During Ottoman rule, many Bosnians converted from Christianity in favor of Islam. Bosnia was under Ottoman rule until 1878, when it was given to Austria-Hungary as a colony. While those living in Bosnia came under rule by the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, South Slavs in Serbia and elsewhere were calling for a South Slav state. World War I began when Serb nationalist Gavrilo Princip assassinated the Archduke Ferdinand in Sarajevo. Following the Great War, Bosnia became part of the South Slav state of Yugoslavia, only to be given to Nazi-puppet Croatia in World War II. During this period, many atrocities were committed against Jews, Serbs, and others who resisted the occupation. The Cold War saw the establishment of the Communist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia under Josip Broz Tito, and the reestablishment of Bosnia as a republic with its medieval borders within the federation of Yugoslavia. Yugoslavia's unraveling was hastened by the rise of Slobodan Milosevic to power in 1986. Milosevic's embrace of Serb nationalism led to intrastate ethnic strife. Slovenia and Croatia both declared independence from Yugoslavia in 1991. In February 1992, the Bosnian Government held a referendum on independence. Bosnia's parliament declared the republic's independence on April 5, 1992. However, this move was opposed by Serb representatives who favored remaining in Yugoslavia. Bosnian Serbs, supported by neighboring Serbia, responded with armed resistance in an effort to partition the republic along ethnic lines to create a "greater Serbia." Full recognition of its independence by the United States and most European countries occurred on April 7, and Bosnia-Herzegovina was admitted to the United Nations on May 22, 1992.

Bosnia became the centre of one of Europe's blackest memories in modern history as Serbs, Croats, and Muslims all fought to expand or keep their territories within Bosnia, and carve out their own states within a state.

Despite the highly visible scars of war, Sarajevo is today a town that bursts with energy. Even so, a stroll along Sarajevo's Miljacka River can be sobering, given the obvious destruction that so recently took place here. Walk long enough and you'll be depressed enough to handle what you'll find on the wall of the one-room City Museum: a plaque, probably attached to the wall (it gets stolen from time to time), commemorating an event that will never be forgotten. On this corner, WWI began. The plaque bears the footprints of Gavrilo Princip, the Bosnian Serb youth who in June 1914, on a blisteringly hot summer Sarajevo afternoon, decided he would make his mark for the Serbian cause. Princip shot dead Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian empire, and his wife Sophia at point blank range as the royal couple rode through the streets in a convertible touring car. Ferdinand was in Sarajevo to inspect Austrian troops stationed there. Bosnia, and its sister province Herzegovina, were former Turkish possessions that had been annexed by Austria-Hungary in 1908. Many of its Serb inhabitants bitterly resented not being allowed to join Serbia, their native state. Princip was arrested, but political tensions were so high between Austria-Hungary and Serbia that conflict seemed inevitable. No one could have guessed just how unthinkably violent that conflict would be.

      Early History
The area was part of the Roman province of Illyricum. Bosnia was settled by Serbs in the 7th cent.; it appeared as an independent country by the 12th cent. but later at times acknowledged the kings of Hungary as suzerains. Medieval Bosnia reached the height of its power in the second half of the 14th cent., when it controlled many surrounding territories. Bosnia also annexed the duchy of Hum, which, however, regained autonomy in 1448 and became known as Herzegovina. During this period the region was weakened by religious strife among Roman Catholics, Orthodox, and Bogomils . Thus disunited, Bosnia fell to the Turks in 1463. Herzegovina held out until 1482, when it too was occupied and joined administratively to Bosnia. The nobility and a large part of the peasantry accepted Islam.
      Foreign Domination
Under Turkish rule, Bosnia and Herzegovina's economy declined. Physical remoteness facilitated the retention of medieval social structure, including serfdom (remnants of which lasted until the 20th cent.). Refusal by the Turkish to institute reforms led to a peasant uprising (1875) that soon came to involve outside powers and led to the

    History
The Medieval Kingdom of Bosnia did not last long after the defeat of the Serbian and Bosnian feudal nobility at the battle of Kosovo in 1389. Ottoman armies thus found their way open to further expansion into Europe. A long campaign against the Christian armies resulted in the conquest of Bosnia in 1463 and of Herzegovina in 1483. For the next 400 years, until the beginning of Austrian rule, Bosnia found itself relatively isolated from Europe, though the eventual capital, Sarajevo, became an administrative and trading nexus, oriented towards Istanbul. A series of caravanserai, known as hans, ultimately connected Bosnia to Persia and China along the Silk Route. A series of hans to the west connected Bosnia to Dubrovnik and Venice. During this period, many Bosnian Christians converted to Islam, in some cases to escape the taxes placed on Christians and in other cases to retain their social position as nobility. As Ottoman power began to wane and Turkey began to be pushed out of Europe, Bosnia became an important frontier for the Turkish state, although an increasingly unstable one. By the 19th century, much of Bosnia had become turbulent and anarchic; peasant revolts, especially by the Christian peasantry, were a constant threat to stability. In the meantime, Serbia, to the east of Bosnia, won independence from Turkey and established a kingdom. Repeated attempts at reform in the Ottoman Empire were unsuccessful; revolts grew in Bosnia until Austria-Hungary felt compelled to step in. The treaties of San Stefano and of Berlin in 1878 proposed that Austria occupy Bosnia until such time that order and prosperity could be restored.

By Stephanie Persin The first Jews did not immigrate to Bosnia until the Spanish Inquisition and expulsion in 1492. Jews enjoyed a relatively peaceful existence in the region that is now Bosnia-Herzegovina. They participated in trade and daily life, although, like other non-Muslims in the area, they were treated as second-class citizens. Jews could not, for example, wear " Muslim " clothing and they could not ride horses in the town. They could not carry weapons and were required to pay a high poll tax. In the 16th century, anti-Semitic feelings became more apparent throughout the community and many Jews had to move from their original city quarter to Sarajevo. This continued through the next couple of centuries and, in 1833, the Jewish population in Bosnia was threatened with execution. The Jews escaped death by paying a large sum of money to high officials. In 1839, however, new civil rights laws were introduced into the region. The living situation for Jews improved as community members participated again in trade and were even elected to office. The area of Bosnia-Herzegovina was taken over by the Austrian-Hungary empire in 1878. Bosnia had before been occupied by mostly Sephardim, but with the Austrian-Hungarian influence came many
