Australian Bonsai Part 2
Presenter: jane edmanson [3/9/1999]
In Part 1 of Australian Bonsai, (27/8/99) Ted Poynton created a base on which to grow bonsai trees using slate, forming a clay rim to contain the growing medium and attaching wires with which to train the plants.
Now we move on to the actual planting of bonsai. Take the plant out of its pot and remove about two thirds of the root mass. Wrap the remaining third of the root-ball in newspaper or hessian to preserve moisture until planting. Push copper wire into the root mass, and twist it around the main branches so they can be bent and shaped. The copper wire is kept in place until the branches have adopted the required shape, around six weeks, or longer in winter.
One plant or several plants can be used on one slate base. Remember that plants will be viewed from all angles, so position the first plant as if it were growing alone. If planting a group, each tree needs to be able to be viewed from all angles. To create a natural look place them different widths apart. Back-fill using a well-draining potting mix; adding gravel to improve the drainage if necessary. At this stage the wires which were attached to the slate base (seen last week) are criss-crossed over and amongst the plants to hold them in place.
Because the root-ball was trimmed back to a third, so too do the tree tops have to be cut back. A potential problem often mentioned is that native plants do not like their roots disturbed to much, but because these plants have been grown from cuttings, they have a nice fine root system and can tolerate the treatment.

Bonsai Srinivas, known for his rare and unique bonsais, will launch ‘Signature Bonsai’ in City shortly.
Interested in gardening since the age of seven, Bonsai Srinivas started trying his hands at designing Bonsai plants in 1960s. It was his sheer interest and love for plants that motivated him to take up bonsai and reach a level of perfection. With no one to guide him, he learnt about bonsai plants by years of research and reading.

It was not until his work attracted analysts from other countries and the Gabriel Management Group (TGMG), an American private equity company, bought his Bonsai garden, his daughter Shantala Srinivas came to the picture.
Legacy and art
Later, the fruit trees will also be added in the anthology of Signature Bonsai. It will be available at all florists in the City.

Deccan Herald Living A spiritual quest in miniature An ashram in Mysore perhaps houses the largest collection of bonsai trees in India and efforts are on to propagate their medicinal value, discovers Shankar Bennur.
Ganapathi Sachichidananda Swamiji of Avadhoota Datta Peetha in Mysore has a special interest in nature and ecology. Being a keen nature lover, the seer has developed spiritual gardens in his ashram premises in Mysore, thereby enlightening people about the divinity of Mother Nature.
Legend behind
It is said that Dadhimukha developed a fascinating technique by which he could ensure that the trees did not grow so tall as to draw the attention of the monkey-army, at the same time, retain all the characteristics of those trees.

Outdoor bonsai techniques
May Bacchus will create Muskoka in a corner or Alaska in an alleyway. She makes miniature landscapes that use Bonsai techniques, but borrow elements of Canadian landscapes. And most of the bonsai she creates lives in the garden year round, not in a sacred place inside. "If it's not growing in a pot, it's not Bonsai," says May in her St. Catharines backyard, surrounded by her pot-bound plants. You could say that no plant is safe from her extreme pruning techniques. In a slow stroll through her garden I saw Birch, Mountain Ash, Crabapples, Pines, Spruce and Cedars, all downscaled in size and all growing in astoundingly small containers. I had to keep asking in a stunned way, "This survives the winter in a pot this small?"

Mega touches to miniature marvels J.B.GNANAMANICKAM It is only skill and patience that determine the healthy developing of bonsai plants at home without much investment. IT WAS shocking to see potted plants, especially Bonsai, priced so high in many plant exhibitions. It neither calls for disappointment on not being able to afford buying the same, nor losing heart. You can easily grow your own Bonsai with little bit of time and patience. Remember, you don't need to spend too much money on this hobby. Hailing from Ooty with an inbuilt love for plants, I have been living in Chennai and growing plants in pots for want of space. My interests in developing bonsai plants was just incidental when I chanced upon a pipal tree sapling in my pot. With no heart to get rid of the same, I decided to try my hand at my first bonsai 10 years ago. Now I have a dozen in my collection that include pipal tree, banyan, guava, lime pomegranate, curry leaf, cacti and succulents. What is Bonsai?

"Plants symbolize life," Vice-President for Administration Martin V. Gregorio, an avowed plant enthusiast, remarked as he helped inaugurate two gardens—the Indigenous Bonsai Garden and the Science Complex Garden, within the upd campus on two balmy mornings last December. Plants for the Indigenous Bonsai Garden inaugurated on December 15 were donations of Modesto Manglicmot, former Philippine Bonsai Society president, and an authority in bonsai culture. Manglicmot said he decided to donate his 200 bonsai trees to the university because of his belief in the UPD's capacity to care for the plants. He adds the plants also needed a permanent site in the city. "Part of my life will be here at the UP campus because it's a dream of mine that as long as I'm around, I'll devote my time in preserving and culturing these plants," Manglicmot said.

"It just blew me away,' recalls the New Jersey native, now 46 and owner of Kimura Bonsai and Landscape Nursery in Northridge, where he practices the ancient Japanese art of raising potted trees. The specimen that captivated Pressler and ignited a life-long passion was a 250-year-old fire needle pine from Japan. "Half of it was completely dead wood and the other half had nice foliage pads. I couldn't believe anything that dead-looking was still alive,' he says with a laugh. Now the bonsai artist owns about 2,000 trees, which include those in his nursery stock. He also lectures on the subject and offers monthly instructional workshops at his nursery.

    • Azalea leaves may be showing signs of damage from lace bugs. Stippled leaves with brownish specks on the underside are indicators that lace bugs are feeding. These insects have two or more generations per year. Lace bugs also feed on sycamore leaves and cause them to turn a yellowish-red and drop prematurely. Spray with Orthene, Isotox, or any other approved pesticide. Azalea leaves may be sensitive to soaps and oils so if you use that type of control do a small test area first. Litchi fruits Avocados Do not press the fruit with your thumb. This can cause discoloration and bruised spots and is one reason for fruit loss in markets. Early July is the last chance to prune your Azaleas Keep your crape myrtles blooming by removing the spent flower heads. Crape myrtles often flower through September. An application of fertilizer that is high in phosphorous and potassium such as 2-10-10 will also help with blooms.
