And there is no doubt that the religions that are so involved here had neglected in the period of more than forty years since the Second World War to engage in mourning, honestly confess the crimes which had been committed by all sides in the course of the centuries, and ask one another for mutual forgiveness....I think there can be no peace among the nations without peace among the religions!" A brief history of Yugoslavia:
The Yugoslavia which emerged from World War II was a six republic federation. From north-west to south east, the political entities were Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro and Macedonia. At various times during the past millennium, the country know known as Yugoslavia, and its surrounding countries, straddled the borders of three faith groups: Islam, Orthodox Christianity, and Roman Catholicism. Various sources give conflicting stories of the area's past. The following is our initial attempt at describing the history of Yugoslavia. Although this data came from usually reliable sources, we are uncertain about its reliability. We will attempt to improve this in the near future:

Given its symbolic role in the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand and its extensive use in Serbian propaganda justifying genocide in Bosnia, such an omission is troubling. Twenty-Five Lectures on Modern Balkan History
Lecture No. 12: Bosnia-Hercegovina and the failure of reform in Austria-Hungary
Previous lecture Complete list of lectures Next lecture Revolution and reform represented two approaches to change in late nineteenth century Europe. For the Habsburgs, like the Ottomans, revolutionary nationalism was not acceptable as a solution to political and social problems. Instead, Austria-Hungary's leaders expected that reforms would bring economic progress, out of which would flow personal prosperity and ultimately political stability. Lecture 11 showed that reform efforts lagged and ultimately failed in the Ottoman Empire, because Ottoman leaders too often regarded reformers as outsiders usurping the power of the proper Turkish authorities. "Reform" meant Western ideas and Western innovations, forced onto an unwilling Ottoman establishment. Denied the help of the Ottoman state, Western European reformers (even the leaders of the Great Powers) got nowhere. In the case of Austria-Hungary, reform had no such handicap. Austria-Hungary was a "Western" state: ideas that were foreign novelties in Turkey were the norm in the Habsburg Empire. The Habsburgs had accepted legal equality, religious toleration, applied science and rational government during the Enlightenment and the reign of Joseph II. Given a chance to apply these Western notions in southeastern Europe, the Habsburg state in theory should have rapidly demonstrated the value of reform and the power of "modern" Western society to solve problems of Balkan backwardness.

History of Bosnia and Herzegovina
from the origins to 1992
A lot of soldiers serving here believe Bosnia and Herzegovina is a young state, created by the General Framework Agreement for Peace (GFAP) at the end of 1995. The truth is quite different. BiH has a long and distinguished history. The history if BiH is outlined briefly below in 6 chapters covering the period from the third century BC to 1992.
Suggested reading: General Framework Agreement for Peace. The Dayton Proximity Talks culminated in the initialing of a General Framework Agreement for Peace (GFAP) in August 1995. The text of the GFAP is here The Fall of Yugoslavia by Misha Glenny, Penguin Books, London, 1996. This book covers events in the Former Yugoslavia from 1992 to 1996. To End a War by Richard Holbrooke, Random House, New York, 1999. These very readable and critically acclaimed memoirs cover the diplomacy behind the Dayton talks, the General Framework Agreement for Peace (GFAP) and the background to the Implementation Force (IFOR), the forerunner to the Stabilisation Force (SFOR).

The original setlers of geograhical regions of Bosnia and Herzegovina are SERBS. They were, till recently, the LARGEST ethnic group there. WHO ARE MUSLIMS OF BOSNIA?
    Excerpts from different Encyclopediae
    Bosnia was Serbian land
The Serbs settled in Bosnia in 7th century. There they formed one of Serbian kingdoms. Hundreds of years later, in mid-15th century the Turks occupied Bosnia. They rulled it for more than four centuries. Some of the Christian Serbs of Bosnia converted to Islam, the religion of the foreign oppressor. Who are Bosnians, Bosniaks?
Today's Muslims of Bosnia want to usurp the name - "Bosnian". Actually the Serbs and Croats are also indigenous people of Bosnia. They are also "Bosnians". How was the term invented?
And why are the Muslims of Bosnia (the Serbs and Croats who converted to Islam) offended to be called "Turks"? Only recently it was their prefered name. Muslims oppressed Christians in Bosnia
Not only were Bosnian Muslims quislings of the hated oppressor who ruled Bosnia through tyranny, they outdid the Turks in oppressing remaining Christians of Bosnia. Learn about "The tax in blood" the Turks levied on their Christian subjects.
Centuries of Islamic tyranny The myth of the Muslim tolerance
Is Islam a tolerant religion? Are we all from Mars? How can anyone delete the horror of Muslim oppression over Christians and Jews which lasted for centuries and stretched over continents?

The reason was mainly economical. The muslim religion was tolerant against others and the non-believers only had to pay higher taxes. By changing religion they also could keep their political influence. War has occured several times in the area and now and then hard feelings between the ethnical groups has boiled up. After World War II President Tito unified the whole area and the Republic of Jugoslavia (South Slavia) was established. In the end of 1980, when both communism and economy was falling a new war between the ethnical groups broke out. With thanks to Ass Professor Villu Tamul, University of Tartu
