Association. Assessment Assessment is by a combination of in-course assessment and examination.
