In the first place do you know what a botanist is? A botanist is a scientist who studies the biology of plants. Studying plants is important because without them you would be cold, naked, and hungry. Also we think plants are attractive so we use them to decorate our homes, both inside and out, and use them to celebrate special events from birth to death. People who call themselves botanists usually study basic plant biology, which can lead to work in agriculture, forestry, and horticulture. My job is at a university, so I teach students about botany and I teach students how to do research, how to study plants. That tells you a lot about how I spend my days, although it is hard to decide what is typical. I give lectures about economically important plants, plant diversity, plant taxonomy, plant identification, and fungi. So I must prepare materials and lecture notes for class. I also teach laboratories and field trips where students get hands on experience with the subjects of their studies. Laboratories and field trips take lots of preparation. Our university has a teaching collection of plants, about 50,000 dried plants filed in an herbarium, a collection that I manage and care for. A greenhouse is filled with living plant specimens for teaching, and I must know just about everything in the collection and how to use it for teaching. We have many rare and exotic species; some I acquired from exotic places on my travels.

Fun Science Fair Projects!
Janice VanCleave The title of this article is viewed by some people as a contradiction of terms. Too often science fair projects are dreaded by teachers, librarians, and parents, as well as by the students. This is an unfortunate situation usually resulting from a lack of instructional materials to allow students, with a minimum of assistance depending on their age, to develop the project themselves. Science is a search for answers. Science projects are good ways to learn more about science as students search for answers to specific problems. Instructional materials are needed to give guidance and provide ideas, but students must do their part in the search by planning experiments, finding and recording information related to the problem, and organizing the collected data to find an answer. Presenting the project at a science fair can be a rewarding experience if the exhibit has been properly prepared. Trying to assemble a project overnight, however, only results in frustration and a poor grade. The student is also cheated out of the fun of being a science detective. Solving a scientific mystery, like solving a detective mystery, requires planning and the careful collecting of data. Students should be encouraged to start their projects with curiosity and a desire to learn something new. The following sections provide suggestions of how students can get started on this scientific quest. I divide a sample project into its parts and provide a format that can be used to guide students through other projects, regardless of the topic.

Research
My research interests focus on four ecological/taxonomic areas: 1) taxonomic relationships among the intermediate oaks (Protobalanus), geographical, ecological, and hybridization factors in the variation of Quercus chrysolepis; 2) reproductive biology and diversity of the Ione buckwheat (Eriogonum apricum), a rare edaphic endemic; 3) ecology of selected rare species of the Santa Cruz sand hills; 4) the oaks and Polygonaceae of the San Juan Basin (4-corners area in the southwest).
