Lying at the heart of the western Balkans, the area that now comprises Bosnia and Herzegovina has been a part of numerous empires from the Romans to the socialist Yugoslav federation. Through the centuries, the region has developed unique architecture, foods and cultures that reflect the mixing of peoples and ideas. It is a country where the past - both good and bad - remains an integral part of everyday life. Coming out of the violent war that both caused and was caused by the break-up of Yugoslavia, Bosnia and Herzegovina has sought since 1995 to rebuild a devastated infrastructure and create a political system that recognizes difference but seeks to create democratic norms and processes.

Pero Mandic in the garden of his home, in the Serbian village where he now lives. Photo: Joseph Cabon
There are two apple trees in the small garden and hens scratching in a wire coop. It's next to a low white-washed house built on the side of a hill and from the edge of the vegetable bed you can see a jumble of red tiled roofs, the village of Feketic with its skyline dominated by two huge churches. The dry earth is planted with spring onions, peas and parsley. Dogs are barking and cocks are crowing.
It's a village garden like tens of thousands of others in northern Serbia except for one thing: under the apple trees, paintings have been set on simple easels of long sticks lashed together. The canvases are covered with images of violence, intricately painted figures and animals, the dead and the dying in landscapes of burning red.
Pero Mandic, who painted them, stands by. 'Now you see why I became an artist,' he says.

A Brief History of Bosnia-Herzegovina
by Andras Riedlmayer, Harvard University Area 19,741 sq. mi. / 51,130 sq. km (about the size of West Virginia; 1/4 larger than Switzerland). Picturesque mountain scenery (Bosnia's capital Sarajevo hosted the 1984 Winter Olympics), much of it covered by forests; some coal and minerals, no oil. Bosnia's traditional borders, established in the medieval period, are: the Sava River (in the N), the Drina River (E/SE), and the Dinaric Alps (in the W). Herzegovina ("the Duchy") is the historical name for the country's southwestern region (around the town of Mostar). Located in the heart of Europe (as the crow flies, Sarajevo is closer to Rome than Milan is). Population Until the late 19th century, people of all three faiths identified themselves simply as Bosnians. Most Bosnians today are in fact highly secularized, and about a third of all urban marriages in Bosnia in recent decades have been between partners from different religious/ethnic backgrounds. While there were some villages in the countryside where one group or the other predominated, Bosnia's towns and cities have traditionally been the shared home of people from all ethnic and religious groups. The latter include Jews, who found a haven in the tolerant city of Sarajevo in 1492, following their expulsion from Spain. Unlike Jews in Venice and elsewhere in Europe, Sarajevo's Jews were not confined to a ghetto. The city's principal mosques, its synagogues and Christian churches are all located in close proximity to each other, a visible sign of the intermingled public and private lives of its ethnic and religious communities.

CROATIAN CULTURAL HERITAGE OF BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA IN THE PRE-ISLAMIC PERIOD
EARLY PERIOD
On their arrival on today's territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Croats search their first shelters in the ruins of Roman buildings; late classical refuges serve as their strongholds for the most necessary defense. Their early traces are found not far from Bijeljina, in Vrbljani near Kljuc and on Gradina around great fields of Western Bosnia. Some time after, the Croats begin to construct their primitive redoubts in plains, called today "gradiste". One of these, protected with dike and paling is found in Ukrina valley near the town of Derventa, and another one in Mahovljani near Banja Luka. The number of discovered edifices is not great. Among them are church on Panik near Bileca, one of the churches in Zavala, on Vidostak near Stolac and in Vrutci near Sarajevo. Rectangular shrinesand on the external walls are common characteristics of all the churches. The church on Panik was covered with frescoes, while the church in Vrutci was equipped with stone furniture enriched with interlaced ornamentation. According to unreliable information, a round six apse edifice was built in Rogacici near Blazuj and although ciborium dates from somewhat later period, the church could be included in the same group of churches. The ruins of the church in Lisicici containing a small apse and two apses on the eastern wall can also be ascribed to the late pre-Romanesque period.

Sloga Republika Srpska while the KCD is the largest single party in the Muslim-Croat Federation. There has been some friction within the Federation but so far it has held together as a political entity. The 2002 elections were also notable for the fact that they were the first to have been organized domestically; previous polls had been administered and supervised by the international community.
Government Under the terms of the Dayton deal (see above), Bosnia is divided into two distinct entities: Republika Srpska and the Muslim-Croat Federation. A central government, based in Sarajevo, is responsible for national functions including foreign, external trade and finance policies. It consists of a three-person executive Presidency and a National Assembly in which two thirds of the seats are reserved for Federation candidates and one third for Serbs. In addition

ADVERTISING INFORMATION Banja Luka - Culture Banja Luka is the biggest town, economical and cultural centre of the Republic of Srpska and the second biggest town in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Before the war the area of Banja Luka, which covers 1239 square kilometres, had population of 195000. Today, the population has reached 237000, out of which 65000 are refugees from other areas.
Banja Luka is spreads over both banks of the Vrbas river, in the tectonic valley that spreads North East - South West, which is separated by the Laktasi Ravine from the Lijevce Valley in Posavina. The valley is longish, 5 kilometres wide at the widest part. The city has developed at the Southern part of the valley, at the place where the river Vrbas leaves the canyon and goes into the valley. The river flows almost through the centre of the town. The city itself covers approximately 150 square kilometres, and the co-ordinates are 44o46'27'' LAT and 17o11'44'' LON. The average altitude is 164 meters.
Banja Luka is an important crossroads and a passing point for many railway lines. With the airport and the harbour on river Sava in the town of Gradiska, 50 kilometres away, Banja Luka is a centre that contacts the Adriatic Sea with the Central Europe and Western Republic of Srpska with the Eastern Europe and Serbia.
