Bonsai...
The millennia-old art form, still going strongly today! In Japanese, bonsai can be literally translated as 'tray planting' but since originating in Asia, so many centuries ago - it has developed into a whole new form. To begin with, the tree and the pot form a single harmonious unit where the shape, texture and colour of one, compliments the other. Then the tree must be shaped. It is not enough just to plant a tree in a pot and allow nature to take its course - the result would look nothing like a tree and would look very short-lived. Every branch and twig of a bonsai is shaped or eliminated until the chosen image is achieved. From then on, the image is maintained and improved by a constant regime of pruning and trimming. It is the art of dwarfing trees or plants and developing them into an aesthetically appealing shape by growing, pruning and training them in containers according to prescribed techniques. Overall, bonsai is a great interest, hobby or even profession to undertake. Although famous theologians have claimed that it is actually 90% art to a meager 10% of horticulture, it has to be said that a successful bonsai is most definitely a horticultural masterpiece.

  • 18 done - about 1682 to go... An unusual tree on this page for this update. There are about 41 indigenous species of cycads in southern Africa and about 18 of them are classified as trees. They are divided into two families - 40 of the species belongs to the Encephalartos family and one to the Stangeria family. I`ve promised some people that I`ll have the Marula tree or Sclerocarya birrea subsp. africana in this update but I have only recently got hold of some fruit and seed. This tree will be listed in the next update. If you haven`t smelled a ripe Marula fruit you haven`t smelled the bushveld! The trees added in this update is Gardenia volkensii subsp. spatulifolia or Bushveld gardenia and Buddleja saligna or False olive . Both of these are excelent garden subjects.

The Larz Anderson Bonsai Collection
The long history of growing plants in containers is documented in the writing and painting of various ancient civilizations, including the Egyptian, the Hindu, the Greek, and the Roman. But it appears that the ancient Chinese were the first to miniaturize trees for ornamental purposes, around A.D. 200. From China, the practice spread to Japan, probably during the Heian period (782-1185). During the peaceful and prosperous Tokugawa period of Japanese history (1603-1867), landscape gardening attained new importance. Many of the great Japanese gardens that exist today were established then, when the cultivation of native Japanese plants such as azaleas and maples was a pastime of the wealthy. Growing dwarf plants in containers was also popular, but by modern bonsai standards the container plants of the Tokugawa period were too large and their containers too deep. In this period, the term used for dwarf potted trees was hachi-no-ki , meaning "a tree in a pot." The term

(FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS)
Why doesn't Fuku-Bonsai sell traditional Japanese Black Pine bonsai or outdoor bonsai? Ethically, outdoor bonsai can only be sold to those who live in a similar climatic zone and to those who have the knowledge and discipline to grow these difficult plants. If sold to those without sufficient skills, the plants quickly die. We recommend that you consider purchasing outdoor bonsai only from a grower that lives close enought to visit and obtain specific information for caring for the outdoor bonsai. Consult with your local arboreteum or garden club for recommendations for the most successful outdoor bonsai in your area. Start with common plants that survive. Plants that are rarely seen as outdoor bonsai are rare because they keep dying. We want our plants to bring joy and for our customers to be successful. Our True Indoor Bonsai are suitable for those who can grow houseplants and for those who do not have the commitment, time, or facilities to grow more difficult outdoor bonsai. HELP! MY PLANT IS DYING!
