About Hawai'i's Botanical Gardens
The term "botanical garden" has been applied to gardens ranging from research gardens associated with major botanical institutes to municipal gardens which support little scientific activity. In addition, public and private "botanical gardens" exist which contain superb plant collections, but do not provide labeling or maintain records on the plants in the collection. The 1989 Botanic Gardens Conservation Strategy published by World Wildlife Fund and the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources defined a botanical garden as a "garden containing scientifically ordered and maintained collections of plants, usually documented and labelled, and open to the public for the purposes of recreation, education and research." Botanical gardens in Hawai'i play an active role in the preservation of our native flora. The Amy Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden Honolulu Botanical Gardens Harold H. Lyon Arboretum

gardens on Kauai and Maui.
http://www.ntbg.org/
Mission Statement: Under its Congressional charter , the privately-funded National Tropical Botanical Garden administers gardens of extraordinary beauty and historical significance, advancing scientific research, public education, and plant conservation. The National Tropical Botanical Garden is dedicated to the conservation of tropical plant diversity, particularly rare and endangered species. Medicine, food, shelter - the potential uses of many plant species are not known. Yet they are becoming extinct at an alarming rate. Located in the only tropical and sub-tropical regions in the United States, the gardens and preserves of the NTBG are "Noah's Arks" for this threatened plant life. NTBG's work in scientific research, plant exploration, propagation, and education is all supported by contributions from people like you.

88. Garvan Woodland Gardens - The University Of Arkansas' Botanical Garden
An amalgam of forestland and botanical garden located in the picturesque Ouachita Mountain terrain, these gardens feature a nature preserve, children's adventure garden, and much more. Arkansas.
http://www.garvangardens.com/
What began as a petite, delicate woman's dream of transforming her 210-acre wooded peninsula on Lake Hamilton into a world-class botanical garden has been meticulously converted into a tangible reality by a team of professional designers and craftsmen, such as internationally recognized architect and native Arkansan, E. Fay Jones, who designed the Garvan Pavilion that serves as the center of activity in the Gardens. Verna Cook Garvan , described as a brilliant businesswoman by those acquainted with her, realized she could not solely succeed in preserving her private woodland garden or provide an accessible place of repose for the people of Arkansas without help. She made a wise decision in 1985 to donate the land under a trust agreement to the University of Arkansas School of Architecture. She maintained control of the property and continued to develop it until her death in 1993 when the U of A department of landscape architecture, a division of the School of Architecture, began the daunting task of documenting every plant species and the quantity of each. In the years to follow, work began on a strategic 10-year master plan that has served as a road map for existing and future expansion at the Gardens. Construction on what is now visible in the Gardens began in 2000 with a much-celebrated grand opening held in April 2002.

90. Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden - History
and history of the founding of the gardens......
http://www.htbg.com/about.html
ABOUT HAWAII TROPICAL BOTANICAL GARDEN Aloha and welcome to Onomea Bay and the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden! This "garden in a valley on the ocean" is located off of Highway 19 on the lush Hamakua Coast, 8 1/2 miles north of Hilo in the sheltered Onomea Valley on the Big Island of Hawaii.. In Hawaii, onomea means "the best place." And indeed, no better place exists. The Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden is a museum of living plants that attracts photographers, gardeners, botanists, scientists, and nature lovers from around the world. The Garden's collection of tropical plants is international in scope. Over 2,000 species, representing more than 125 families and 750 genera, are found in this one-of-a-kind garden. The 40-acre valley is a natural greenhouse, protected from buffeting tradewinds and blessed with fertile volcanic soil. Some of the Garden's enormous mango and coconut palm trees are over 100 years old. Tropical plants that struggle to grow in homes and gardens across America reach gigantic proportions here. The Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden's mission is to serve as a nature preserve and sanctuary. The Garden is dedicated to the collection and display of the world's tropical plants, and to the education of both children and adults about the plight of the world's rainforests. At a time when rainforest plants are disappearing at an alarming rate, the Garden is working to preserve as many species as possible for the benefit of future generations.

Palm House Botanic Gardens, Belfast City
The Palm House is one of the earliest examples of a curvilinear and cast iron glasshouse. Its construction was initiated by the Belfast Botanical and Horticultural Society in the 1830s. The two wings were completed in 1840, and were built by Richard Turner of Dublin, who later built the Great Palm House at Kew Gardens. Over the years, the Palm House has acquired a reputation for good plant collections. The cool wing houses all year round displays of colour and scent using plants such as geranium, fuchsia, begonia and bulb displays. The stove wing and dome area contain a range of temperate and tropical plants with particular emphasis on species of economic value. The gardens contain the Tropical Ravine, Rose Gardens and fine herbacious borders.
