The power of grafting - V
My grafted Lophophora williamsii (SB 854; Starr Co, Tx) is on a roll – it is now flowering for the fourth time this year.
Lophophora williamsii flower
I self-pollinated the flower and collected some pollen for a Lophophora williamsii v. jourdaniana that will flower soon – allegedly this variety is self-incompatible i.e. it requires outcross pollination. I hope the pollen will stay viable in the refrigerator for a week or two.

The power of grafting - IV
For the third time this year my grafted Lophophora williamsii (SB 854; Starr Co, Tx) is flowering – quite an accomplishment from a plant only 18 months from seed (sowed February 29, 2004). This flower was also self-pollinated.

If you would like to invite Mary Soderstrom to speak to your group about the gardens she visited while researching this book, contact V©hicule Press at marketing@vehiculepress.com. Recreating Eden: A Natural History of Botanical Gardens is more than pictures of beautiful flowers and landscape arrangements; more than a guide to some of the loveliest sites in the world; more, even, than a short and lively history of the development of the idea of a botanical garden. It is the story of mankind's search for the right place, a search which has been going on since our ancestors wandered on the plains of East Africa. Because of this, the book will appeal to the amateur historian and philosopher as well as the garden-lover.
Last revised June, 2004 To find out more about Mary Soderstrom

"A splendid work that traces in detail in a way that is both historically and botanically interesting the diverse ways in which botanical gardens have developed at different periods of time and in different countries. Excellent research, and an outstanding writing style."

We are the only arboretum and botanical garden in the USA staffed entirely by volunteers. 375 dedicated individuals maintain the trees, plants and shrubs, and seed-gifts which are all labeled throughout the garden. A special thank you to all of our guests and volunteers! In 2004 we had guests come from 37 of the 50 states and also had visitors from Europe, Africa and South America. Our guestbook logged 75,000 during our 2004 season. We had 375 volunteers reporting more than 14,500 hours in 2004. Our green team alone spent over 11,000 hours planning and planting the gardens for 2005. Improvements are planned for 2005, including expanding the Formal English Garden, continuing work of the Japanese Garden including planting 90 trees, and adding new gardens near our new gate. A new sign will span the pillars of the gate. A stone memorial book now helps identify the Mr. McGregor's Children's Garden. Come visit us for a few moments or a few hours. Join us for our Sunday at Six concert series all summer long. Donations accepted. About Us:
