http://www.coenosium.com/text800/conifers_for_bonsai.htm
CONIFERS FOR BONSAI Coenosium Gardens has been selling plants for twenty years. Located throughout the nursery are many plants that are easily overlooked due to their small stature. Upon closer inspection, many of these little plants have thick trunks, small foliage, and shallow roots. Such plants are very suitable for bonsai. Several basic characteristics should be considered when selecting potential bonsai plants. Heavy trunk development and fissured bark at a young age, miniature foliage, multiple bud development, and a growth rate that may be easily stunted are among the most important ones. EASILY ROOTED CONIFERS FOR BONSAI Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Hage’- This cultivar grows more slowly than Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Nana’ and is relatively undistinguishable from it as a young plant. As a young plant, ‘Hage’ or ‘Nana’ is an excellent choice for mame or bonsai. The small foliage, slow growth, spreading branches, and rapid trunk development all combine to create an excellent miniature tree. Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Kosteri’- A slow-growing form with horizontal, twisted foliage occurring in layers, ‘Kosteri’ is quite popular with some bonsai growers. Growing upright, this plant can become a most attractive formal or informal bonsai.

OVERVIEW
Carmona retusa is a popular ornamental plant cultivated in Hawai'i as a hedge or specimen plant. On Maui, C. retusa is observed in residential plantings, mostly in low elevation neighborhoods, such as Kahului, Wailuku, Lahaina, Paia, Haiku, and Kihei. Seedlings and naturalized plants are also commonly observed in landscaping areas and wild semi-wild areas nearby plantings. In one area in Waiehu, C. retusa forms a dense shrubby understory in a kiawe ( Prosopis pallida ) forest. This plant is fairly widespread on Maui and is probably beyond the eradication stage. Future efforts should be aimed at monitoring, preventing infestations in natural areas, and educating the public about harmful plants that spread beyond the confines of the garden. TAXONOMY Family: Boraginaceae (Heliotrope family) (Lorence et al. 1995, Wagner et al. 1999).

Bonsai Plant
A work of art, a hobby, an indoor gardening project. However you look at growing and maintaining Bonsai plants, it is fun and rewarding. The "art" of growing a miniature plant or tree into a unique shape is truely an art form. Some call it a labor of love. For the indoor gardener seeking something new and exciting to grow, you've come to the right plant. The word "Bonsai" means "tray planted". They plants are grown in shallow trays or containers.Choose the container carefully as it is all part of the artistic creation you are making. Trees, shrubs, plants and bushes are commonly used and grow from just a couple inches to a couple feet tall. Plants that naturally grow small and have small leaves are best. To most, it's not the actual growing of the plant that is so much fun. Rather, it's the trimming, pruning, and shaping of the plant into a unique shape that provides the reward to the Bonsai grower. Bonsai History: You may be surprised to learn that the roots of Bonsai plants does not come from Japan. It originated in ancient China, and was brought to Japan over a thousand years ago and became widely popular. In the last century, it has became popular in U.S. home, blending th joy of indoor gardening with the artistic rewards of shaping a miniature plant into a work of art.

Introduction
For centuries, people in the West have marveled at the delicate beauty produced by Oriental artists and sculptors. From gardening to tattooing to dance and martial arts, these craftsmen have enthralled us with complex forms and simplistic perfection. One of the most fascinating of the visual techniques to emerge from this highly cultured region is the Oriental art of miniature sculpture. Who has not been stricken with the expressive grace of Japanese Bonsai? Though once the sole province of Bonsai masters within Japan, Bonsai plants have been available to fortunate consumers throughout the world for some time. With this in mind, we are proud to now offer to you the animal complement of this art form; the Bonsai Kitten.

It is a hobby that brings about peace of mind. It can be called an example of the ultimate art, to bring up a plant in a pot as small as a matchbox. Bonsai makes it possible to bring Mother Nature close to us. Therefore I believe that Bonsai is the most wonderful hobby. I am pleased with my bonsai when its flowers blossom and its fruits appear. I am impressed by watching how its branches become more and more solid every year. This is a kind of pleasure that only a bonsai-lover may experience. Post a Follow-Up
unusual new growth of a sago bonsai plant
Posted by catintat 7 SC ( My Page ) on Tue, Jun 21, 05 at 17:29 I have a small sago and it has 5 healthy mature fronds. About a month ago, 4 new sprouts started growing up from the center. They have undergone a HUMONGOUS!!!! growth spurt the last couple of weeks growing an average 1-1.5 inches a DAY!!! I water it about once a week and only about ¼ cup with no fertilizer. This plant is in my windowless office with only fluorescent lighting. The longest new shoot is currently 29" long. Compared to the longest old frond at 9". It really looks alien, but quite interesting. The individual spines are very tight at the tip of the new growth for about 2", then they start spreading out until they are approximately 1" apart at the base. A coworker in another office has a sago as well with new growth that seems to be normal, short and tight. Any ideas as to the cause of the unusually long growth. I’d be glad to send a digital picture of it tomorrow. Don’t have my camera at work today. Regards

Bonsai
Bonsai is an art form in which a woody plant such as a tree (deciduous or coniferous), shrub or vine is grown in a small container to represent a miniature landscape. This miniature landscape is dominated by the interesting tree form. Bonsai involves good horticulture and very good design. Bonsai suggests more than just a tree in a pot. It should reflect nature rather than distorting it. Probably the simplest way to get started is to examine those in local garden centres or buy a book on the subject of Bonsai. Then look for a container-grown plant with potentially good form, twisted or dwarf like. Plants can also be grown from seed or from cuttings or by layering. Another source is a natural habitat where plants have struggled to exist and may be naturally dwarfed and distorted by the rigors imposed by the prevailing environment. The objective of Bonsai is to create in miniature the form of trees which have grown in particularly artistic shapes. The species should be one in which the flowers, fruits and foliage remain in scale as the tree is dwarfed. The trunk is the central element of the bonsai; it should taper gradually toward the top. The roots are also important since they add character if partially exposed or even trained over an interestingly-shaped or textured rock.
