MABUHAY - Welcome to Bonsai in the Philippines Most of the trees used for Bonsai in the Philippines are local trees like Ficus, Kalyos (Streblus Asper),Orange Jasmin, (Muraya Paniculata), Philippine tea, Bantigue (Pemphis Acidula), Lantana, Tamarind, Camagong (Philippine Ebony), Camachile (Pithicolodium Dulce), Bignay, Yangya, Pyracantha, Bouganvilla, Lemoncito. Many of these are collected trees and trained as Bonsai Although Bonsai (as we know it today) is a fairly new hobby in the Philippines there is some evidence to show that Chinese immigrants were growing Balete trees (a local term referring to ficus) onto corals in the 15th century. They would insert the roots into the coral's crevices and place them onto water basins until the roots clasped the host corals. The arrangement were small enough to be carried by one hand. The tree would in a certain time of the year be leafless as if dead, but only to shoot out new buds that symbolized the Resurrection of Easter Sunday. Since trade between the Philippines and China had been ongoing centuries before the Spaniards came, it would not be far-fetched to think that this art was already flourishing even before then. (Relacion de las Islas Pilipinas by Fr. Pedro Chirino, S.J. 1604)

Most bonsai plants are outdoor plants, and need to be kept outdoors. With very few exceptions, if you grow a bonsai plant inside it will die.

Bonsai
To many people the word bonsai brings to mind a stunted tree or plant which is left to grow in a tiny container. The expression bonsai actually consists of two Japanese words: bon meaning a shallow container or tray, and sai, a plant or planting. But bonsai is not the art of stunting a tree’s growth, rather it is the art of growing plants in a confined space to create a piece of nature in miniature. While it is a Japanese word and the whole practice is firmly rooted in the Orient, you will find bonsai plants all over the world. While bonsai is usually linked with Japan, it originated in China. It began as early as the eighth century. In oriental cultures, art brings order to the everyday world, therefore bonsai fits in very comfortably as an art form, bringing nature into balance and scale. Bonsai plants can actually be any tree or shrub grown outdoors. Some plants seem to be more suited to it than others. The most common plant you will see as a bonsai are junipers, since they are easily pruned and trained. But if you have ever visited any large bonsai collections such as the one at the National Arboretum in Washington, DC, you will see everything from blooming cherry trees, to azaleas, quinces and redbuds, to elms, maples and birch trees. Upon seeing one of these outstanding collections, or even one beautiful specimen, many gardeners are eager to own one. But a basic understanding of the plants, the culture and care should be taken into consideration before purchase.

Plants are here... The plants I ordered off of Ebay have finally arrived. They were in excellent shape, and I would not hesitate to purchase plants via Ebay again (of course, it depends on the seller). The purple plant is a succulent that goes by the name of Aeonium Arboreum Purpuratrum. The green plants are Murraya paniculata (Orange Jasmine, named for the scent of its blossoms). I hope to cultivate the Orange Jasmine into bonsai tress. Azaleas and Cyclamen are next on the buy list. May 16, 09:27AM PDT

Profile: Dave Lowman Where does one begin to write a profile about Dave? At the beginning or the end? The end is the beginning. "I deeply believe connection with nature is important to everyone." Dave lives just such a life. Surrounded by timber and farmland, you will find Dave still living in the home where he was raised. It was possibly while exploring the wooded area around his home as a boy that he discovered, " If one observes plants and especially wild animals you notice they assert their being and live completely without self doubt. They quite simply, yet profoundly, live in a state of natural grace. When one is able to connect with nature, some of this unconditional self acceptance rubs off on us and we are healed and blessed." This is Dave's mission. To live and share a life surrounded by nature. So, he started in the training of bonsai? No, not yet. Long before the desire to train bonsai manifested he would ponder the pruning of trees to create certain effects such as espalier and scaffold structure for fruit trees and branch selection for grape training. Now? No now, he is off to Iowa State University to major in Agricultural Business, minor in Horticulture, and explore the art of pottery. It is around this time that Dave realizes he has always had a picture of bonsai in the back of his mind. "For me, bonsai is a perfect combination to combine my love for art and plants. "It is at that moment Dave became, as Luther Burbank would say "A Partner of Nature".

Bonsai plants: Tropical Gardens of Maui Hawaii
Tropical Gardens of Maui is a 4-acre botanical garden and export plant nursery located in Iao Valley on the Island of Maui.
Tropical Gardens of Maui is located on the windward side of the island at the entrance of historic Iao Valley. Planting began in 1987 on a treeless lot that was previously a cut flower farm. Sheltered between the valley walls and being at an elevation of approximately 800 feet has provided ideal conditions for the 4 acres of plants; as a result, the garden has grown rapidly. Our location has also provided us with our own unique micro climate that allows us to easily raise a widely diverse selection of plants ranging from Southwestern American Cactus to bizarre Miniature Palms from the rain forest of Borneo.
The main reason for starting the garden was to create a showcase of tropical plants from all parts of the world, with hundreds of varieties of exotic palms, ginger's, orchids, and many other plants including native Hawaiian plants, many of which are rare or endangered. Flowering trees provide the canopy for the understory vegetation and also provide homes for the many orchids and other air plants that can be seen growing as they would in their native habitat. The collection of plants is always growing with new ones being introduced continuously. Sections of the garden are continually being replanted and improved.

59. Selecting Flowering Plants For Christmas Gifts
You may want to give a bonsai plant as a Christmas gift. I have seen a good number of bonsai plants in stores, some already trained, and for a smaller price
http://gardenline.usask.ca/plants/x-mas.html
Selecting Flowering Plants for Christmas Gifts GardenLine House Plants Tom Ward Ward is a staff member of the Department of Horticulture Science, University of Saskatchewan. This column is provided as an extension service by the Division of Extension and Community Relations and the Department of Horticulture Science, University of Saskatchewan. The most common Christmas gift plant by far is the poinsettia. This large, colourful, long-lasting plant seems to increase in popularity every year. The usual colours for this plant are red, pink and white; however, a new creamy yellow variety called lemon drop may find its way into Saskatoon stores this Christmas Other Christmas gift plants include the Jerusalem cherry, a compact plant with red fruit. The fruit is slightly smaller than a quarter and stays attractive on the plant for about a month. Similar to the cherry is the Christmas pepper. It also has attractive red and sometimes white or purple fruit. Of course, when you think Christmas you also think of the Christmas cactus, an easy-to-grow house plant and also a fairly nice gift plant. The cactus is in the stores now and ready to bloom. Choose one that has some small buds that will develop later, or most of the bloom will be finished by Christmas. Two other lesser known gift plants come to mind that you might consider, Norfolk Island pine is a pine-like plant native to New Zealand and the Norfolk Islands. It can be grown as a year-round house plant. After many years it will become as large as six feet high or more. Under outdoor (non-freezing) conditions, it is a tree. As a gift plant the Norfolk Island pine can be the Christmas tree that is decorated each year. It is very attractive and not nearly as great a fire hazard as the true pines, fir and spruce usually purchased as Christmas trees.

10 seeds $2.25 B1706 MONKEY POD RAIN TREE ( SAMANEA SAMAN )
Few people realize that this magnificent Rain Forest tree can be raised inside in containers. Its name comes from the fact that when it rains, the fern like foliage closes up to let the rain pass through. Bears beautiful glowing pink flowers followed by attractive green and black pods that contain a sweet pulp that is eaten by monkeys in its jungle habitat. Very easy to raise from seeds. Amazingly, this also makes a wonderful Bonsai plant
